Can't say I'm terribly surprised. (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1075573)
Itīs been great working with this game, but as we all know, all good things come to an end. I would like to give a huge THANKS to the community and all fans of Shattered Horizon for the support. You have helped us mould this game to the near perfection that it is today.
DONīT PANIC!
Now this does not mean that the game is dead, itīs just that there are less people making it. I mean, as you all know the game didnīt sell as well as some other games, and that has itīs effects.
Oh well, this is not the end. Itīs the beginning. Iīm looking forward to what life brings next.
Lets see now:
A developer only known for making benchmarks, not games.
DX10 only, which cuts off all the people that still use XP. Didn't they see how well Halo 2 and Shadowrun did with that?
Multiplayer only. Not even bots. Its pretty well established that most people still don't play online.
Only sold online. Again, lots of people still buy retail.
Only sold via Steam. I know its the most popular DD outfit, but its still cutting you off from people that don't like it.
No demo. So with all the things said above, there was no way to play a bit of it yourself to see if it was something you even wanted.
Not sure how they could top that. Maybe they could have made it only run on ATI cards or something.

I'll add another point:
I never heard of it.

I never heard of it.
Same.
-
Yeah, not much advertising that I noticed.
-
The one review I saw of it actually wasn't bad at all and said there was a lot of potential with future updates.
For those who haven't heard of it - the guys who do 3D Mark decided to try to make a game.

Cool, was it about dragons breathing fire on unfortunate cities and civilians?
-
Haha, no - not too far off though. I guess they've been running one of the same benchmarks pretty much since '03 (the space themed one). They basically made that game.
-
Hmm, I don't remember that part. That's unfortunate.

The game actually looked pretty damn awesome and I would have loved to try it. But due to an amazingly bad combo of Steam, DX10, and no demo...I currently have no plans to play it.
-
Same.

I just watched a video on Steam. It looks pretty cool, though the idea of space "ground" troops is absolutely, hilariously ridiculous to me.

I never heard of it.
-
Yeah, I remember seeing some stuff about it. Same thing for me... far too restrictive. No way I'll ever play it no matter how cool it looks.
Also... wow, I remember being totally blown away by that 3D Mark segment back in the day. It's crazy how the amazing becomes commonplace.

I'll add another point:
I never heard of it.
Yeah, me neither.
It's pretty bad when a bunch of people here have never heard of it. We have threads for pretty much everything.

This game could be great. COULD be. As it is, it kind of sucks. It requires a beast of a PC and still kind of looks shitty. Oh, and it's crashed my videocard drivers three times. Never had another game do that on Windows 7.
-
I agree, I played a little bit of it. I have a pretty decent machine and I had framerate issues and yes, it doesn't look great either.
-
It's a shame too, because the gameplay could end up being really fun if fleshed out a bit more (especially for $10-$20). You know, if it ran.
-
Yeah, me neither.

I have a feeling this was an experiment. They probably are quite rich from their 3Dmark software, and here they decided to test the waters with their first attempt at making a game.
The game was on steam only and for a low price $20, and they didn't spend anything on marketing.
I expect to see a proper game from them at some point.
-
Uh-oh. Now that the trial is over I kind of really want to play again. I have a feeling that it's not worth the cash though...especially with fewer players on servers.

On sale for $9.99 on Steam currently.
FREE Update released for Shattered Horizons. (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1995245#post1995245)
All game types can be played in offline SP and or online MP.
Bots have been added to game.
The Last Stand game mode can be played offline with bots or in online co-op with friends. Like all Shattered Horizon content updates released to date, the Last Stand pack is free for all players.
Shattered Horizon Last Stand pack
- Play all game types in single player mode with bots.
- Choose the number of bots and set the difficulty level.
- Play the new Last Stand game mode which pits a team of four against waves of increasingly difficult bot enemies.
- Last Stand mode can be played with bot team mates in single player, or with friends in online co-op.
- Server hosts can optionally add and configure bots for multiplayer games.
- Bots will leave a multiplayer game to make room for real players, and rejoin to make up team numbers.
"Shattered Horizon's multiplayer can be tough for new players. Not only do they have to learn the skills required for zero gravity combat, but they have to do so while going up against the game's experienced community," said Jaakko Haapasalo, Director of Futuremark Games Studio.
"Now there's an alternative. The Last Stand pack adds single player to all game modes making it the perfect way for new players to learn the game, practice to improve or just play for fun."
