Title: Illinois Railway Museum pics
Post by: idolminds on Monday, October 30, 2006, 09:31:23 AM
About a month ago I went to the Illinois Railway Museum. Its not a stuffy building with dioramas and little TV screens showing you train history. It's mostly just large building with trains and train cars inside them. You walk down the small pathways between them. No guides, few signs, you just go and see all this cool stuff.

I just quickly resized some of the better/more interesting shots and put them up on Flickr (http://flickr.com/photos/idolminds/sets/72157594351989239/). Its really tough to get shots of the trains. In the buildings the lighting is very dim with no place to set the camera for a longer exposure. Plus I really needed a wide angle lens to get a lot of the stuff in. Oh well, they turned out pretty cool either way. I might add comments to them when I get back home tonight with some more details on some shots.

Oh, and these pictures dont really show just how massive the trains really are. Standing next to them is awe inspiring. One of the big black steamers had wheels as tall as I was, made of solid metal.

That's awesome.  I hate "train enthusiasts" probably more than I can physically express using language, but I really do think trains are pretty interesting.  Plus I love museums and anything old.  Fun pics, thanks for sharing.  =)

Great photos man! Trains are great ;D They're my second favourite mode of transportation ;D

I don't understand people who are obsessed with model trains and making a huge track in their basement for the train to go around.. Granted it can be quite an accomplishment, but I just don't get the fascination.
