It's current be referred to as Planetside: Next. (http://bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=103072)
On PlanetSide Next

What Planetside Next means to me on Smed's Blog discusses recent indications that a PlanetSide sequel is in the works (thanks PlanetSide Universe). In the update Jon Smedley explains his love for the original game, and who he envisions its follow-up. Here's the conclusion:
To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better. Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization, and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics.
Damn I love Planetside. I really do.

I was in the Planetside beta. I didn't play a ton of it, but what I played I really liked. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like something with enough substance to pay monthly for, so I didn't buy it. I'm not sure what a sequel would need to make me feel like it was worth it, but I'm interested to see what happens with it.

Well the beta has been around for awhile and Planetside 2 has officially launched today. It's free to play with microtransactions, like Tribes Ascend. I'm gonna check it out, anyone else interested?

Nice, I didn't realize it was F2P.

A friend and I joined a... whatever guilds are called in this. We'll be playing Terran Republic on the Connery server.
After the beta, I'm not that terribly excited though. The UI is not very well explained and I felt lost in beta. I did managed to join up with a squad and help take a couple bases on the last day of beta, but still felt pretty confused about how upgrades are earned/bought, what weapons were available to what classes, and what all the map/UI icons meant.
I'm not even sure I'll be able to play today though. They didn't allow people to download the client until servers were already live. That's right, no preloading the client. It's gonna take me all day to download it.

This games plays like crap on my PC.

You're not the only one.
My benchmark is Battlefield 3; if I can run that on Ultra settings but Planetside 2 struggles on Medium something's wrong with Planetside 2.

Played this game for about 10 minutes, but it was so choppy that I couldn't see where I was going and was killed a few times. I lowered the visuals (almost down to the minimum, I think), switched servers and it was a little better. I flanked 3 enemies and as soon as I killed one, the game crashed. I'm done with this one...

That's too bad. That sounds a lot like my experience with the first one. If I had to pick keywords, they would be: confusion, lag, death, repeat.
That said, some of the reviews were pretty positive. I'm going to give it a whirl once I get my new PC up and running.
