Only an Arab could spot the error in that shot. The translation for the "Hotel" sign is written incorrectly. I'll give them credit for getting the right letters, they're just backwards and they're not connected, it basically says "L E T O H" in Arabic.
Someday, I'll get a job fixing these things.
-
This is one of those games that I knew I would be getting before I'd even seen or heard anything about it. The name was enough to sell me.
That being said though, what little you do get to see in the trailer looks really good.
-

Man, send them an email or something. Maybe they will listen to you and things will progress from there.
-
Obviously they have to have someone who reads/writes Arabic, cuz I sure as hell couldn't even get to where they have it. I'm guessing it just got flipped at some point and no one noticed lol. Where is the guy who wrote it?
-
hahaha oh many Xessive this has pissed you off so much over the years.
I remember when we were playing some obscure mods and you were like... THESE ARE JUST LETTERS AND RANDOM WORDS! THEY DON'T EVEN MAKE SENSE! WHAT THE HELL DOES DOG CUM ROAD MEAN?
-
Man, they're killing me inside!
I find it hard to believe they couldn't get an Arabic speaker to proof read the stuff! Geez, I'll do it just to get my name in the credits! Hmm.. idea..

I'm looking forward to BF3, especially since it looks like it way more tactical than any of the rpevious BF games. I'm just a little skeptical about getting it on 0-day, whatwith DICE's infamous history of beta-state or broken releases.

You know it's funny cause I feel the same way about some of the English translations I've seen in Dubai, especially the signs above the shops. Though every once in a while you'll get the most exacting translation, like the parking lot sign that read, "Attention, the parking is for bona fide shopping customers only. Thank you." HAHAHA, dude I've seen so many words misspelled and then they throw out a phrase like BONA FIDE! Come on!
-
Haha I know! It's ridiculous sometimes.
We have a sweets/pastry shop in Abu Dhabi called "Butt Sweet House" most likely due to ignorance.
A lot of the signs are like "Engrish" but even more retarded.
I can forgive cheap, home-printed stuff but when it's a sign for a shop or any major visible signage there's no excuse for negligence.
P.S.
When I was younger I always thought "bona fide" was written "bonified" becuase of the way it was pronounced in English! hehe Like something that is bone-related.

Joystiq -> Console versions will be lacking the graphical quality of the PC version. (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/battlefield-3-will-have-lower-framerate-and-resolution-lose-cer/)
Here's the thing: everything we've seen of Battlefield 3 has been running on PC, and maybe five percent of PC players are going to get that kind of graphical fidelity. For a lot of folks, the console version is going to be their only choice -- so what should they expect?
According to DICE executive producer Patrick Bach, the console version obviously won't have all the graphical bells and whistles of its PC counterpart. Speaking to Videogamer, Bach said the console port will lack the "higher resolution, the higher framerate, the anti-aliasing, the motion blur, stuff like that" that we've seen in the trailers released so far.
Still, it's not all doom and gloom. Despite some performance differences between Bad Company 2 on the PC and consoles, for example, both run quite smoothly and looked great.
-
Higher resolution, framerate, and anti-aliasing are all common improvements that the PC version have had for multiplatform titles for a long time now. This isn't news.
-
Sadly, it is now.
-
I really wish more modern-day PC games would actually ship w/ SDK's or even have SDK's released for download - like what was much more commonplace in the golden Windows PC gaming days (most of the 90's to early 2000's).
I just have a feeling since BF3 PC requires DX10 to 11, it's gonna blow-out the console version graphically for those w/ high-end rigs.
-
DICE to Focus on the PC with Battlefield 3 (http://www.geforce.com/#/News/articles/battlefield3-interview)
Do you feel the consoles are holding PC games back?
Patrick Bach: Yes, absolutely. That's the biggest problem we have today. Most games are actually still based on the same core idea that the consoles are your focus, the superior platform or something. I don’t know why. That was the truth 5 years ago, but the world has moved on. PCs are way more powerful than the consoles today and there are actually almost zero games out there that actually use the benefits of this. So for our target of what we want to hit, we are now using the more powerful platform to try and prove what we see gaming being in the future rather than using the lowest common denominator, instead of developing it for the consoles and then just adding higher resolution textures and anti-aliasing for the PC version. We're do it the other way around, we start with the highest-end technology that we can come up with and then scale it back to the consoles.
Bach asserts that by using the PC as Battlefield 3's lead development platform, it will make the console versions look better as well.
-
That's interesting. But the truth is that even 5 years ago, the PC was the superior platform for the FPS experience. Consoles became the target platforms for reasons other than best performance, control or visuals. These factors haven't changed. If his approach yields better results across the board, great. It will make everyone happier, particularly the PC gamers who have been getting so many console ports lately.

I'm confused. Isn't Battlefield an MP series?
I'm not super heavy into military shooters that don't aim for a lot more simulation, but it's nice to see someone talk about the PC with some fondness and respect. More power to them for that.
-
I'm confused. Isn't Battlefield an MP series?
Traditionally, yes. However, DICE has been branching into the singleplayer field with the Bad Company series (and of course Mirror's Edge) adding some great offline value to the working multiplayer formula.
-
I think the only Battlefield game I've played was about 10 minutes of 1942.

Bad Company 2 is awesome - SP and MP.

Bad Company 2 is awesome - SP and MP.
Yeah, that game is addictive.
Although I will admit that I hated the multiplayer in the first week or two. The game makes you feel like you suuuuck so bad! Death comes easily and the equipment rewards really stack things against newbies. I think GPW and Pyro had a similar experience.
-
Agreed, X.

That 12 minute video looks really good. I might play this when it comes out.

During one of the FOX TV Shows on TV today, I saw a commercial for BF3. Damn, EA's ramping up their campaign w/ BF3 early...

So it is like an Apple play in the vein of Flash and the e-book thing. Thinking they are big enough to thumb their nose at the going standard. If Origin becomes even moderately viable, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled their whole catalog from Steamand all other D2D services.

So it is like an Apple play in the vein of Flash and the e-book thing. Thinking they are big enough to thumb their nose at the going standard. If Origin becomes even moderately viable, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled their whole catalog from Steamand all other D2D services.
Why would they pull their entire catalog from D2D, Gamersgate, and other DD's selling their stuff if Origin "moderately viable"?
I could understand if say Origin was #2 to Steam, but really not otherwise.
Those Non-Steam services LET YOU plug your game keys into Origin, then let Origin can handle everything - download; updates; patching; etc.
This is the fight that Valve and EA are having - EA wants to handle everything for their games; Valve wants all games sold on their service to be handled through Steam.
-

I could understand if say Origin was #2 to Steam, but really not otherwise.
Because EA is huge and by consolidating all their games within Origin, it would force people to use it. And of course the more people that use it, the more other publishers would put their games on it, and then EA gets a piece of their pie as well.
-
Since EA are having to pick up the slack from Steam's restrictions already, why not push it to the next level? Nothing would please me more than to see Valve knocked down a few pegs. The other services may get caught in the crossfire, unfortunately.
-
We have yet to see if EA is even interested in turning Origin into a generic store. They might just keep it as their own private distributor, kinda like Blizzard and Battlenet.
Besides, I'm sure its bad enough all these publishers are giving a cut of sales to Valve. Convincing them to give a cut to EA? I wouldn't want to be the one giving that sales pitch.
-
The other services may get caught in the crossfire, unfortunately.
That is NOT what I want to see.
I don't want to lose D2D, Gamersgate, GreenMan, Amazon DL, or any of the others.
The more competitors on the Digital download market, the more they want to compete w/ each other for price-cut wars.

