Title: Cool time lapse video
Post by: ScaryTooth on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 08:35:59 PM
Wish I had the balls(and the means) to do something like this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ky6vgQfU24)

Cool song too.

Very awesome.

I always wonder about people that do that sort of thing, though.  Where the hell do they get the money to just... not work for a year?  Somebody tell me that secret, please.  Because I would totally love to go do absolutely nothing for a year.

Very cool, makes me want to do something like this :)

Que, depending on where you go, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to travel for a year as long as you are smart about how you spend. My brother backpacked around South America for a year for relatively cheap - food was cheap and room was cheap. That's about all you need.

Awesome!

I could try making one but it wouldn't take as much time. Like 3 days to get a full goattee and a week to have the Grizzly Adams aspiring beard.

EDIT:
I would love to go ona  trek like that!

Well, you obviously can't have responsibilities at home, either. You'd most likely have to give up home, which means "home" was probably just an apartment where you just slept in like it is for a lot of university students. You probably couldn't have a "real" job. Most importantly, no one depends on you. Barring this, there are two options: you just retired or your parents own something like Burger King.

Some of the comments deal with that.  One guy is getting slammed for bringing this up in a very uncharitable way.  But it's true.  Someone is paying the bills.  Unless he has something like a Nike sponsorship, either he's independently wealthy, or his immediate family is supporting him.

The video is very cool, and inspires me.  I'm doing a lot of walking, but only in circles.  Going across China is just a little more grand.

That's it. I want to do something like that at least once within the next ten years.

Well, it's not that hard to do really in your early 20's.  You have no kids, no wife, no mortgage and you know ahead of time it's something you want to do.  It's pretty easy to save money for a few years if you have a goal in mind, and putting all your shit in storage when your lease expires is pretty cheap.  The main thing is to minimizing the expenses you'd be paying for things you wouldn't be using while you were gone and in your early 20's you could easily do that.

How much do you think it costs to live in China for a year??! This guy wasn't staying at the Ritz-Carlton, he was walking across rural China.

But he was also obviously dealing with legal issues, flying around, doing various things that weren't walking in China.  At no point in my life could I ever have saved enough to afford to do that safely and for any extended period.  But at no point in my life was I ever being supported by anyone or was ever in a position for my family to support me.

I think if you're dedicated to the notion it's possible, assuming you're not saddled with responsibilities, as stated. Of course, you'd have to make some serious sacrifices to get there (e.g. hobbies (e.g. video games), a love life, nice living quarters, etc).

Very cool.  I've been talking about doing this for years.  Hopefully.. after law school?
