Awesome... I don't keep up with E3 news anymore because I don't read major sites, so this will be good for me.

First news: Natal is renamed Kinect (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2010-06-14-vidgame14_ST_N.htm)

Games:
Quote
•Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.

•Joyride, a racing game, lets players use their hands to hold an imaginary steering wheel — pull your hands toward you and push back out for an acceleration boost — and their bodies to execute jumps and tricks.

WiiKinect Sports has six activities including boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. To serve a volleyball, you mimic the real motion; in soccer, you can kick the ball or do a header.

•Kinect Adventures includes a river-raft time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.

•Dance Central, in development by MTV Games, brings a So You Think You Can Dance experience home.

•Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.

MS press conference is starting. This is from the Wire live blog..

Quote
10:30 AM — Music pumping from the PA! Lights blaring! This is like riding Space Mountain! I’m pumped up! For marketing!

10:31 AM — Lights go down. Sizzle reel begins. It’s a trailer for a military videogame. What is it? Men jump out of helicopters! They shoot things! I have never played a videogame like this ever! Is this the future of humanity?

10:32 AM — No, it’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Kojima was there showing Metal Gears Solid: Rising. Apparently there was a lot of cutting and spine removal.

Well, that was dull. CoD and Halo, then some MGS which sounded cool. The rest was all about Kinect and all the Wii-clone games it'll have (and no mention of price...it won't be good, I'm sure). Oh, and 360 slim. 250GB HDD, built in wifi, for $299. And they pulled an Oprah and everyone at the conference gets one.

Boring. Oh yeah, and no mention of any PC stuff. Way to go, MS.

Provided reviews are favorable, It's probably time to consider trading ol' whitey toward one of those slims.  Doesn't look like the HD's are interchangeable, which kind of sucks.

EAs conference is coming up next. Mirrors Edge 2, its all I ask....please....

EAs twitter account says there will be Bulletstorm footage. Its already a better conference than MS.

3D glasses were handed out. Great...

EAs conference is doing much better. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit being made by Criterion. Then they showed some Dead Space 2 (with more to be shown at Sonys conference...Move support?), and now some Medal of Honor that is apparently modern day and not WW2. Demoing 24 player multi with all 24 players on stage. The cynic in me is amazed people are...amazed at 24 players. We were doing that shit back in the Quake 2 days. Its not really that impressive, even if it is fun.

We knew MOH Reboot (http://www.overwritten.net/forum/index.php?topic=5950.0) was modern day long ago.

So, is Hot Pursuit a remake? A reboot? Or what?

EDIT:
More info on NFS: Hot Pursuit (2010) - you'll be able to do a career mode and play as either a cop OR a racer. Cool. (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/64276)

Man, things are not looking good for Kinect. Gamestop had a preorder up for a short period of time with a price of $149, and now they say if you have a non-slim 360 you'll have to have another outlet to plug the thing in with. Slim 360s have a dedicated Kinect port.

Yup, for Crysis 2.

Oh, this (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/64284) is what I'm talking about...

Ubisofts show has been...interesting. Child of Eden is basically Rez with Kinect controls. Then they showed off the new Assassins Creed. And Shawn White Skateboarding is being described as "Jet Grind Radio meets Flower" which basically sounds fucking awesome. I'll have to see the video.

Watching UbiSoft Conference. They showed a trailer for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - now they are having it being demoed.

This looks like a stealthy and slow-paced, since you have a suit that can go invisible/cloak. Plus strategic, since you have a team w/ you - in typical Ghost Recon fashion.

Firefights look good, too - w/ duck and cover and all of that 3rd person shooter stuff.

It's gonna be in 3D, as well...

Man, the UbiSoft DRM really makes me a sad panda...

EDIT:
Driver: San Francisco is up next...
Driver: San Francisco will have SP and MP components.
You can switch to a viewpoint while playing to be behind the wheel when playing, as well.
Shift Mode in the game seems just....strange...

EDIT 2:
Nadeo's up w/ ManiaPlanet for the PC...
Okay, here's what they're up to.

Remember how Nadeo invented tools and people basically can create what maps and stuff they want for Trackmania?

