Well, looks like it's gonna happen.
Atari is aiming to move more so towards online distribution -- since they sold the rest of their PAL-fulfillment over to Namco-Bandai for distribution rights. (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33703/Atari-sells-off-distribution-arm)

Slash publishing costs and remove shipping costs from the equation but charge the same price per product? Seems like a logical choice for any profiteer.

That makes sense. Atari PAL was their Asian division which they've sold to Namco Bandai. After that loss they have to cut costs on every front.
