Best of IGN 2009 Awards are up. (http://bestof.ign.com/)
Best Of IGN 2009 Awards - PC Games. (http://bestof.ign.com/2009/pc/index.html)
PC Game of The Year = Dragon Age: Origins
Best RPG = Dragon Age: Origins
Best Story = Dragon Age: Origins
Best Multiplayer = Left 4 Dead 2
Award for Excellence in Sound = Left 4 Dead 2
Best Shooter = Borderlands
Best Expansion = Fallout 3 - Broken Steel
Best Action Game = Batman: Arkham Asylum
Best Adventure Game = Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Best Persistent World = Aion
Best Puzzle Game = Crayon Physics Deluxe
Best Racing Game = Burnout: Paradise - The Ultimate Box
Best Strategy Game = Empire: Total War
Award for Visual Excellence = Resident Evil 5
-
I do not see that any of the awards in question were fueled by Dew.
-
Left 4 Dead 2 - Best Multiplayer of 2008. When it was called Left 4 Dead.
Sort of a weird list. Personally I don't find Dragon Age nearly as engaging as most people seem to, and I'd have given Best Action Game to Demon's Souls (and for that matter, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes on DS gets my Puzzle Game vote), but it's a decent list. Or at least I guess it is. I didn't play Empire, haven't gotten to Broken Steel yet, and can't comment on Aion as far as persistent worlds go. I will say that Secret of Monkey Island seems like an absolutely horrible choice given how many great, original fucking adventure games there were. I think that was a stupid decision (especially since it didn't even look very good, and despite being a fan of the franchise, I'd rather go play the original).

What D has listed is purely for PC only.
Here's the PS3 and Xbox360 lists, respectively:
PS3 GOTY: Uncharted 2
Best Action Game: Uncharted 2
Best Multiplayer Game: Uncharted 2
Best RPG: Demon's Souls
Best Fighting Game: BlazBlue
Best Music Game: DJ Hero
Best Shooter: Killzone 2
Award for Visual Excellence: Uncharted 2
Award for Excellence in Sound: Uncharted 2
Best Story: Infamous
Best PSN Game: Shatter
Xbox360 GOTY: Assassin's Creed II
Best Action Game: Assassin's Creed II
Best Fighting Game: Street Fighter IV
Best Racing Game: Forza 3
Best RPG: Dragon Age: Origins
Best Shooter: Modern Warfare 2
Award for Visual Excellence: Modern Warfare 2
Award for Excellence in Sound: Modern Warfare 2
Best Story: Batman Arkham Asylum
Best Multiplayer Game: Modern Warfare 2
Best XBLA Game: Shadow Complex
To be quite honest, I think the guys over at IGN PS3 gave a little too much bias towards Uncharted 2. Yes, it's a good game, but best multiplayer? Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer suite blows Uncharted 2 out of the water. Spec Ops is leaps and bounds more fun and challenging than Uncharted 2's interpretation of Gears of War Horde mode and co-op missions are a drag. The competitive multiplayer is limited to only 10 players in Uncharted 2 as well, and to be honest, Uncharted 2's MP plays a lot like Gears of War, but the lack of a sprint/roadie run ability limits players' mobility. I didn't really like it all that much, especially compared to MW2.
Best Action game is a tough call between Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed II and Demon's Souls for me. I totally agree with best RPG for Demon's Souls, even having not yet played Dragon Age Origins. Demon's Souls is some of the most fun I've had in a game recently. I haven't played Killzone 2 aside from the demo to objectively judge it against MW2 though. I hear inFamous' story is pretty good so it's good to see it get the best story. I'll be picking it up in the near future actually.
The Xbox360 awards seem more reasonable, but without a doubt, I find the 360 lineup this year to be kind of stale. The PS3 got so many exclusive games that were just amazing (Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, inFamous, Killzone 2, God of War Collection).
It's kind of sad that Batman Arkham Asylum kind of got lost in the shuffle as well. It really is an amazing game and deserves more recognition than it's getting. It just kind of got eclipsed by releases like AC2, MW2, Uncharted 2, and the other '2' games this year.
I should post the Wii list as well, but it's just so... pointless.
Wii GOTY: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Best Action Game: Madworld
Best Adventure: Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Best Platform Game: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Best Puzzle Game: A Boy and His Blob
Best Shooter: Dead Space Extraction
Best Sports Game: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
Best Story: Silent Hill Shattered Memories
I only picked up two Wii Games this year (better than the zero games in 2008) and they were Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and A Boy and His Blob. Both are great games and are definitely worth playing. I'm interested in getting Silent Hill Shattered Memories but I hear it's a fairly short affair so it might be a rental for me. And whenever I see mention of Dead Space I keep reminding myself I need to finish up the first game some time in the near future. I'm on Chapter 9 now, so just about 3-4 hours more to go before I reach the end.
/end wall of text
-
Left 4 Dead 2 - Best Multiplayer of 2008. When it was called Left 4 Dead.
I think I had more fun w/ Borderlands' MP - on GameRanger, where it was working for me.
Don't get me wrong, I like L4D2 - but yeah, this feels like a stand-alone expansion to me.
I will say that Secret of Monkey Island seems like an absolutely horrible choice given how many great, original fucking adventure games there were. I think that was a stupid decision (especially since it didn't even look very good, and despite being a fan of the franchise, I'd rather go play the original).
I don't understand why they didn't have a "Best Re-Release Award" or something. I think w/ Secret of MI Special Ed, Enhanced Remake of Riddick: Butcher Bay placed on Riddick: Dark Athena, and The God Of War Collection here, we might see even more older games get re-releases and have say extra content and enhanced graphics features, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a growing trend, too - w/ the way things are going.
It seems really odd to me they're giving an award for an OLD game that basically got re-released w/ additional extra graphics features and other content when - like Que said - there's other NEW adventure games that got released this year for the first time. WTF, IGN?
I have Secret of Monkey Island - Special Ed (thanks to when it was like $2.50 on Steam, not too long ago) downloaded and installed, but I ain't even looked at it yet.
-
Thanks iPPi, I hadnt seen the console lists yet. Man, they really love Uncharted 2.