Good...besides Trackmania 2 that's coming, they're ALSO gonna aim for different other genres w/ user-generated content for two other planned games: Shootmania (for FPS's) and QuestMania (for RPG's).

ManiaPlanet? Fuck me, I want.
I think they're all separate games, as they all have different release dates...
But, yeah - I love the idea of this them going after different genres besides racing here...
Especially w/ QuestMania for RPG's...

Oh, yeah...looks like individual games still. Well at least we know they arent dead. It feels like its been years since I first heard about Shoot/Questmania. Will be interesting to see what they end up being like.

Of course they will probably have Ubis shitty DRM so I'll never play them anyway. Still, will be neat to see.

Kind of funny that Ubisoft actually came out and showed some PC stuff even when they aren't exactly loved on PC now. They showed more than MS did.

I'm really interested in seeing Shootmania and Questmania - I'm definitely a big FPS and RPG nut.

Ubi might have that nasty DRM, but they still seem to recognize that there are gamers on the PC who want their content there. I wouldn't be surprised if most are their sales have been through Steam, since EVEN w/ nasty DRM for games like SC: Conviction and AC2 on the PC, when those games were about to come out OR Steam has one of their bundle-sales, it sold well...

I'm watching G4TV - they just showed-off Witcher 2 PC. I want this.

I wouldn't jump on the wagon just yet.  There's not yet a reason to believe these will be any more or less reliable than the current generation.

I am sure they will be sporting the current jasper chips which are quite successful. The only worry is if the smaller form factor will result in worse airflow, and as a result, a much higher system temperature.

Remember the PS2 slims? So prone to dying they were.

Well, the slims may sport further integration and even smaller chips, maybe 45 nm like the PS3 slim?

Found something. (http://gaming.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=22951)  I read a story like this one before, which is how I learned about this.  Yeah, the Jasper in a smaller enclosure would not be a good thing.

Edit:  Here's a new story on the slim (http://www.geek.com/articles/games/xbox-360-slim-is-official-ships-to-retailers-today-20100614/).

Quote
Internal changes include: one large fan instead of two smaller ones, a 45nm chipset with integrated CPU and GPU, and integrated WiFi. These first two changes should lead to a system that runs significantly coolers [sic] and quieter.

My slim is still going like a champ.  Granted it hasn't seen much use in the past few years since I bought my PS3, and has since been delegated to living room status, but I turned it on the other day and it's running as it should.

Nintendo is on. Started off showing a new Wii Zelda, but had issues playing it live. Might do better not playing it on a huge projector on a giant stage, you know? We'll see. Then a Mario Sports Mix which has basketball, volleyball, and hockey. A mario party-ish game with Miis...snore. A new Golden Sun game for DS. And now a Goldeneye remake....with Daniel Craig?

Epic Mickey. And apparently it looks really awesome.

Kirby! And it also apparently looks awesome. I read it described as Paper Mario but Cloth Kirby.

Metroid: Other M coming end of August.

Nintendo is kicking ass and they havent even shown the new system yet.

New Donkey Kong Country. Holy shit, Nintendo saved up everything for this year.

Here comes the 3DS...which appears to be the actual name. haha, a slider to adjust the 3D depth. 2 outward facing cameras to take 3D photos! Motion sensor & gyroscope, improved graphics. Backwards compatible with DS.

First game shown? Kid Icarus. I think Nintendo just won E3. People saying it looks as good as a Wii game. On a handheld.

Nintendogs and cats. Layton, Kingdom Hearts, Saints Row, DJ Hero, Madden, Reisdent Evil, Street Fighter, Assasins Creed, Metal Gear Solid all coming to 3DS...holy fuck.

Sony has to follow this? I feel sorry for them now.

No price or date set, sadly. Probably waiting to see if Sonly whips out a PSP2.

And now a bunch of hot booth babes with 3DS units chained to their waists are walking into the audience to give demos. My god...

I think thats it. Pretty impressive showing. I just got a kick out of people commenting on "Oh, so just rehashed titles. How about something new, Nintendo?" as if MS showing CoD, Halo, and a new Gears game plus a bunch of Wii knockoff games for their new motion controller was somehow totally innovative and refreshing.

Sony is starting up.