ALL copies of BF3 for the PC will REQUIRE that Origin service. (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&boardid=1&threadid=124436)
Battlefield 3 Will Require Origin
[Aug 11, 2011, 3:44 pm ET] - Share - Viewing Comments
It seems yes is the answer to the question of whether Battlefield 3 will require the use of EA's new Origin service, even for users who purchase a physical copy of DICE's upcoming military shooter sequel. A question on Twitter directed at Global Battlefield Community Manager Daniel Matros asked "If we get the DVD version of BF3 do we still have to use Origin?" This was followed by another attempt, asking: "What about the rumors spreading on the forums that we need origin to play BF3 if we have the DVD?" These inspired the following reply: "Yes those 'rumors' are true :)." Thanks Teddy via BF3Blog.
-
Ouch.. In that acse I hope they sync up all battlefield info with the origin service, like the friends list etc. I hate having like 8 different friend lists!
-
Guess we know why Valve was against it.
-
Wasn't Mass Effect 2 and BF2 Also run through some EA service (Origin before it was called that)? I seem to remember having to sign up to an EA account in order to play both (even through STEAM).
-
Origin was the EA Download Manager (EADM) but it was entirely optional.
For Mass Effect 2 you needed a Bioware account (for any Bioware game really) which eventually merged with EA, making it an EA account (which now also you Bioware Social account). It's the same account I use to log into any EA game now: Battlefield Bad Company 2, Dead Space 2, Burnout Paradise etc.
Point is, nothing exclusively needed EADM. I'm not sure about The Sims 3 though, that may have needed something set up for its DLC.

Expansions are kinda odd-working normally on Origin.
I own Sims 3: Late Night expansion from D2D.
YOU CANNOT register Sims 3 expansions into Origin.
If you try to register Sims 3 expansions into Origin, Origin will tell you to register your Sims 3 expansions onto the Sims 3 website.
Sims 3 original game can be registered onto Origin, though.
I bought Sims 3 original game from Retail - yeah, it showed right-up on Origin right after installing the game.

Yeah. This is my thought too.

Don't care about BF3' but I'm sure ME3 will require Origin. Shit!
And probably Dragon Age 3, too.
If Origin has a "offline mode" for doing SP stuff like Steam does [as long as it works], then I won't be too worried...
-
Doesn't matter. Dragon Age is already dead.
-
Doesn't matter. Dragon Age is already dead.
The Age of Dragons has gone! Let us begin a new age of prosperity: the Newt Age!
Like Steam, Origin has an offline mode. Unlike Steam, Origin's offline mode logs in successfully every time.

Gabe Newell weighs in...sorta. (http://www.develop-online.net/news/38470/Newell-We-have-to-convince-EA-to-come-back)
Newell suggested the struggle with EA is complicated, but nevertheless reconcilable.
"I don’t think Valve can pick just one thing and think the issue would go away if we fixed that," he said.
"We have to show EA it’s a smart decision to have EA games on Steam, and we’re going to try to show them that," he said.
---
"Companies have to earn the right to install content on their customers' PCs on a regular basis," he began.
"The same thing is true of Steam. We have to prove we are creating value on an ongoing basis, whether it’s to EA or Ubisoft or whoever.
"We really want to show there’s a lot of value having EA titles on Steam. We want EA’s games on Steam and we have to show them that’s a smart thing to do," he said.
"I think at the end of the day we’re going to prove to Electronic Arts they have happier customers, a higher quality service, and will make more money if they have their titles on Steam. It’s our duty to demonstrate that to them. We don’t have a natural right to publish their games."
Reading between the lines, it doesn't sound like Steam is going to change, just that it would be better for EA to give in to have their game on Steam. But maybe I'm just cynical.

Pre-order Battlefield 3 on Origin, get a free game (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/pre-order-battlefield-3-on-origin-get-a-free-game.ars)
A friend who had already pre-ordered the game was pleasantly surprised to receive the following e-mail, which he forwarded:
As a special thank you for pre-ordering Battlefield 3 early at Origin, we're offering you a bonus PC digital download game. Please apply the code below at the shopping cart to redeem one PC Digital version of one of our recommended shooter titles: Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2 or Medal of Honor. The price will be reduced to $0 after applying the code at your shopping cart. Hurry—this offer is only good for the month of August, and is exclusive to Origin customers only. See below for more details.
Interesting offer from EA but clearly aimed at prioritizing Origin as a primary store. Anyway, it doesn't benefit me any since 1) I already have ME2 and DS2, so that limits my choice to MoH, and 2)Battlefield 3 costs 50 Euros ($72 USD). I would actually save $2 by pre-ordering BF3 for $50 from anywhere else and buying Medal of Honor at full price for $20 (current market price). So EA fails yet again at pushing Origin on me. I will not be convinced of Origin until they resolve these asinine regional issues.
-
Yeah the region stuff sucks. But that kind of thing sucks at all these DD sites. Because pushing bits over an ocean is more expensive.

We're going to look back and tell our grandchildren how cool the internet used to be, arent we?
-
This is why I pay a relatively high internet bill, so I don''t have to worry or pay for all the background noise.
That market certainly has been a brutal one for providers, with costs for transit falling by an average of 30 percent a year. Sadly, when it comes to home Internet pricing, transit price drops don't often translate into lower monthly bills.
I'm already getting screwed but silently taking it with the hope that things won't get worse.
-
We're going to look back and tell our grandchildren that the Internet existed—along with cellular networks and things like cars and running water—from the smoking craters we live in after the robots take over.
-
No, we are going to tell our grandchildren how back in the day we had arms and legs made out of flesh, INSTEAD OF AWESOME CYBORG ARMS THAT CAN TRANSFORM INTO CANNONS.
-
I don't know what you guys will be up to but I'll be narrating my grandchild's story after the calamity!
-
I'll be a skeleton in the wasteland looking up at the yellow sky.
Hope the kid is good to you, X.

