Digital Survival on Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digital-survival-article) is an editorial first sent to GamesIndustry.biz subscribers. The article hashes through the battle for supremacy in the digital distribution marketplace, and offers some speculation of a deal between GameStop and Metaboli, and even more eye-opening, states there's "unconfirmed industry scuttlebutt" saying id Software and Bethesda Softworks parent Zenimax is considering acquiring Valve:
"However, it's also worth watching closely what happens to Steam in the coming months. Unconfirmed industry scuttlebutt suggests that Zenimax - the parent company of Bethesda, which made headlines back in June when it acquired legendary PC studio id Software - is still on the acquisition trail, and has been making eyes at Half-Life creators Valve across the bar.

If they do, maybe they will issue a mandate that all future products can't be shitty and broken.
Kidding aside, that's... interesting. I've never really been clear on exactly how big Zenimax really is. One of those companies that tends to just stay in the background and not trumpet a lot about itself or its doings.

I think the most interesting part would be this cheesing off id Software a little. They weren't totally happy with Activision since they used to be their "shooter house" before CoD really took off. Zenimax worked because they didn't have a shooter house, but if they bought Valve...
I'd actually like to see it happen just to watch people freak out.

Yea I hope this doesn't happen.

It doesn't make any difference either way. Valve is Valve and will never change regardless of who owns them. And I doubt they're going to give up the rights to Steam to anybody for any price.