3D! Its the future! As long as you buy a new HDTV and wear some special expensive glasses. Yeah. Showing Killzone 3 in 3D. Oh and it has Move support, of course. Yippie, I guess. Bunch more 3D games talked about. a Sly Cooper collection, GT5, Shawn White Skateboarding, etc.

PS2 is still the second most played console. Well....duh. Everyone has one and a shitload of games. Remember when the PS3 could play those, too? Wouldn't it be nice if it still did?

Here comes Move. Guess they are pushing precision with it.

Sorcery, third person action spell casting game being shown. People comparing it to Harry Potter. You cast spells by moving your hands around. Hey, at least its not sports.

Oh wait, here comes sports... Tiger Woods Golf! haha, best twitter comment: "The 1:1 tracking with the Move is useful for signing the divorce papers in Tiger Woods '11"

Heroes on the Move featuring Sony Heroes, Ratchet, Clank, Jack, Sly and more. All in one game.

Coca Cola teamed up with Sony for...something. I'm confused. Oh, advertising. Guess Coke is going to help promote Move. Okayyy...

Kevin Butler just gave a funny gaming speech that I'm sure will be transcribed and on youtube in a little bit. Funny but...Sony, games plz.

Move aint cheap.
$99.99 - starter kit for first player
$49.99 - Second controller
$29.99 - Second nunchuck

$179.97 for two players to be fully Move-equipped. Though you need to add another $30 for the other nunchuck for player 1! $210 for 2 players.

Aww man, I was about to write it off until they mentioned Time Crisis...

Oh hey, did you hear Sony makes this thing called a PSP? Showing a new God of War game for it. And Invisimals. I think that was the game that needed the PSP camera. Are they finally going to release that here? 70 new PSP games by December. Gravity Crash portable...that could be cool. Patapon 3!

Heh, Sony recreated their E3 booth in Playstation Home. Thats kind of cool.

LittleBigPlanet 2! You know, this would have been really amazing if they hadn't announced it a couple weeks ago.

Playstation Plus announced. Current PSN stays free, but here comes the premium subscription side. $50 a year gets you special demo and beta access, free games, auto downloads, etc.

Medal of Honor. Now with unlockable beards! Limited Edition with copy of remastered MOH:Frontline exclusive for PS3.

Dead Space 2 being shown, a continuation of the demo showed yesterday. Limited edition Dead Space 2 exclusive to Playstation 3 with Dead Space Extraction.

Gabe Newell? So Valve actually gives a shit about PS3 now? Uh...Steamcloud on PS3? WTF. Showinf off Portal 2. Looks like you can earn Steam achievements and use Steamcloud in the PS3 version. Wonder if the saves work cross-platform.

Final Fantasy XIV, the MMO.

God damn this is a long conference.

Gran Turismo 5 looking good. Holy shit a release date! Nov 2nd...of this year!

Infamous 2

Damn, Sony stepped it up. Twisted Metal!

Ok, shows over...finally. That was like 2 hours long.

The extras that come with the PS3 plus or whatever are only active as long as you're actively subscribed.  Meaning if you subscribe and download Wipeout HD, once your subscription lapses it goes away.

So...what's the reason to pay?  a week or to access to betas?

Meh.

I bought a PS2 slim for myself, and once one for my cousin's kid, and both had hardware issues. Maybe it was bad luck, but I read it had a higher fail rate than its fatter brother.

Cobra, what you've posted is pretty promising. Had my falcon crashed now instead of last year, I would have been able to get the new 360. Still, not a huge loss. My brother likes how the new 360 looks, but it just looks weird to me.

The strangest thing is how it looks so different from the fatter 360. The PS3 slim looks different enough, but can still be identified as a sleeker version of the fatter PS3. This slim 360 just looks very different, at least to me.

Of course Gabe cares. Gabe's trying to have Steam TAKE OVER THE WORLD. :P

Steam support for PS3 = BIG DEAL. Could you imagine if say PC, Mac and PS3 versions of say the same game support X-Play over Steam?  :o

That'd be freaking amazing...and a big punch in Microsoft's face w/ the horrible execution of X-Play with XBLive/G4WL w/ the few games that actually support it (Shadowrun and Lost Planet: Colonies Edition are two I can think of that support it.).