Gabe Newell wants EA back on Steam. (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/18/newell-valve-wants-to-convince-ea-to-get-back-on-steam/)
Disappointed that EA's Battlefield 3 won't be sold on Steam? So, it turns out, is Valve's Gabe Newell. He takes a surprisingly responsible stance on the "complicated" issue of EA's absence from his digital distribution service, telling Develop that "we have to show EA it's a smart decision to have EA games on Steam, and we're going to try to show them that."
Newell says there isn't just one thing Valve can to do convince EA that Steam is a good place to sell its games -- instead, it has to "prove we are creating value on an ongoing basis, whether it's to EA or Ubisoft or whoever." Steam has a whole host of good reasons for EA to use it, says Newell, including "happier customers, a higher quality service, and [EA] will make more money if they have their titles on Steam. It's our duty to demonstrate that to them. We don't have a natural right to publish their games."
Newell didn't go into further detail about just how Steam would convince EA to come back, but we hear homemade cupcakes are always a nice option.
Plus, I'm sure Gabe wants a nice cut of any possible BF3 Steam sales, as well...which I'm sure would be hella-huge. ;)

Electronic Arts' new COO Peter Moore (http://gamescom.gamespot.com/story/6329903/battlefield-3-is-about-taking-market-share-moore/)
GS: Is there any update on the negotiations with Valve to get games like Battlefield 3 on Steam?
PM: It's pretty simple, and I think we've said it pretty consistently over the last few weeks. If we're allowed to deal with our consumers directly, being able to transact directly with our consumers, fix issues directly with consumers, then we'll be happy to sit down with our good friends at Valve and resolve some of those differences. But if their terms and conditions and policies don't change, then we'll focus on the other hundred download retailers we see in the marketplace and our own platform of course, Origin. It's important for us to have a direct conversation with our consumers, particularly on the PC platform, which is an open platform and should be kept that way.

I dont know who to cheer for since I don't know who is trying to push on who with what. What are these policies that Steam is enforcing that would make EA care so much? Why isn't anybody else pulling their games because of it? It's just this big stare down and nobody has a fucking clue as to why.
-
I'd say it's 99% because EA wants to push this shiny new system they've invested in.
-
What are these policies that Steam is enforcing that would make EA care so much?
Valve instituted a self-serving draconian policy. If Steam carries your game, you are not allowed to service it directly in any way. No DLC, no expansions, no patches, no nothing. You must do everything through Steam. EA said nuts to that.
Why isn't anybody else pulling their games because of it?
Because only big players like EA can go toe-to-toe with Valve, making EA the unlikely champion for preventing a huge power-grabbing outfit from dominating and controlling everything. (Takes one to beat one.)
-
Wow.. EA standing up for PC rights is unexpected, though I have no doubt they have their agenda. EA is an antihero.
Either way, any company, no matter how noble its origins, cannot have too much power and control over the market. I like Valve in general but even I would oppose handing them the keys to my consumer-base. I feel like a hypocrite saying that since I have a large library on Steam now, to which my access is effectively controlled by Valve.
-
I'd say it's 99% because EA wants to push this shiny new system they've invested in.
Exactly. Why do we have to take sides in this bull crap. In the end either company would abandon their fanbase in a heartbeat if it meant a higher profit margin elsewhere.
-
Both Valve and EA are trying to push their own agendas here.
Valve wants complete games and up-to-date games sold on their Steam services. Makes sense to me, to make sure their customers can get every piece of a game that is wanted - VERY FAIR.
Valve probably ALSO wants all the DLC also sold also through Steam b/c they'll get a cut of any Steam-sold DLC.
EA wants all the patching done through Origin. FAIR. It's their product, they should update it as they see fit, when they see fit.
EA wants to sell DLC exclusively through Origin - PROBLEM is for consumer, who can only go through Origin or game's in-game store. Bleh. That doesn't allow for competitive DLC prices.
BIG Problem -> Most games have two versions: Steam and Non-Steam b/c Steam-sold versions require their program running in the background.
Damn DRM is always a problem of some kind.
EA probably doesn't want to dedicate more resources [testers, money, etc] to bug-testing TWO different PC versions of the same exact game.
You don't see D2D or Gamersgate forcing EA to use their own service to run in background to run a game, do you?
There have been many instances where Steam version of a game has their own specific issues b/c it has that additional Steam program running in the background.
My Solution -> Steam-sold 3rd party games that just should NOT require Steam program running in the background.
Make Steam program forced for activation ONLY.
Any other time - running Steam should be optional.

This is something I've been thinking. It isn't as simple as "Here are the files Valve, please sell them for us!" At this point EA would have to rip out the Origin tie ins and code in support for the Steam infrastructure. And out of all the DD stores only Valve is requiring this. What does EA get for this trouble? Less money from the DLC sold through Steam. Talk about lose-lose. Valve is asking for a lot and not really giving EA anything special in return, at least nothing they aren't already prepared to handle themselves. A few diehard fanboys won't buy BF3 over this, the majority won't care. From a long-haul business perspective that "loss" will be worth getting out from under Valves thumb.
And like Cobra said, its EA because they are big enough to put up the fight and have big enough games that people won't want to miss over something as silly as "my most favoritest store doesn't sell it."
-
Hmm, I wonder why these issues never arose Microsoft's Games For Windows Live implementations even though there's a GFWL store that also provides DLC for GFWL titles.
-
Thats currently the big question. Its believed that Valves updated terms do not affect games already on the service, so games already up there doing that are fine. But if they were to release a new piece of DLC then they would be subject to the new rules.
The tricky thing is Dirt 3 apparently sells DLC this way and its had recent releases, but is still on Steam. This is where a lot of confusion is coming from because it doesn't seem consistent.

Is Codemasters planning to bring that Dirt 3 DLC over to Steam?
-
Apparently not. Its all sold through GFWL, even in the Steam copy.

Is Microsoft's G4WL an exception to the rule or something? [shrug]

BF3 PC will NOT have an in-game browser.
BF3 PC uses BatteLog home page through a Web Browser instead. (http://www.destructoid.com/battlefield-3-has-no-in-game-browser-server-on-pc-209346.phtml)
It has been revealed that Battlefield 3 is getting an in-game server browser, something that is usually obligatory with PC games. Except ... the feature is exclusive to consoles. The PC version has to use the Battlelog home page, with no in-game browsing allowed.
Senior gameplay designer Alan Kertz has gone so far as to say that there won't be an in-game menu at all on PC, with everything done through a Web browser. He says that it acts as the in-game menu and that you can jump straight from the service into a game with no inconvenience.
The problem people have with this arrangement is that you won't be able to look for new servers while playing an existing game. You'll have to quit out, go to your browser, pick a new server on the Battlelog page, and re-enter. As you might expect, this is getting a fair bit of criticism from fans.
While it's not the end of the world, it does seem like an overly complicated, roundabout way of doing things. A simple in-game browser would be so much more convenient. Still, EA hasn't really been about consumer convenience lately, not when there are proprietary services to force down our throats.
-
Is it just me or are all the developers just flailing about with all these funky ideas about how a person can actually get to play a game. What happened to KISS?
-
That's kinda retarded. I have to go to a website a select a from server list there? Then relaunch the game? I don't know about how EA assumes online gaming works but I have to attempt to connect to several servers before a game actually works; so many "Lost connection to server" and "You have been kicked because your ping was over 150ms" etc. That's aside from losing connection while I'm in a game i.e. stupid shit like "you have been kicked because submachineguns are not allowed on this server" or the old case of Punkbuster false-positives
Hang on a minute, Origin will be mandatory for the game to work, and Origin has an in-game web browser, why can't they implement it in-game via Origin?!
-
EA and DICE are so primed to take COD's FPS throne critically and sales-wise w/ BF3....
And it seems they keep finding a way to pretty much keep fucking-up that possibility [PC game requires Origin, won't be on Steam, has no in-game server, no PC mod tools]!
Seriously - WTF? :o

