Title: I just got an iPod touch...
Post by: ScaryTooth on Thursday, January 07, 2010, 02:41:08 PM
Was at target and it was on sale for $187. So I got it. The girlfriend has one and she likes it quite a bit. I'm thinking when I get bored at work just sitting around, I can just dick around on the internet with it. Or listen to pandora radio or somerthing.

I've been thinking about getting a Zune HD, which I really really like. But it doesn't have flash support. Which is a big deal for me. Because as I stated, I really wanted to listen to pandora radio when I get bored with my music collection. Not to mention Youtube. Thing is, the ipod is only 8gb. Where as the zune is 16, and it had a radio and a hd radio tuner.

Anyway, anyone else have the touch? how do you like it? I'm having slight second thoughts about it.

I used to really want an iPod Touch, but that ship has sailed.  I now think of them as sort of nerfed iPhones, and I don't even like the iPhone all that much.  Like ScaryTooth, I like the new Zune HD.  But I'll just get by with my 8 GB iPod Nano 2G for a few more years or until I get a Droid or Nexus One, whichever comes first.

I'm liking it so far. Just kind of been messing with it all evening. Doing homework, listening to some music. Stopped by a coffee shot earlier and was checking out reddit, and overwritten. I like the apps for it. I kind of want the ballistics calculator app...just cause...

Also watched half o Iron Man on it..nifty.

On the downside, the ear buds suck. My ears hurt after about an house or listening to the ipod. I'm going to have to pick up some different ones.

I've had one for a year now and I love it. You can toss it in your pocket and walk around with it and browse the web whenever you get near wifi (which I guess is the big drawback - it needs wifi unlike the iPhone). I basically just use mine to browse the web and listen to music. Typing is tedious on it, though.

And yeah - the ear buds are the worst things ever invented. Get some new headphones.

I really like mine, I also have an 8 gig. The hospital I work at has free wifi so Im able to surf the web on my breaks, plus there really isnt anything out there yet that compares with its' app store and to be honest I dont really check out the games there that much which however there is some good stuff on there. Mine is mostly used for podcast listening, music, and web surfing. The only downside I have with it is dealing with iTunes which I nearly can't stand. Switching from computer to computer is a hassle since every time you switch to a new computer thats been authorized, it treats the thing like a goddamn alien device, asking you to delete everything on your ipod. I only bring iTunes up if I have to change music, which isnt too often, but when I do, it resets all my podcasts which have been paused... so annoying.

You didn't post in my thread about this issue (http://www.overwritten.net/forum/index.php?topic=6029.0) and a solution, so I don't know if you read it or not.  I agree that iTunes makes things difficult, probably on purpose.  I have never played with a Touch, so I don't know if you can enable hard-drive functionality like the Nano's, or if the folder structure would be the same.  Assuming that you can, the gist of the solution is to dump the music from the iPod to the new PC and then add it to iTunes.  After that, you can use iTunes to add it back to the iPod along with whatever else you want from the new PC.

For apps, you're on your own.

The biggest thing I hate about iTunes is that it doesn't like it when you move stuff around.  Right now I have all my music stored inside a virtual Linux file server, which I decided is not a good idea.  File servers shouldn't be virtualized.  It was a fun project and I store installers there, but as the storage for all of my music with no backup, I have to do something else.  I have tons of space on my desktop PC and I recently got an external drive so I can at least do a backup now, but if I move it over there iTunes will hate me.  I've seen tools that help with this sort of thing, but ultimately they delete the old instance of the files in the library and re-add them in the new location.  I would lose my ratings, which I use to keep music I don't really want on my iPod Nano off.

I've switched computers/hard drives three or four times with iTunes and haven't lost my ratings or play counts.

1) Install iTunes but don't open it.
2) Paste all the music onto the new drive including the old iTunes library files.
3) Open iTunes

It automatically saw the old library file and used that. All playlists, play counts and ratings were automatically there.

Your situation is a bit different because you're not switching to a new computer but the general premise is the same.

Maybe not though, for some reason everything that works for me on iTunes seems to be broken for everybody else.

Does the iPod actually have Flash support now?  I thought the big deal was that both it and the iPhone still didn't have Flash support and you could only watch streaming video through special apps/sites. For instance, Youtube works, but the browser won't play actual flash sites like justin.tv (fucking awesome for watching sports while away from the TV, by the way)