You guys ever notice that most Game of the Year awards end up being given to games that are roughly less than two months old? Is that because big, quality games are held for release this time of year or is it because gamers have a short memory and cant remember anything that came out in the spring and summer?
Sure you get some stuff that came out earlier, like Chinatown Wars for DS there. But theres a lot of Uncharted 2, MW2, Borderlands, Demons Souls, etc. Not to say they dont deserve it just because they are newer...but...yeah.
-
I think it is a bit of both.
I guess it is the same with the oscars, where movies that can win those awards are normally released near awards season.
Here the motivation is the holiday season of course.

Must get Demon Souls...
-
There you go Idol, Gamespot remembers the earlier games of the year. Killzone 2, Trials HD, Prinny, several others.
-
Wow Trials HD looks a lot like an old PC game I used to play called Elastomania, which was a lot of fun but challenging. I might have to check it out.
It's definitely surprising to see Demon's Souls as PS3 GOTY from Gamespot... I'd have thought they would give it to Uncharted 2, like many others.
-
I was really shocked Cryostasis got Best Story - especially being up against big name titles like DAO. I knew that was a game I missed and really wanted to play, back when it came out and all. Thanks for the reminder, GameSpot. Gonna have to go find that one. :)
-
I picked that up during one of the GoGamer sales and still haven't played it. Need to do that, it looked cool. Glad to see Demon's Souls get rewarded for actually innovating. I don't care how cool Uncharted 2 was, there wasn't anything terribly unique about it (well, from what I gather... I haven't played it).
-
Best Strategy Game = The Sims 3 (PC)
wat?
I suppose it can be classified as a strategy game, but man it must have been a shitty year for more traditional strategy titles.
-
Gamespot's Overall Game of the Year = Demon's Souls (PS3)
Definitely a surprise there.
-
Gamespot's Overall Game of the Year = Demon's Souls (PS3)
Definitely a surprise there.
Wow. Congrats to Demon's Souls.
-
That's a huge surprise, in fact. Good choice, though, and it's great to see the game getting recognition, especially since it's so old-school and unforgiving in its general mentality.
-
GameTrailers' GOTY awards are all out now and wow... The best console game nominees are pretty bad. They're all Batman Arkham Asylum, Street Fighter 4, Assassin's Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2 and GTA4 The Ballad of Gay Tony (X360) and Uncharted 2 (PS3). DAO, Demon's Souls, and Killzone 2 seem to be missing from the lists.

