Haha yeah, that and flourish.mid were common MIDI test tracks, but town.mid is new to me.

Hmm, I wonder if I can reinstall the Yamaha SXG SoftSynthesizer drivers on Win7.

Yes, it depends primarily on the synthesizer capability in each computer's audio. Certain software synthesizers, like the Yamaha SXG, can emulate certain hardware. Results will vary depending on your sound card.

Midis are really just instruction sets and each computer plays them with what ever instruments it can simulate.

Electronic organs and pianos can play them too! The new ones have USB slots but I still remember the old ones that had floppy drives.

I guess that's why midi files are so small?   Also, pretty much why they aren't used much anymore now that filesize isn't a huge issue for, well, pretty much anything.

Yeah, plus for a midi to sound great it needs the hardware to back it. Also synthesizing voice is pretty tough.

Most stuff by Robert Miles (without vocals) sounds pretty good in midi format! That's probably because his music is mostly electronic to begin with.

After midis came mods, which are basically the same idea plus sound samples in the mod files themselves.  These produce better sounding, wholly hardware-independent tracked music.  The SNES uses this approach well.

Yeah, there are quite a few classic game soundtracks and sound effects in .mod format out there. I know Winamp will play those straight up.

For all you karaoke fans, .kar files are basically karaoke-specific midis.

Man, I wanna dig up some classic soundtracks now.