I'm not really impressed either. There's so much potential for a non-strategy game with Warhammer, but that just makes the task of making one of these games that much more daunting. For as big as the universe is, it really wouldn't make a good MMO because of how the games work. Characters that the average person would actually want to play as are literally one in a billion and you just can't be true to the source material and expect to have enough customers willing to pay monthly fees to play. It also doesn't help that DOW2 looks better, even zoomed in so that characters are the same scale.

What really needs to happen is someone needs to man up and make an Inquisitor RPG in the vein of Knights of the Old Republic or Dragon Age. That's were the role playing meat of 40K is.

If you check out that Crysis 2 video, it looks pretty standard, until that building starts to collapse. That is all done in the game engine real time, and isn't some background animation. The meches are hella cool too. The crazy thing is the level of detail being shown, and it is on the XBOX 360! Insane.

As for the 3DS, I am pretty excited because I have held off buying a DS for the past three years because I've been waiting for the next gen. of the thing. Pretty happy about this now.

Regarding PSN having a subscription thingee, I am not surprised as we had been hearing rumors about it for the better part of the year.

edit:

That Marvel vs Capcom 3 vid had me very excited!

Also, while it is nice that Valve is bringing Portal 2 to PS3, it is extremely disappointing that that was that their big reveal. Where the hell is HL2 Ep3? Unless you release these expansions on time, people will STOP caring.
Title: Re: E3 2010 Thread
Post by: idolminds on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, 01:00:00 AM
The building collapse is cool in a tech demo way, but the actual gameplay didn't look interesting at all. While its in-engine, I would guess that its a completely scripted collapse, much like the "cinematic physics" in HL2. Run simulation and record motions, then just run that back as an animation in-game. Looks very impressive but it doesn't actually have to calculate anything, its just a really complex animation.

Heres something I was wondering about the Valve/PS3 announcement. I got this right from the Valve news page:
Quote
On the PlayStation 3 Portal 2 will be supported by Steamworks, a complete suite of game features and services including auto updates, community features, downloadable content, and more.
Auto updates? Does this mean Valve gets to bypass certification for game updates? I wouldn't think so, and if not then how is it any different from regular game updates the PS3 already handles? Same question with the downloadable content. I find it weird that Sony would allow such a system that could bypass the PSN store.

It just doesn't seem like it all fits together...

3ds?  Awesome

360 slim?  Seems like a bad idea.  Don't smaller form factors usually have more problems with heat dispersion?  Why fuck around?

Regarding the building collapse, I was under the impression that you could initiate such sequences yourself, with destructible environments, and could destroy any building structure in the game?

I do agree that the rest of the gameplay looks pretty standard but I was under the impression that the building collapse was part of the gameplay and an aspect of their whole urban jungle thing?

Regarding steamworks on PSN, I am sure it will be the same as the autoupdates for any game on the PS3, but with a steamworks skin or something. I don't think there will be any bypassing.

Did you read the stories I linked?  They're going to 45nm chips and integrated CPU/GPU.  The slim reportedly also has an internal PSU, which is a clear indication to me that it sucks way less power.  I'm sure part of it also is keeping up with the Joneses, or Sonys.

Maybe you're right, but it just doesn't seem possible that they could allow you to destroy just any random building in the game you felt like. Could I go god mode and weapon cheats and just take down every building in the city? If so then thats way more impressive than I thought, but it seems extremely unlikely.

Automatic content downloads and updates
PS3 will automatically download and install designated game demos and game updates and also download the system software update data*6. PS3 will automatically start up at a designated time to download content and will turn off after the download has completed.
Since its launch in November 2006, PlayStation Network continues to gain strong support from users around the world. It offers a broad range of on-line content and services, including on-line gaming, video chat and text messaging with other PS3 users on-line, as well as access to many games, videos and comic content downloadable from PlayStation Store.
Tailored to enhance the experience for PlayStation users, PlayStation Plus will further enrich the PlayStation Network gaming experience.
SCE, with its strong lineup of entertainment content and services on PlayStation Network, will deploy various measures to provide entertainment experience to PlayStation users, and further expand PlayStation platforms.