Best Multiplayer: Modern Warfare 2
...
GOTY: Modern Warfare 2
Best PC Game: Modern Warfare 2
Best PS3 Game: Modern Warfare 2
Best Xbox360 Game: Modern Warfare 2
Geez - why didn't they just give MW2 Best Multi-Platform Game?
Winning every platform really takes away awards from other games - I remember when GameSpot did the Best Multi-Platform Award back in the day b/c of such matters. I remember when Hitman 2: Silent Assassin won such an award - b/c across all platforms, no matter what version you picked, you couldn't go wrong w/ it. Designers who make a game for multiple platforms - and they all turn out about equal - yeah, they deserve an award for doing right for every platform.
Though on another note - MW2 getting Best PC Game? Really? Even w/ all the blunders of the rampant cheating, no ded-servers and possibly no SDK plans? :o
Best Software Lineup: PS3
Best Wii Game: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Biggest News Story: Motion Controls
Best Sports game: NHL 10
Best Fighting Game: Street Fighter IV
Best Racing Game: Forza 3
Best Story: Uncharted 2
Best Graphics: Uncharted 2
Best Third Person Shooter: Uncharted 2
Best Action/Adventure: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Oh, Street Fighter 4 on my PC kicks major ass. I can't argue w/ SF4 getting Best Fighter. The game's awesome.
About Best Story - geez, I figured Dragon Age would take that home...
Best RPG: Demon's Souls
Best New IP: Demon's Souls
I figured it'd be b/t Demon's Souls or Dragon Age.
Though - WTF at no love for Borderlands in any category it might have a chance in - (Shooter, New IP).
EDIT:
Some of the awards ippi left out from GTTV...
Biggest Surprise - Batman: Arkham Asylum

Most Divisive Game: Flower
Best Song In A Non-Rhythm Game: "Everybody Loves Donuts" from Splosion Man
Best Late Title Card: X-Men Origins Wolverine
Best Original Soundtrack: Shatter
Well there they are, if anything Brad's noteworthy attention to the Silent Hill Wii game has made me curious.
Edit: Also to note, each of the main awards, PS3, XBox 360, Multiplatform each have their own quicklook. I was watching the Wii game one (Silent Hill) and its making me want the game more.
Edit 2: Fuck that game... I want it, but at the same time I don't. It looks as stressing and immersively frightening as the original one, which is the only one that I played... and quit because I'm too much of a pussy.
-
Dave Snider's Eastern Bloc Game of the Year Brought To You By Dave Snider: Cryostasis - The Sleep of Reason
Damn, I gotta get this game...
Best Performance by Nolan North: Nathan Drake
My God, how many games did Nolan North (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolan_North#Video_games) wind-up in this year? Geez... :o
Uncharted 2 (Nathan Drake); Assassin's Creed 2 (Desmond Miles); Halo Wars (Sgt. Forge); Halo 3: ODST (Romeo); Shadow Complex (Jason Fleming); Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (War Machine); DAO; Infamous; X-Men: Origins - Wolverine; Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (Guard); Red Faction: Guerrilla; Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen - The Game; etc.
-
That's a pretty decent list. Doesn't smack so much of "big game syndrome" as a lot of these things do now. I'm really glad that Brad was so into SH. Just picked that one up the other day and plan to play through most or all of it on Sunday. I'm really excited about it. I put down SH5 not all that far in because I think the formula is starting to wear on me, but this one looks so refreshingly different and just drops the combat entirely, which were the weakest parts of the series (though SH5 did that better than all the others from what I can tell). My love for the franchise has been rekindled a bit lately, so hopefully I'll be getting through both of those games in the next while.
-
Best Strategy Game = The Sims 3 (PC)
wat?
I suppose it can be classified as a strategy game, but man it must have been a shitty year for more traditional strategy titles.
I don't think so.
DOW2 and Empire: Total War don't sound like slouches to me.
How the hell did these two get lost on the GameSpot's GOTY Genre List?
Hmmmm...DOW2 did come out on Feb 2009, Empire: TW was in March 2009.
I could say seeing Sims 3 winning Best Sim Game, but NOT Best Strategy.
-
Sorry. Best sim game would be ArmA II for sure, unless there's some obscure flight or space sim that I missed.
-
Sorry. Best sim game would be ArmA II for sure, unless there's some obscure flight or space sim that I missed.
Dunno if you'd consider this on the Sim list for 2009....
X3: Terran Conflict was released in April 2009 on disc in USA.
X3TC was released on Steam in Dec. 2008 in USA, actually.
Released in October 2008 in Europe on disc.

Mirrors Edge and Doom 3 should not be on that last list.
Both were solid efforts and really don't belong on the list, if you ask me.
Also, Best of the Decade list is missing Tribes 2.
Baldur's Gate 2 is missing, as well.
-
That's still a pretty damned interesting list that gives some good but generally overlooked games more attention. Definitely not the usual meaningless industry blowjob these things usually are.

Agreed.
I think Big Download's list is one of the better lists I've seen for 2009 and Decade Awards, actually.
-
Was nice to see Eufloria get some attention too. I should really start a thread for that one.
