Sweet, I remember we did all sorts of illusions like that in Uni. It's pretty amazing how your mind will do things like that for you.

Yeah, negative afterimage in our rods, cones or whatever.  I got laughed at when I tried to illustrate that to some guys I worked with when I was 15.

Edit:  Found some info (http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Afterimage#encyclopedia) on this phenomenon.

Well, to be fair, the biological composition of the Homo erectus' eye could be completely different.  They may not have seen it at all.

OK I am a retard and I don't understand what I was supposed to be seeing.

I saw a colored image with a black dot at first and then the image was replaced by a black and white one.

So?

Stare at the black dot until it turns into the black and white image.

Ummm... it turns into a black and white image regardless where I stare. It just looks like two images, one following the other, in a GIF file.