*1 PlayStation users can purchase PlayStation Plus membership through PlayStation Store on PS3 only. Users need to install PS3 system software version 3.40, which will be released on June 22nd, to enjoy PlayStation Plus.
*2 Content will vary by region.
*3 Expiration date will vary by content.
*4 Users will continue to enjoy games with previously saved data. Any trophies earned during the trial will also be unlocked.
*5 “minis” are not available in Japan.
*6 As the install requires users agreement, it will not be installed automatically.
For $50 a year it could be worth it for the monthly "free" games depending on what they are, and if the discounts on purchases are good. I don't like that "early access to demos" and crap. Thats just locking things away for profit. If the demo is ready for the public, let the public have it. Its not early access, its delayed access.

*EDIT*

They totally need to rerelease Picross 3D on the 3DS. Work on the bottom touchscreen, but have an actual 3D view on the top.

Some thoughts on trailers I watched this morning:

Metroid Other M: Looks pretty good.
Zelda: It looks...Zelda. Which is good.
Kid Icarus: Doesn't looks like something I want.
Epic Mickey: Also doesn't seem like something I want. Not to say these games looked bad, just not for me.
Twisted Metal: Didn't see the whole gameplay segment, but from what I saw...is it me or does the car handling look really slippery? Like you're driving on a sheet of ice. I know the original TM games had similar handling but I figured that was due to PSX limitations and not done on purpose. Don't know how I feel about it being that way.

More bad news for Kinect (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/109/1099085p1.html)
Quote
Standing Room Only
Right now, Kinect only works when you stand. This includes menu navigation. All the cool options to grab a slider and advance through frames of a movie you are watching only work when you are on your feet. Kinect, we've been told, has problems handling your skeletal frame while sitting. The voice commands still work, but every game we've seen and even simple menu navigation have to be done with you out of your seat. That's not exactly how I want to watch my movies. If the focus for Kinect is creating games like Dance Central that naturally would require you to be off your couch, that's great. But I have to say, no one thinks "I am driving a car!" while standing up in their living room.

Rage is being shown on G4TV w/ Tim Willits. Looks awesome.

There's a RC car you can use, which has C4 strapped to it.

EDIT:
Id says the PC version WILL ship with the same SDK the dev's use.

Awesome! It might take a lot of work to mod the game so we wont see as many total conversions, but having the tool for people to use means we'll still see something.

Yeah, that was pretty awesome.

Also, in Rage, there are different factions - each w/ their own fighting style.

One Faction was pretty much w/ masters of acrobatics in an underground sewer-like environment - so, they use the environment to cartwheel, flip, spin around, vault around, hang on pipes, flip from pipes to pipe, etc - just to try to attack you, whether it be melee or guns. Looked very parkour-inspired.

I'm impressed. And they were showing the 360 version - and damn, does that look gorgeous, running at 60 FPS. I can't imagine how much the PC version will make me drool.

Oh, also - NO LOAD SCREENS!!! :)

Wo0t @ my Tweet on Rage just wound-up on G4TV. :)

Quote
MysterD @xplay With an open-world environment, Rage could be the evolution we've been waiting for from Id Software since the original Doom. #E3onG4

EDIT:
True Crime (Reboot) is being shown-off on G4TV for PC, PS3, and X360.

They showed off a mission where the guy is basically running after a guy throughout a market and scaling walls, fences, climbed ladders. There was also some hand-to-hand combat w/ enemies - kicks, punches, leg-breaking kicks, knee-breaking kicks, sweep kicks  picking up enemy and tossing him into garbage can, etc. There was a boss fight w/ the guy and his goons w/ more of this combat - even throwing a guy off a roof.

EDIT 2:
Gears 3 being shown off on G4TV w/ Cliffy B.

EDIT 3:
Dead Space 2 shown off on G4TV.

EDIT 4:
PCG's preview on Kane & Lynch 2 states that that this K&L game has ditched G4WL.
Instead it will support Steamworks. (http://www.pcgamer.com/?p=2757Bonus%3A)

EDIT 5:
AC: Brotherhood shown off on G4TV. Cannons looks sweet.

