Man, I miss that game.
Great memories :)
-
ROFL minimum requirements "486 66, but it always plays better on a pentium". He was probably getting 10-15 fps on that P-133.
I was going through a list of my games the other day and thought about trying to play mechwarrior 2: mercenereis again, but after watching this video I don't know if I can (tha's if I could even get it to run). It's way more primitive than I remember.

This reminds me....where's that free download release of MW4 series?

Mercs upgraded nearly everything visual so animation was more fluid and there were actual textures... still, they didn't age all that well either.
Seeing this, it amazes me how sci-fi sims have really died in the past years. We could do amazing things with them now and yet no one has bothered. Even if you took older stuff and just upgraded the graphics, there would be more tons meat than most games that involve vehicles of some sort. Granted it won't be as action packed as all that stuff, but I still think you could do something amazing with a modest budget that would cater to the crowds of people who would love a game like this again. It doesn't even need to be an established franchise, just something that was open enough where learning to drive/pilot some fantasy tank/ship is a game in of itself.

Unfortunately most mech games I can remember from recent years are all action based. Even Mechassault was an action game, and it was the same Battletech universe that Mechwarrior was based on. The only interesting mech sim game I can recall getting excited about was Steel Battalion, and I skipped it based on the price.
I honestly never got really deep into any sim type games, but Mechwarrior did at least leave an impression on me (even if I didni't play it all that much). I would love to see a modern mech sim game done right.

With the gaming industry having moved on to the mass market stage, I think it will take some time before a publisher spends big bucks on making a sci fi sim. I guess for now they are all making what they suppose to be safer investments.
As for those with modest budgets, I guess it is the same reason why we are seeing a decline in sims in general. I remember reading some sales figures in PC Gamer in an article by Andy Mahood, and it seemed that aside from MS's Flight Simulator, nothing was actually breaking even! I suppose with the regular sims not selling well, they weren't willing to experiment with sub genres.
Even the famous Falcon 2.0 series had been slow to sell.

We need new MechWarrior games -- especially ones w/ the Mercenaries brand on them -- and some more space-sims a la Freelancer and Egosoft's X3 series.

I dunno', I've really lost all interest in this sort of thing. Well, at least I say I have. The only thing to change my mind was that epic freaking trailer for that new Mechwarrior game. I kind of want that really bad. But mech sims... arg, so much time investment for sims. I picked up a cool space sim the other day and I just can't bring myself to play it very often because it's all so daunting, even though it's a bit simpler than some.

What cool space sim you pick up, Q?