Destructoid -> Talk w/ DICE about BattleLog. (http://www.destructoid.com/talking-battlefield-3-s-battlelog-with-dice-209445.phtml)
Ever since Criterion Games introduced Autolog in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, every EA studio seems to put their own spin on the lauded feature and it's one of the best things EA has been doing with their games recently. We had the chance to talk to Karl Magnus Troedsson, Vice President at DICE, about the long awaited Battlefield 3.
DICE's version of Autolog is called Battlelog. We talked about how they reshaped it to fit a tactical first-person shooter and how it brings you and your friends together to shoot each other in the face. We also touched on the console version in general and talked about how they're balancing their maps to make sure that they're fun on both PC and console.
AutoLog was cool for NFS: Hot Pursuit - but it worked b/c it was BUILT INTO THE ACTUAL GAME ITSELF!!!
Sure, it's probably pretty cool to check get on a mobile or some portable device, get on a Web browser, log into BattleLog, and see what your friends have done have done while you're away from access to the game - but this seems like a feature that should ALSO be built into the game itself!
-
DICE needs a new publisher. That team could do so much more under a banner that doesn't enforce this kind of crap on them.
-

It's like DICE is becoming like Infinity Ward when Modern Warfare 2 came around.
Publisher is restricting ALL kinds of stuff on the developer.
So, since Respawn is now with EA, when's DICE going to Activision? :P
-
Its weird that its not in-game, but word from alpha testers is Battlelog is pretty slick. From reading about it it sounds like a web-based version of All Seeing Eye (anyone else remember that?), but specifically for one game. Or maybe a better comparison is Quake Live. So you find a server in your browser, click go, the game loads in the background and when its ready it pops up and you're there in the server all ready to go.
I guess the positive side is they can change and update the server browser without having to patch the game. Negative side is everyones reaction is "WTF?"
We'll have to see how it all shakes out.

All this Alt-Tabbing might be annoying.

I feel like this is second time the PC reqs are being revealed.
-
Shit, I'm kind of towing the line for the CPU. I think I overclocked for the first game, but it was the first game I came across where people were saying quad core was blowing dual out of the water.

I've finally got my chance to play the Beta!
It's buggy and the servers crash a lot but what I did was a lot of fun. I'm really excited about the full game now.
On to the not-so-good (or downright terrible) part: Battlelog.
The good:
-Great stat tracking interface
-Best profile management system that EA has ever implemented (doesn't mean it's great just the best EA has to offer)
The bad:
-Must load in your default web browser
-Forces you to keep your web browser (as well as Origin) open while you play
-It is THE server browser
-Cluttered user interface
Over the Battlelog experience as it stands is counter-productive, there's no logical reason why it can't be built into game's interface.
launching the game is a chore:
- 1. Launch Origin.
- 2. Log into Origin.
- 3. Click on Battlefield 3 Beta.
- 4. Origin starts loading your web browser.
- 5. Log into Battlefield 3 Battlelog (redundant since it's the same log in details you just used to log into Origin).
- 6. Finally you're in Battlelog, either quickmatch or select server browser.
- 7. Quickmatch doesn't work so hope to God you can find a server with free slots.
- 8. Assuming you found a server that works the game now begins to connect.
- 9. The game has successfully connected to a server, wait for it to load.
- 10. The game has loaded, click "Go to game."
- 11. Game's not in fullscreen?! Hit Alt+Enter!
It's a real WTF approach to interface design. If the final game is anything like that EA and DICE are gonna get a shit storm from the fans.
Let's not forget since the game has no actual main menu you can't change any settings until you have successfully connected and loaded into a server and spawned, only then can you hit ESC and start changing your settings. I expect this part to change and inevitably get an out-of-game config tool just like Battlefield Play4Free.
Anyway, to summarize: game's awesome, all the technical bullshit around it stinks to high Hell. Damn shame.
-

Xbox version:
- 1. start up the beta
- 2. choose "multiplayer"
- 3. choose "quick match"
- 4. wait 15 second and play
I guess quick match on PC is not working at all? I spent 15 minutes waiting and it didn't load. If I use the server browser to pick a server, it takes me 10 minutes to find one that's not full by the time I click join.
I'm also not liking how it runs on my PC. If I run at 1080p my framerate dips into the 20s at times even on the lowest settings. At 720p I can manage medium settings, but the aliasing and lack of long range visibility kills it (it's not just about prety graphics, it's about seeing a sniper across the map). 1440x900 on medium seems ok, but I'm still not happy with it. If I had the money to upgrade my HD4850 I would probably see a pretty big increase, but I have $8 to my name right now so that's not gonna happen.
So combine the way it run on my PC and all the Origin/Battlelog bullshit, and I'm feeling the Xbox version. But, I have no money and a friend wants to buy it for me on PC so we can play it together. I guess a free game that runs ok and has hoops to jump through is better than one I can't afford but runs good. If I was buying it myself I'd say the PC version is only worth it if you have a computer that can really make it look good. (or if you're insistent on m/kb, which I'm not sure I'm that worried about anymore)
EDIT: Oh, and the PC party/squad setup is really confusing, or maybe just broken. My friend went to the Battlelog site and created a party. he said he sent me an invite, but I never got it. I had to manually join his party. Then when he went to join a game, it didn't bring me along. We had to have one of us join a server, then the other join on him, hoping that it didn't fill up before the second person joined. Then we get put into different squads. There's no squad interface for choosing either. You have 2 options: "find me a squad" and "leave squad".
Of course, joining a match on Xbox with an XBL party doesn't put you in the same squad either. At least BC2 on PC had a squad list that let you pick which squad you want. (which really should be in all versions of all BF games)
-
I've been playing the beta for a very short period of time (probably like 5 games), but I am enjoying the Battlelog. It's nice to just be able to click on a server and launch into a game. The traditional game has like 45 seconds of loading and menus to just get to multiplayer. It's nice to side step that.
I think they are going to fix the battlelog to make navigating the actual servers easier. At least I hope this is the case. But that is a pretty easy fix.
Beta itself is also fun. I'm bad at this game, just like I was BC2, but I die a little less randomly than I did before. It also runs pretty well on my computer. I wasn't really following the hype for the game, but I think I may preorder it soon.
-
As usual, sounds like I should wait for some patches, price-drops, and a few months before I plunge into a DICE game...

Bluesnews -> PC Gamers - You might want to stay off any hacked servers over 64 players, as EA might ban you from Origin and you might lose access to your Origin games. (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&boardid=1&threadid=126184)
Hacked 128-Player Battlefield 3 Beta Servers
[Oct 02, 2011, 2:22 pm ET] - Share - Viewing Comments
BF3Blog (http://bf3blog.com/2011/10/battlefield-3-beta-hacked-to-support-128-players/) has word that some servers have popped up for the Battlefield 3 beta allowing 128-player games. The servers are apparently running the Operation Metro map, but rather than offering the 32-player rush mode like the official servers, they are running a hacked version of conquest mode, allowing 128 players rather then the intended 64. The bad news is that this is, rather unsurprisingly, a "considerably" laggy experience, and worse, they pass along Electronic Arts' warning that playing on hacked servers may compromise your EA account, and may earn you a ban, which can cause you to lose access to your other EA games.