Konami was on a roll announcing the new Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid games along with showing more of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and then they had to go and announce a 360 exclusive Castlevania titled Harmony of Despair.  Fuck you Konami.  What is the fucking point in making a 2D Castlevania title a 360 exclusive?  Games like that already have a niche audience, wouldn't putting it on PS3 as well benefit you more?  Assholes.

Can't use Natal unless you are standing? That's pretty much a deal breaker for a core gamer. That takes it into casual territory.

The point is that you can imagine your non-gamer family and friends doing that for a few hours a secession with something like kinect sports, but could you imagine spending four hours a day playing Gears of War standing tall?

I am not saying they marketed it to the mainstream crowd because of this, and I am sure that's where they would have marketed it regardless (after the success of the Wii), but in the end, they have little choice.

I mean I wouldn't mind using it from time to time for a few hours a week for the more mass market games. But yea, there is no way in hell this can replace a regular controller now.

Also, the price suddenly seems very high.

I complained to him that all of Kinect’s other software is uninspiring, but noted that Eden alone would make it worth my money.

Mielke [James Mielke, one of the game’s producers] nodded. “Lots of people were saying that — except, you don’t even need Kinect to play it.”

I feel the same way about Wii (and all motion controls). Apparently the new badass looking Donkey Kong Country game uses waggle similar to how NSMB Wii does (shake the controller to spin the propeller hat!). Was it that hard to bind one more action to a button?

That's exactly my line of thought.  At least Microsoft doesn't make the majority of Xbox games.  Nintendo dominates Wii software production, and they push waggle and other hardware gimmicks mercilessly.  That's the kind of shit I don't want to see on the Xbox at all.  At least the Wiimote works well from a chair.  Not to mention that the Wii *has* controllers.  This business of waving around in the ether, in lieu of tangible movement hardware, has yet to prove itself to anyone, especially me.

Look at some of the links I've provided or check any of the big online gaming sites - a lot went on and was shown off. Go check some stuff out. :)

EDIT:
From the IGN vid on Fallout: New Vegas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28EFHmQedPo&playnext_from=TL&videos=svF6pI0WCZY&feature=sub), they show-off that you can pickpocket people's pockets - hopefully undetected, if you have a high pickpocket, sneaking, and explosives skill - and then drop a C4 explosive into their pocket. Then, you can go wherenever, take your detonator, and then set it off. LOL.

The ones that stood out from the rest:

Rage
Bulletstorm
Dead Space 2
Brink (didn't really see anything new from this, but I still really want it)

And other ones I'm looking forward to, or was impressed by:

Gears of War 3 (pridictable, but still looked nice)
Twisted Metal (wish I had a PS3)
Rayman
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Donkey Kong Country

Nothing impressed me as much as Rage though. Altogether I've seen that walkthrough about a dozen times. 2-3 times each from 4-5 different sites. I can't wait for that game to come out.

Rage and Witcher 2 - they both blew my mind.

Yeah, I think Rage looks amazing. No doubt in my mind, Rage looks it is shaping-up to be the best thing we've seen from Id - especially on the SP front - in years. I wonder what they're going to do w/ the MP portion of it, since they are not speaking on the MP yet...
When I saw Rage, I just couldn't believe how great-looking that game technically was - and that was the X360 version they were showing off...  :o
Oh, them Ghost Clan faction enemies are bad-ass w/ their acrobatics, using the environment and all to move around - hehe.
Some of the characters and environments look like they have more personality to them than what we've ever seen before from Id.

Overall, in general, I was impressed for the most part w/ what was shown-off for games at E3 2010.

The Fable 3 stuff IGN and Gamespot shown was a lot better than what G4 showed-off.

Hehe...you know Molyneux.

That's not what sold me on it.

I like the whole idea of everything - skills, weapons, equipment, etc - is upgradable and can even level-up (as you use it in action).

The whole thing of doing quests and being able overthrow the tyrannical king (who is your brother) sounds good, once you get enough followers to support your cause - and then, that's the 1/2 way point (who knows how long/short the game is). Then, 2nd half of the game - you're in control of the kingdom and do what you want - to take care/ruin the kingdom.

It sounds as if he's taking some of the great stuff of Fable series and Black & White 2 - and kinda merging them together.

