Title: Fixed: Major PS3/PSN Problem
Post by: iPPi on Sunday, February 28, 2010, 07:39:35 PM
http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/announcements/39949-read-psn-service-down-some-titles-unplayable.html

Apparently, either something is wrong with PSN or the PS3 firmware.  Games don't work, trophy progress is being lost, save files are being lost, logging in to PSN doesn't work, DTG is going to Dec 31, 1999, etc.  A wide spectrum of problems are being reported right now.  Sony is aware of the problem.  It's possible that a leap year bug exists in the firmware or something.  It is unclear what is wrong though.

Apparently, games without trophies are working but games with trophies are not.

I would highly recommend refraining from using your PS3 at this moment.

My major PS3 problem at the moment is my girlfriend. But I guess the trade off is nice.

Well, that sucks a whole lot.  I wanted to play Heavy Rain tonight, and now I get to... sit here in my empty apartment.  I have the internet, at least.

Based on 'mob speculation,' it's believed that the 'fat PS3s' calendar has a bug in it, which is what is causing the problem.  Slim PS3s are working fine, as idol indicated above.  This is speculated because consoles that are normally not connected to the internet are also reported to not work.  So, it is probably not a problem with PSN, though there may be PSN related issues as well since Sony redesigned their PSN website and other features recently.  Who knows...

Hopefully Sony fixes this problem ASAP.

I have a slim PS3... but I think my problems with Heavy Rain were unrelated.

That is the biggest console-related crock of shit I have ever heard of, bar none.  (I'm thinking 3DO here, which comes close--the whole 3DO experience, I mean.)  So let me get this straight.  If a PS3 game can't register trophy information, the OS terminates the running game and dumps you back to the system UI?

This "next gen" generation is going to be remembered for hardware failures. What a catastrophe.

Quote
No. The internal clock is at 29.02.2010 - GMT timezone
The software function calls this and adds the difference with what you configure.
But the 29.02.2010 gives a INVALIDDATERETURNED error - so your PS3 can't calculate the correct date.

Tomorrow the internal clock will be at 01.03.2010 - GMT timezone.
You will not get an invaliddatereturned error.
Your PS3 will work without a problem (but it will be 24 hours behind)
A post on neogaf. So if we're lucky, everyones PS3 will be "fixed" by 6PM central even if Sony doesn't get an actual fix out before then.

haha that Hitler thing never gets old.

Anyway, it is just my luck. I finally start to get into console gaming, and they start acting like PCs. Well, with these things getting more complex by the generation, it is to be expected.

I'd still rather suffer this than the RROD... which I have suffered. :(

The PSP seems to function perfectly well. I only mention it because it also logs into PSN for the store and any online authentication. Wish I could weigh in on the PS3 but it's all the way back in Abu Dhabi.

Either way it's the 1st of March and all will be well.

It's a system problem with the PS3, and has nothing to do with PSN.  As I understand it, you could have been offline entirely forever with a non-slim PS3, and it still would be acting up right now.

No shit.
To be exact - the guy playing Hitler in Downfall (or whatever the movie is titled)...

Yeah, I just read some more about it. It's pretty strange.

Currently the Heavy Rain and a bunch of other PS3 boards are down, and have been for half a day.

I can't help but think this will end with the ritual suicide of a Japanese Sony exec.

My question still remains.  If a game can't register trophy information (let me add "for whatever reason") will the OS terminate it with an error and dump you back to the system UI?  I find that rather unacceptable.  One more related question:  Do you have to be connected to PSN in order to play games bought through PSN?  I ask because it seems to me that this problem was way more severe than it should have been because of strict big brothering behind the scenes.  An error condition with the date causes the system to assume you can't be allowed to do shit on your own console.  Disturbing.

No, you don't normally have to be connected to anything.  As was said, this wasn't a problem with PSN, it was something broken with the system's internal clock, I guess.  It wasn't an online functionality thing, it was something internal that was screwed up.  It's not as disturbing as it sounds.  It's just kind of stupid.

No, you don't have to be online to play PSN games. So I'm not sure what that trophy error was all about. My guess would be since the system hardware was generating a date that didn't exist, the OS was freaking out and resetting the date back to the year 1999. Since this date is well before trophies already unlocked, the system might think something fishy is going on (a hack attempt or someone cheating trophies) and errors out?

Yeah, that's what I mean.  The system literally loses track of time, assumes it's the player's doing and pulls the plug on everything.  Thanks for replying, guys.  At least it's back to normal now, and I guess surviving old systems will sail through 2012 since it really is a leap year.  There's always the Mayans, though.   :)

I'm sure they'll fix this with a firmware update in short order.  It's just good that it quickly reverted to a usable state without anyone having to interfere.  It's a dumb error, but it beats a RROD any day of the week.

They have some time. Guess this error wont happen again until 2014.
