Is that worth it for $12? I have never played a Battlefield game.
Also, do you need to pay to be able to play online?

Yesterday Steam had it for $15 or so! It's $30 now.
You don't need to pay to play online. At least I don't recall ever paying to play online when I was in Canada.
If you have Crysis (or Crysis Wars) or Modern Warfare 2 BF2 won't be anything special. I didn't even enjoy it all that much when it was fresh. By contrast I loved Crysis Wars and I'm really enjoying MW2. To each his own I guess.
Anyway, the community is still pretty big for BF2 so you can still enjoy some multiplayer.

I've never experienced Crysis Wars, but I don't know that I'd directly compare MW2 to BF2. BF2 has that whole larger scale thing with vehicles and such, where MW2 is just traditional on foot gameplay modes.
Also, I just checked the other day and apparently 2 of the expansion packs are free now. I have just the base game, and the 1.5 patch includes 2 of the addons.