I gotta admit - being able to marry a Co-Op player online sounds...odd...hehe.

From good speculation to reality:

The real Valhalla CPU/GPU/eDRAM (on one chip)  Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/show/3774/welcome-to-valhalla-inside-the-new-250gb-xbox-360-slim/1) got a system from E3 that they were allowed to get into.  As they said, 45 nm is the magic number.  Looking good.

Here's what you'll need to use the Kinect sensor:

I don't have that kind of space either.  I *sit* 2 feet away from a 23" screen to play games.  That isn't going to change for any reason, because I like it this way.  If I got showered with wealth tomorrow, I'd simply get much better furniture, surroundings and equipment to *sit* playing 2 feet away from a 23-26" display.
Title: Re: E3 2010 Thread

Ideally, you're supposed to sit approx. 2m away from a 32" TV (and larger), according to health recommendations. That's the "ideal" setup anyway. We don't always have the luxury of space so we compensate as well as we can.

Regardless of the ideal setup, wouldn't Kinect mainly be for people who want to flail about in front of their TV, like the Wii crowd, who would require that kind of space anyway?

Btw, just for the record I sit about 1m from a 32" TV which I'm using as my monitor (at 1080p) and by God all your words look glorious! Every post on OW is like a headline to me now! Even the MyD's posts seem more significant!

360 slim overheating

Title: Re: E3 2010 Thread
Post by: Cobra951 on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 03:02:31 PM
It's supposed to shut down when it overheats.  I don't know what I'm looking at here other than display issues.  The uploader didn't say how he knows it's overheating.  Not saying there isn't a problem.  I'm saying I don't know what is causing it.

Edit:  The only intelligent comment to that video so far:

Quote
This video shows no indication whatsoever that this 360 "overheated." Juxtaposing said 360 and a t.v. together with the headline "NEW SLIM XBOX 360 OVERHEATING! CHECK IT OUT!" does not mean people should infer that it did just that. The bands of lines running down the screen could be due to a variety of faults, and yes maybe it is because of the 360, or maybe the game, or the t.v. its self. Evidently, the GPU/CPU chip IS a good idea because it's 1 45nm instead of 2 90nm ones which = less heat.

Yeah, the Wii has that loophole where a flick of the wrist can sub for a swing of the arm. When the devices get more accurate (as depicted in the Kinect and PS3 Move) they will demand a more precise range of movement. Imagine when they'll actually be able to differentiate between currently indistinguishable movements e.g. swing and big swing or stab and lunge.

I'd only ever consider these things if I had the space anyway, especially when you think about unique accessories like WiiFit or the good ol' Dance Dance Revolution mats.

About the X360 Slim, that vid doesn't really give much info beyond screen artifacts and a child present at a CoD game. I kinda wanna have faith in the new Xbox. Time will tell.

But the 3DS is – seriously – the coolest hardware I’ve ever seen at E3… It’s nothing short of magical, both in the effect the stereoscopic stuff had on me and in the way the tech works. Not that I really understand how it works – not yet anyway! The 3DS was – dare I say it? – almost Disney-like in the magical feeling it evoked in me and I suspect you’ll have a similar reaction when you get your hands on it. And note that I said “when,” not “if.” That was no accident. Trust me – you’re gonna want and you’re gonna get a Nintendo 3DS.

Warren Spector (http://junctionpoint.wordpress.com/)

Damn.  That impressive, really?  I have paid no attention to the 3DS at all so far.  I'm going to have to look into the tech at least.

Edit:  OK, from what I'm reading, the 3D screen appears to be lenticular (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_lens), or what I called "prismatic" when I speculated about 3D without glasses around here somewhere.  (I didn't know "lenticular" then.)  Frankly, I don't see how else it could work.  I think it's far from ideal, and certainly would not work on TV screens.  It works on a handheld because you can adjust the position easily, and only you are watching it.

Edit 2:
If it's not real 3D (i.e., if it's an illusion) then it has to deliver a separate perspective into each eye.  If you don't need glasses, then the trick has to be accomplished some other way.  Prismatic screen?  Hell, I don't know.  It seems like magic at this point.  I'd love to see them pull it off, however it's done.

Yay for working search.
