Watch the video report...

A member of the Institute of Contents Culture, who did not want to give CNN his name, said restricting game themes limits freedom of expression.
"In my opinion, RapeLay's storyline went too far. However, if a game creator wants to express something and create content out of it, a government or public entity shouldn't have the power to restrain it."
If you can ban any kind of pretending, you can ban all kinds of pretending.
I agree that the game is despicable. So are Nazis marching on a town square. Our freedoms aren't tested by grandma going to church in her Sunday best. They are tested by examples like these.
-
"where the only way to win... is to rape"
oh my!
-
Wha? Did they just discover the Japanese Hentai scene? These kinds of games have been around for years! Sure, this particular one is more focused on it.
What about rape scenes in anime or movies?
EDIT:
They should make a game where you play as a female sexual predator who rapes dudes.. That's just to counter the feminist argument.. Of course it will sell terribly.

Que and I are still waiting for the next big hit in sex video games: Consensual Marital Sex with Adult Partners
I'm sure it'll be a smash.
-
Indeed. Though I'm pretty sure My First Booty Safari will help to make the wait easier.

WTF @ Canada and Australia

Don't forget those numbers are the reported statistics. Japan sort of has an elephant in the room approach to all things sex. I've only talked to two Japanese women about the topic, but they both had stories and knew several other women who experienced some sort of sexual abuse (mostly groping on a subway). I don't know how that translates into complete rape, but I would image the real numbers behind this sort of thing are underrepresented for Japan. Conversely, the top countries there are all pretty women sexually to differing degrees. I imagine sexual abuse gets reported a lot more there.
Now, the trick is if you can correlate rape with the mass use of games and media like this is another trick. Who knows really and it is strange that CNN is picking up on this now. The fact that there's a sizable market for this sort of thing makes me leery of Japanese culture, but I can say one causes the other. Odds are we're just seeing two symptoms of the same problem.
-
Yea I have this mental image of Japan as a bunch of misogynistic pedophiles, and child rape games are likely not the cause, but the result. for instance, why the hell do Japanese women in porn (both high production and amateur) cry during sex? Is that what Japanese men like?
-
All cultures are different. But rape is hardly only a fascination to Japanese men. There's quite a sizable market in Europe for rape porn, too. Not games, likely, but then games are bigger in Japan than probably anywhere.

The fringes of Japan's culture condemned by Western feminists. No surprises there. I'm glad to see that story has some balance.

UK says fuck you anime nerds. (http://www.backlash-uk.org.uk/wp/?page_id=547)
Seems as good a place as any to put this link.

My condolences to Great Britain for their great loss. Here's hoping that freedom of expression doesn't suffer a similar fate in the United States. So now a child doesn't have to be involved at all, eh? Just drawing freehand from your own imagination can land you in jail across the pond. I am so frightfully sorry.
-
Me too. Not because there isn't sick shit in the world, but because this is a dangerous, dangerous precedent. Government should not have this kind of power.
-
I don't think this is very new. The UK has been less free than the US or Canada for quite some time now.
-
Yeah, there's actually a lot of other scary stuff over there.

What? Guys, that's women raping men. You should all fucking move here.
But really, statistically, white people are more prone to being rapists . WE HAVE A LOT OF WHITE PEOPLE.
Also, that is a really fucking stupid argument.
Yeah, there's actually a lot of other scary stuff over there.
They banned Day of Defeat retail years ago....those bastards!
-
they we banned day of defeat? really?
-
No, apparently not. I remember reading about the retail version being denied classification years ago because of some reason or other (letting you play as the enemy? But a lot of games do that). I can't, however, find a single thing on it now. I'd blame an April Fools Day prank from around 2002-2003, but it also could have just been a dream.