I noticed yesterday that I had some Battlefield icon in my system tray, and I closed it. Not too long after a system restart, I noticed it was there again. It's a program/plugin called ESN Sonar, and it's the PC VIOP software for BF3. It's apparently set to launch when Windows starts, which I find annoying.
I personally never talk to random people when I play games online. If I'm talking to someone while playing, it's on Ventrilo or Skype. I'm going to uninstall ESN Sonar and see if running BF3 reinstalls it.

WTH?
They should make that program launch WHEN you launch the game!
[eyebrow raised]
-
I'm actually not sure when it's loading. I thought it was on startup, but I may have been mistaken.
I uninstalled ESN Sonar, ran Origin, loaded up Battlelog and there was an update available. I installed the Battlelog update (did it update the game too? I don't know), and played for a few minutes. Then I checked the remove programs list and ESN Sonar was back. I checked to see if it was in the system tray or task manager and couldn't find it. I rebooted my system, and it's still not running, but it is installed.
Maybe it only runs when you join a party on Battlelog?
I can deal with it being installed, and even running with the game. I just don't want it sitting there when I'm not using it. It also bothers me that Origin stays open after playing, but I guess Steam does that too. The difference is that I want to use Steam.

That'd be good, if ESN Sonar ONLY runs when you're playing BF3.
Did you check and see if it is always running in the Services section?
About Steam, Origin, Impulse, XFire, Raptr, or any other service program - I got these disabled for Windows start-up.
Seriously, if I want to use these guys, I'll run the shortcut on my desktop, thanks. :P
It's annoying how every client program wants to Start-up at Windows - thanks for trying to clog-up my RAM! :P
-
Yep, even more annoyances branching from the fact that the game's interface is not autonomous. The game needs to be self-contained or at the very least have it all done through Origin since they're forcing us to use it anyway.
Aside from the BF3 exe you now have Origin, your web browser, and ESN Sonar running in the background. Sure my PC can handle it but it's a fundamentally flawed interface concept. I hate it. Sure Battlelog has some interesting features but it should have been built right into the game. It's not like they need to go back and devise an in-game interface from scratch, they've already gone through the trouble of designing it for the consoles, so now it just feels like PC players are getting gimped again.
-
That'd be good, if ESN Sonar ONLY runs when you're playing BF3.
Did you check and see if it is always running in the Services section?
Here's what I did:
-ESN Sonar was running, and I don't think it had an exit option on the system tray icon
-I opened the Remove Programs section of the control panel and uninstalled ESN Sonar
-Checked to verify it was no longer in the system tray or in the process list
-Ran Origin, clicked the BF3 beta icon to load the Battlelog
-Battlelog had an update, I installed it
-Found a server, launched the game, played for about 5 minutes
-Exited the game and looked for ESN Sonar, it was not in the system tray or list of running processes
-Checked the Remove Programs section of the control panel, and ESN Sonar was there again
-Rebooted my computer and then checked the system tray and running processes again, and did not see ESN Sonar
So I'm thinking it may run when you join a party on Battlelog. That's the one thing I can think of that I did last time I ran BF3 before today, which I didn't do today. When I initially discovered ESN Sonar in my system tray, I thought I had recently rebooted my computer, so I just assumed it had run on startup, but I think that was incorrect.
ESN Sonar could have been reinstalled because I updated the game. I should probably remove it again and run the game to see if it comes back again. To keep it off my PC, the answer might be to remove it every time the game has an update. Having it installed wouldn't bother me that much, but I'm assuming if it's not installed it can't run with the game, and I won't have to remember to close it every time I stop playing.

Yep, it's completely redundant. There is potential for putting it to good use and functionality but they're not doing anything with it at all.

PC Gamer -> Delaying BF3 PC review b/c of connection problems. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/10/24/battlefield-3-first-impressions/)
First, let’s talk about the problems.
During the review period, EA DICE ran multiplayer servers and filled them with QA testers. The servers were up and running 24/7, and the EU server tended to have around 25-30 people on it at any given time. For most of this time, only Conquest mode was available to play, though I got brief matches in Rush and Team Deathmatch.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t connect to the server most of the time. Most of my attempts knocked me out of the game before the map had loaded with a “disconnect” or “time out” error message. If I did ever successfully connect – around 1 attempt in 20 – I would still be kicked out after playing for 20 minutes. There was also one instance where I lost about an hour of progress – including increases in ranks and class unlocks – because Battlelog failed to record my progress.
I spoke to people at DICE about these issues, but we never found a solution. I’m going to keep trying, but PC Gamer won’t review the game until we’re confident we’ve played it enough, and we know what state it’s going to be in when the game is released this Friday.

The game is supposed to unlock tonight at midnight PDT. It's past midnight in Korea though. So use a proxy to fool the release date unlock tool, and you're in. I've been playing MP for a couple hours now.
I wish I had a better machine. Just about everything is on low, 1440x900, and getting 20-40 FPS depending on what's going on. I'm gonna try something other than 64 player and see if that's better.
EDIT: Yea, it runs at a much more tolerable framerate in 32 player games.

Destructoid -> Why Jim Sterling's BF3 review isn't up. (http://www.destructoid.com/where-is-that-battlefield-3-review--214444.phtml)
[Publisher's note: Jim declined to attend the planned Palm Springs Battlefield 3 event weeks ago, however a source informed us that the event may have been cancelled altogether. Some outlets simply received copies before we did, and we're also not rushing through it to be "first". Same goes for Uncharted 3.]
Battlefield 3 reviews have started going live on a number of sites, and you might be wondering where ours is. In fact, I know some of you are because you've already pestered me about it. Don't worry! The review's on its way, folks.
Basically, the reviews you saw go live this morning were based on a three-day review event that writers were invited to. Destructoid recently adopted a policy of not attending such events for a number of reasons beneficial to editorial (it was an informal rule for almost two years before we decided to officiate it). For the record, we weren't invited to this one, but since we've refused to write reviews based on events for Call of Duty, RAGE and many others in the past, it wouldn't have mattered.
Review copies for the console versions arrived today and I am downloading the PC version as I type. The PC version unlocks at midnight tonight. I am hoping to get it all played by tomorrow afternoon, though it may go through to Wednesday if I don't feel I've played enough. Depends on how much there is to do.
So that's where we are with the review, and why we're not being lazy when you see other reviews go up in the meantime (reviews that were written anywhere up to several weeks ago!)
In a reply further down from Jim Sterling:
We don't attend review events not out of laziness as one very clever person suggested, but because we don't think they're good for reviews. One's gameplay experience is married to artificially produced good feelings thanks to the free hotel, food, and often lavish treats (Black Ops gave people helicopter rides) and you have PR breathing down your necks in locally connected environments.
I don't think they lead to good reviews. I did a review based on an event a few years back and the review sucked. I'd rather play them in a natural environment without PR there to hold my hand.

Interesting discovery. When Origin is in Offline mode the game launches into an in-game main menu for the singleplayer!

