Just announced at GamesCom. Smaller, lighter, less power usage, non-reflective, 120GB HDD. $299, and all current PS3s on shelves just dropped to $299. Slim model available first week of Sept.
EDIT
Figured I'd add this here. PSP getting "Minis" on PSN.
-Mini Games-
. We're announcing Minis. Smaller games, taking advantage of the smaller development cost on the PSP.
. These will be exclusive to the PSN Store and will have a 100MB size limit.
. 15 new games available at launch on 1st October. 50 titles coming in 2009.
. Tetris and Fieldrunners, are two examples.
. Also spotted Hero of Sparta and MiniGore.
Pretty much Sony taking a stab at the iPhone app store games, which is fine by me.
Also there was an announcement for a Digital Reader and the ability to buy and download comic books. PSP version that I know of, wasnt clear on a PS3.

Holy shit! I want to get one! I just hope these don't overheat like the PS2 slims.
-
Or just get a full-sized one at that price, while they last.

I actually recognize a couple of those games. Cool.
Good news all around.
-
Still overwhelmingly glad I own one of the original 60 gig models

I think the Slim is 120GB while the fullsize model going on for $299 is the 80GB model. Could be wrong though.
I personally was waiting for this, but raised tuition, minimized work schedule and possible loss of benefits makes it seem unlikely. Still, I'm pumped (although a little let down that the rumor of the return to hardware backwards compatibility didn't end up becoming reality).

I personally was waiting for this, but raised cocaine costs, increased hooker payouts and loss of black market-smuggled organ revenue makes it seem unlikely.
Indeed.

PS3 Slim Unboxing (http://gamescom.gamespot.com/video/6215525/?hd=1)
-
I don't get "unboxing" videos. Shit comes in boxes, and we usually know what the boxes contain. Do we really need a video of someone else opening it?
-
haha, I know it is ridiculous.
-
It's not the unboxing itself that I was interested in. It's the physical device. I just wanted to see it in scale and its comparison to the old PS3. So far I'm not enticed at all by the new Slim PS3. I prefer the original.
The only thing that I kinda like about the slim is the matte finish, that's just my personal preference since I don't like glossy things in general.
For the same price I'd go with the original PS3 simply because it has 4 USB ports, media card slots, and, depending on you region, they come as bundles packaged with two controllers or some games.
-
Well, I finally saw the unboxing. I have to admit, I probably shouldn't have called that ridiculous, as it was a bit fun to watch. I guess what I meant by ridiculous was the sudden trend.

Agreed, I don't really like the look of the Slim.
However, the 4 USB ports and media card slots are a thing of the past now. I believe all the 80GB (not sure about the 160s) models only have 2 USB ports and no media card slots.

That sucks. Mine only has the 2 USB ports too. I got the Japanese model. Little did I know that the X and O buttons were reversed.
Anyway, this is the PS3 I would have loved to get my hands on:

It's not glossy, it's apparently gunmetal black. Fully loaded, and comes with a demo of FFXIII preinstalled.