That's what it should do.
SP portions shouldn't depend on the player being online to play them.
-
I find it really strange to have to exit out of the game from single player and restart it again for multiplayer. And there is no in game browser as all the stat tracking and server browsing is done from the web browser.

I happen to agree with that. I'm at odds with most Destructoid reviews, but this at least makes me think their hearts are in the right place.
And if there are connection issues with a released game, it should be brought to light in reviews and affect the scores. It affects everyone who buys the game.

The game puts a shortcut to bf3.exe onto your desktop. If you add -sp to that, it'll do the same thing. (or so I've heard, I haven't tried it)

Destrictoid -> BF3 PC Review - 7.5/10. (http://www.destructoid.com/review-battlefield-3-214537.phtml)
Basically, in short, Jim Sterling says:
The SP is not that good and it is very short [4 hours or so]
The Co-Op is nothing special, either.
He hates Battlelog and thinks it's "by far one of the worst ideas in videogame history."
The MP is really good and worth the price alone.
-
Battlelog? What the fuck? Facebook for the game?
-
So far I like the SP, though it's very clearly influenced by COD:MW. The story is not spectacular but the SP serves as a pretty decent and entertaining training sequence.
Battlelog is retarded. Its format absolutely redundant and it makes no sense that it wasn't implemented directly into the game. Yes, it's functional but it feels like the result of cutting corners and lazy design i.e. "Man, why should we reprogram this to work in the game when people can just visit the site? Gawd!"

Written review. (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/battlefield-3/review.html)
The Good
Deep and varied multiplayer competition
Awesome array of vehicles
Many gorgeous environments
Rewards teamwork handsomely.
The Bad
Campaign is disappointing and dull
Only six cooperative missions
No way to practice jet flight outside of multiplayer.

3.5 stars/5 from GamePro. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/224286/review-battlefield-3-360-ps3-pc/)

I'm having a ton of fun with the game. I also haven't touched SP yet. Been playing it during most of my free time since release.
Yes, Battlelog is shit. I haven't have a lot of problems playing because of it, but it's still a pain in the ass. It's an unneeded layer build on top of Origin (which itself is an unneeded layer). I like how when someone opens Origin, I get a popup telling me, then when they open Battlelog, that tells me they're online too. I'm not even sure the 64 player battles make it worth dealing with Origin and Battlelog, and I still wish I had gottent he game on Xbox. It was a gift from someone who wanted me to play with them on PC though, so I can't really complain when it was free.
I did co-op once, but didn't like it much. It was like horde mode from Gears of War, but with less room to move around. We failed the mission because an enemy armor vehicle drove up to and right past the line of NPC HUM-V's. As soon as he drove past them, the mission was over. So basically we're tryign to hide out of line of sight of these dozens of guys coming at us, and then have to stop everything and take out the tanks/vehicles when they come or they just drive non stop toward your back line, and letting that happen is an instant loss.
So if you strip out the SP, the co-op, Battlelog, Origin, and just look at the MP game by itself, it's amazing.
-
Yeah, I agree with you that the game is pretty awesome, but Origin and Battlelog are ruining it. I bought a new rig a few weeks ago for this game (and The Old Republic). The game looks amazing. But how can you launch your flagship title from a fucking website? And a broken one at that. It's like they wanted to implement social networking with their fucking game. That makes no sense. It's broken. I've been using it the past two days to get people to play and no one has any idea where anything is at on the website. And when we figure that out we are booted from the game. WE JUST WANT TO PLAY.
Everything about this is broken. If this catches on, PC gaming is fucked. This is like an angry Steam that wants to fuck you and doesnt work as well.
But the game is fun as hell so I endure. I feel like a whore.

Yep. I had a little bit of experience from the beta but it's no excuse to force this steaming pile on us.

Anyone surprised? (http://www.destructoid.com/pc-hackers-playing-battlefield-3-online-without-origin-215029.phtml)
I'm not.
-
That's the best news about this game I've read yet.
-
3 weeks after release, and the game still has issues. It's also still a pain in the ass just to get into a game. If I want to play, here's what I have to do:
1) Start > services > disable Avast! (doing so through Avast won't work, I have to disable the service. Leaving Avast on breaks Battlelog)
2) Turn on my Xbox controller (if I don't, the game won't recognize it, and plane/helicopter controls are terrible on a m/kb)
3) Run Origin
4) Open Battlelog
5) form a party
6) invite people to party
7) find server and party join
8) 1 of the 3 of us doesn't get in and has to manually join that server (assuming there's still room at this point)
9) Game crashes while loading and you start over from #7
10) Spend 5 minutes trying to get onto the same team, and into the same squad
EDIT: oh, and 2 maps in, it randomly switches one of my friends to the other team for balancing.
-
I got my free copy as part of the Origin Mass Effect 3 deal and....well, the system they're using (Battlelog) sucks balls. Like amazingly so. I can't just launch the game? Why the fuck are you trying to reinvent the wheel into a shittier, more annoying wheel?
-

EA/DICE: Introducing the Square Wheel. It's better! Look how flat it is!
Everybody: Uh, it doesn't roll.
EA/DICE: It's doesn't need to roll! It's better!
Everybody: Wha?!
Facebook user: Yay more Facebooky games!!
Yeah, it sucks a lot but for some reason they're hell-bent on forcing it down our throats. Even though they already designed an in-game system for use in the consoles.
BF3 is one game where it's clear that DICE made sure the engine was very PC-oriented in terms of performance and quality but they didn't touch the UI. It's exactly the same as the console versions. Instead, DICE focused all their UI efforts into this Battlelog bullcrap.
-
I'm still amazed at how silly it is in concept and execution. Also ,the game has the same hard lock problem with Realtek onboard audio drivers as Bad Company 2 had. Greeeat job DICE.
-

Yeah.. Really shitty deal. I solved it (or rather worked around it) by buying an external USB sound card.
One especially annoying feature of Battlelog is the party (and chat sessions). You don't see them in game at all. If you're invited to a party by a friend or sent an invite to join a match you'll never know if you're in the game. You have to alt-tab out or find out after you quit. It is undeniably one of the most profoundly stupid decisions in game UI history.
Bear in mind, I don't have a problem with Battlelog as a site. It is the best progress log and "social box" in the Battlefield series, arguably the best among all games. It is NOT a viable game interface nor is it even a worthy replacement for a simple game launcher. It doesn't do better than a proper in-game server browser either. It's just a mess. Not to mention all the extra background services that need to run for it to work: browser, browser plugin, SONAR, and of course Origin. If it was all reduced to just Origin, and used all of Origin's features i.e. friend list, invites, in-game overlay and browser, it would have been more palatable and perhaps more useful.
-
I'm still amazed at how silly it is in concept and execution. Also ,the game has the same hard lock problem with Realtek onboard audio drivers as Bad Company 2 had. Greeeat job DICE.
By hard lock, I assume you mean the system stops responding, needing a hardware reset. I think I've mentioned this before. Under the NT branch of Windows (NT, 2K, XP, Vista, 7), the system can't hard lock because of anything that happens at the application-code level. It can only be caused by something that runs at the kernel level, such as drivers. So unless the game is installing new drivers, the fault for a hard lock is probably Realtek's. The worst that the game code could do is give you no sound.
-
You have mentioned that before, actually. Changing my views: fuck you Realtek. But I have no idea why this only happens with these two games.
-
It's weird. On my old ASUS (with the on-board Realtek audio) it only happens with Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 as well. The system locks up with a looping sound.
-
Yeah, it seems everything I've read leads to the same thing: Realtek audio, only happens with these DICE games. Hardware issue for sure, but no idea why nothing else sets it off.
Happened to me again tonight. Still thinking about whether or not I want to drop 20-30 on a cheap soundcard for this one game. I mean, it doesn't run great on my c2d e6750 anyways, and I got it for free.
BUT DAMN THESE GAMES ARE FUN. arrgh.

If anyone wants to play, I'm ZenAgain10 on Origin.
-
If anyone wants to play, I'm ZenAgain10 on Origin.
Is that origin or Battlelog? They're different, right?
-
Is that origin or Battlelog? They're different, right?
Ridiculously, they are different.
Unlike Mass Effect 3, your Origin Friend list is the same as your Battlelog, even though the usernames are exactly the same. So if you search for ZenAgain10 on Origin you'll find him, but you'll still have to find and add him again on Battlelog in order to track each other and play together. It's counterproductive and involves a lot of redundant repetition.
-
As much as I dislike Origin, I really, *REALLY* hate Battlelog.
And gpw, it looks like you haven't played much at all. We should hop on sometime in the next week or so and I will show you the ropes.
-
I just bought this during the sale so I'll be up for some games, Origin name is PyroMenace.

Awesoooome! I'll add you guys once I get home.

Done. I just got it free with Mass Effect 3 so I haven't put much into it at all. I did end up dropping $20 on an Audigy so that the game would stop crashing, but now I've been having connection problems, hopefully temporarily.
But I'm totally down. I need to level up to unlock some more scope/weapons. Iron sights are fine, but I don't really like the 4x and would love a red dot scope like I used to tear it up with in Bad Company 2.
-
What I love about BF3's gun upgrades is they don't give you a "stat edge" over your opponents i.e. increase gun damage, increase armor, etc. They improve preferential things like stability and sights. They're geared towards the player's usage and skill rather than arbitrary damage stats.
-
I just bought this during the sale so I'll be up for some games, Origin name is PyroMenace.
Install that mofo. You're not coming up on *grumble* Battlelog.
-
I should be on now, so you can send the invites.
-
K, I got three of you added (gpw, x and pyro). Which is really convenient for a squad. :P
-
We gotta get a game going soon!
Btw, anybody been experiencing major lag and connectivity issues lately? Seems to be happening only in EA games for me so far (BF3, ME3, Syndicate).
-
Yes, for the connectivity issues at least. Although the only games I've been playing online have been ME3 and BF3, so Just assumed it was something on my end. Annoying as hell in ME3, because you lose all your xp/gold from that match.
-
Well, Battlefield 3 Premium is available. Basically it's BF3 + all DLC packs and some access to premium events. For ~$51 I could not feel more shafted.
Way to go EA, alienate your early adopters, especially those who already shelled out the extra bucks for the "Limited Edition." They should have at least arranged a special for people who already own BF3, even a simple gesture like a discount "get 30% off if you already own Battlefield 3."
Tempted as I am, I think I've already spent enough on BF3 unless the expansion goes on sale. I expect DeMartini will have something to say about that.

So yeah, when's the BF3 Ultimate Edition coming? :-x
I really am growing tired of DLC milking, Season Passes for DLC [especially before the entire DLC set is done], and any other sort of micro-transaction schemes.
I don't mind spending $ for more content, it's just - DLC is often so POORLY priced.
-
I would be really tempted to get BF Premium... if I had the Xbox version instead of the PC version.
The PC version ran bad, but playable for me. I had to turn just about everything all the way down. Back to Karkand is sub 10 fps almost all the time, and unplayable. I pretty much stopped playing not because I grew tired of the game, but because it just doesn't run well enough on my aging system. What bugs me is not that the game ran bad, but that there was such a drop in performance form the core game to BtK.
I'd just buy the Xbox version, but I hate buying a game I already own.

Wouldn't have been so simple if you could just sell your PC version? But no, it's permanently tied to your account! EA's victory over second-hand sales.
The performance drops between the base game and B2K is most likely due to B2K's destructible environments; they've added so much more physics to the maps compared to the base game.
DLC pricing schemes are pretty messed up. Basically EA are asking players to pay the game's price over again just to get the DLC! Whereas someone who didn't buy the game will be getting BF3 + all the extra content at no extra charge! WTF!!
To counter DeMartini's comments on the other thread: Now EA is discouraging players from adopting their games early because there will be no discounts and they will be inevitably screwed in the end when EA releases a comprehensive edition that early adopters will have to pay for. EA is actively alienating its player base.
-

I was going to complain about that, but if it had been on Steam it would be tied to that. If it hadn't been on a service, it would have likely had a CD Key and still might not be resellable.

Yea, $50 for 5 DLCs. I paid $30 for 4 with Gears of War 3. And actually, anyone who bought BF3 on launch already had Back to Karkand, so you're really only getting 4 pieces of DLC for $50.

I haven't touched the MP yet.
Anyways, been playing the SP. Somewhere around 4-5 hours into it. The shootouts and combat is great (as expected), but the storyline feels like it's COD: MW games (namely COD4:MW + MW2) - but with a few little different twists & turns, here and there. I wish the characters & storytelling was more interesting and had more meat to it than it does it is - but, it's serviceable enough for (this kind of) a shooter.
I must say - the game looks and runs great, though. Wow - just wow...Stunning.
Anyways, I'm gonna keep playing...
-
I started this up a couple weeks ago for some reason and jumped into SP for a bit. I did not remember the dust on the screen being so annoying. Maybe it's not there in MP? (most of my previous time with the game was in MP)
-

Yeah, it's much more reduced in the MP. The "bokeh" light effect on the screen is especially exaggerated in the singleplayer.
-
Took me about 8 hours in total to get through the BF3 Single Player Campaign. The combat's great, the graphics are absolutely incredible, and the game technically runs just-fine (over 30 FPS most of the time, according to FRAPS in 1920x1080 w/ most stuff all the way up) on my rig...
...But, the story feels like someone threw the story of COD4: MW and MW2 into the Battlefield games! Did I like it? Yes - it's good, but not great and not innovative at all. It's...missing what makes BF series what it is and always was - expansive, wide-open, free-form sandbox gameplay (in a contained mission, map, & ruleset).
Then, there's the Multiplayer - which is the absolute complete OPPOSITE of the SP. This is where it's at, folks - it's flat-out AWESOME. You probably expected that. The maps are HUGE. The MP itself feels more open, wide, expansive, and feels very free-form in its combat, pretty much. Sure, there's a TON of different game-modes and whatnot - with different rules - and you play within the rules. In Conquest Mode, you can jump in vehicles, jeeps, buggies, F18 hornets, tanks - and just go out and do whatever the objectives are and frag enemies. It's a blast and looks like a full-blown full-scale war. Of course, I've ALWAYS loved the all-out team-based frag-fest in Team Deathmatch - I've always been a fan of Team DM (and normal FFA DM, even though it ain't in BF3), in most MP games. Team DM is a blast on here, as well - especially when the servers are loaded w/ players.
If only the SP was as interesting, open, and expansive with its gameplay like the MP....

Joystiq -> EA buys ESN, the company that built BattleLog. (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/26/ea-buys-battlelog-developer/)
-
...Why?
-
EA's upcoming shooter Medal of Honor: Warfighter will also support Battlelog.
Oh for fuck's sake, REALLY?? WTF man!! We're gonna get another game with a half-ass developed interface? We don't like Battlefield 3 because of Battlelog, we like it despite Battlelog!!
-
Seeing all your BattleLog stats, picking servers, etc would be awesome, if this was all done WHILE IN-GAME.
Unfortunately, it's not. :(
-
I'm all for Battlelog as a service. One that's built into stuff, not having to alt-tab in and out of a game for though.
Why didn't they just make it like Autolog (EA's NFS counterpart)? Autolog is built right into the game, it's not intrusive, and it doesn't break up the in-game experience by making you alt-tab out!
-

I agree w/ all of this 100%.
Who the hell knows what EA was thinking - BUT this is NOT a browser-based game!
This should all be built into the game - like you said, just like AutoLog within recent NFS titles.
-
We don't like Battlefield 3 because of Battlelog, we like it despite Battlelog!!
Yeah, exactly. And you can lump Battlelog in with all of the glaring omissions or bullshit that screams cross-platform (like lack of voip or waiting 1-2 months in between patches). It's the best casual fps on the market, and I put up with all of the crap because of it, but it would have been an incredible game without cross-platforming.

PC Gamer -> PC Mod released adds more color to the game; DICE warns using it can cause a perma-ban. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/10/03/dice-hints-bans-color-correcting-battlefield-3-mo/)
Tinkering Battlefield 3 soldiers released a mod today allowing tweaks to the displayed color levels, with the most dramatic result involving the suffusion of the pervasive blue-tinged gradient into supposedly more natural colors. The sample photo album and comparison video definitely show a stark difference between stock and modified visuals, but when asked for his input on the mod, Battlefield 3 gameplay designer Gustav Halling said it was “too colorful” and warned of possible permanent bans for users.
“[It's] too colorful,” Halling tweeted. “Also, I wouldn’t use those hacks if you don’t want a permanent ban on your account. FYI warning.”
A few posters on a reddit thread discussing the mod claim they’ve already met bans for using the program. Although the notion of DICE hefting its ban-hammer over Battlefield 3 becoming too colorful seems absurd on the surface, the company is clearly adamant about protecting the competitive standards set in the unmodified game, where filters and gradients could potentially figure into each map’s overall balance.
-
Apparently the reason for banning players who use the mod is because it has options to tweak weapons etc.
I don't think they take explicit issue with colour preference. I can just as well adjust the colours on my monitor.
-
I just got the game [PC] so if anyone wants to play let me know. My game tag is coolman0stress.

EGNNow -> BattleLog = HACKED. (http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/battlelog-hacked-dice-responds/)
A hacked poll appeared on Battlelog over the weekend asking players about the Battlefield 4 beta in an attempt to steal usernames and passwords.
One on the options on the poll pointed to a website which was acting as a sign up page for the beta. DICE has since responded to the poll claiming that no data was compromised and logins are safe.
“No, logins are safe, there should be an announcement soon with more details. Edit: As a side note, it’s never a bad idea to update/change passwords regularly, but as of right now there is no cause for alarm,” the developer wrote on Reddit. “No, no data was compromised, this was simply an account being compromised.”
So no data was stolen, however it’s probably a good idea to keep rotating your password just to be safe.

I have to say that I really like Battlelog. It doesn't take me out of the experience at all like some of you mentioned. I like being able to continue doing something else while the game loads the map in the background. Having online access to the stats, loadout configuration and even server browser is kind of nice and I'd rather have a website to deal with than some convoluted custom interface inside the game.
-

Ok, where is the Hell is the loadout configuration?! I have been playing BF3 since release and I am only able to view/modify my loadouts from within the game and only after I enter a match. Even the game settings can only be accessed after entering a match game or at least loading the singleplayer first, which you also have to do through frickin' Battlelog. This is all aside from the fact that you also have to manage your party and group chat through Battlelog, outside the game, forcing you to alt-tab etc. Also, I have no idea if I get any messages from friends or in the group chat until I alt-tab out or quit the game.
By contrast, in Medal of Honor Warfighter they gave us the choice! When you first open it you're given a choice to launch the game directly or launch through Battlelog. Naturally, I launch the game directly and guess what? All Battlelog features are built right into the game interface! It's hassle-free! A friend sends me an invitation to join his game? I get a notification! I'm already in a match and a friend logs on, I can see that and send him an invitation! Easy! When Battlelog is built into the game's interface I don't have to divine information or keep interrupting my game experience by alt-tabbing in and out. I don't need to have a browser window open at all!
Implementation is the key to Battlelog. How well or poorly an interface is designed is a whole other question.
-
Click on the buttons under the progress bar under your character name at the top. Here's your loadout (http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/soldier/Xessive/loadout/178896327/pc/).
I think there's a sound when someone messages you and you can use a short cut to view it in game, can't remember what it is though since I never use the game chat system.
Again, I don't see the problem of having to alt-tab maybe because I'm used to doing it in SC2 where I let the game run in the background while I wait for friends to come online or for a match to start. Oh and Quake Live. :)

Hot damn, I'll have to check that out when I get home (Battlelog is blocked at the office).
One way I've tried to workaround alt-tabbing is with a mutli-monitor setup (which kinda seems like overkill). Of course, this only works to view Battlelog on the other monitor, if I want to use it I still have to alt-tab out of the game. I'm spoiled, I refuse to accept alt-tabbing as standard part of my gaming experience! When I'm in, I'm in for the allotted amount of time of my gaming, haha! ;D
I think I'm also biased against browser-based gaming.. I try but I never enjoy Facebook games or browser-based stuff.. It feels like mobile casual gaming, I can't take it seriously enough to enjoy thoroughly (pardon the irony). Same reason why I didn't last very long playing Battlefield Play4Free and Battlefield Heroes.

You have to stay with it long enough to see it change. You'll know what I mean when it does.

Giant Bomb was talking about whether or not it should be on their top 10 best games of the year list. They instead ended up making up a new category for it, called "the URL of the year".

Gamersgate had a sale on Premium for $20 so I got it. I played a fair amount yesterday and had a lot of fun. The more deathmatchy centered multiplayer of Modern Warfare maybe the best in its class, but nothing does the wider scale stuff better than Battlefield. Plus one of their expansions has a focus on smaller maps and infantry fighting for those that want that sort of thing and its still really good too. The destruction on those maps is pretty amazing. Anyway, my Origin ID is PyroMenace so feel free to add me though I think I've already gotten everybody on here that's playing.
