Summary:
- Game will take place on islands, not one landmass
- Hero has a memory this time and is grumpy about the situation
- There are companions
- One companion is a woman who practices voodoo magic and saves the hero w/ a voodoo doll and a lit match
- Improved graphics engine

Ok, it's finally starting to set itself apart. So far it doesn't look like another Gothic clone.

Well, I think Risen kind of is an unofficial expansion/sequel to Gothic 3, anyways. There's enough hints in Risen there to make me wonder if Risen really was that Gothic 3 expansion they were working on BEFORE the plug on that got pulled by JoWood b/c of how poorly received G3 was (namely b/c it was in an Alpha State, upon release).
I think PB removed all the names of characters and left some of the characters having titles (instead of names) purposely and turned that into Risen 1.
Back to Risen 2 - yeah, it looks like it's really trying to go into another direction. Namely, all the awesome pirate-y side-quest stuff in Risen 1 looks like it's being MAJOR expanded on in this sequel....and then some.
I can't wait for more info on Risen 2.

Risen 2: Dark Waters DLC offered as pre-order bonus

Investment is a tricky topic to grasp for pirates, who simply bury their financial reserves in chests, and who often only have one hand. You, however, may be able to grapple with this--if you pre-order piratical RPG sequel Risen 2: Dark Waters, you get a DLC pack for free. That's a $10 saving if you like the game once it's launched and would buy the DLC, but what if you don't? Maybe pirates are wise to avoid such quandaries.
The booty on offer is the 'Treasure Isle' downloadable content, which is said to continue a plot point from the original Risen as you gallivant off to discover Captain Steelbeard's treasure with his daughter, Patty.
It'll let give you "an unknown island that offers new environments to explore with many puzzles to solve, treasures to loot and mysteries to unravel." Plus an exclusive item giving a permanent stat point boost, for the min-maxer in you.
Developed by Piranha Bytes and published by Deep Silver, Risen 2: Dark Waters is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 24. You have until then to solve this little investment puzzler.

Cool stuff worth noting:
You can train a parrot and have them distract and attack enemies.
You can train monkeys to do thievery skills to loot things AND you [the player] can take full control of the monkey.
Game also has Voodoo magic/skills you can learn to manipulate other NPC's; make enemies fight other enemies; take control of other NPC's to try get new dialogue options w/ other NPC's; etc.
Patti [from Risen 1] will return.

I must be on a freakin' roll w/ winning games in contest or something....
I won Risen 2: Dark Waters in a contest from GameFront...
-
I've got a few 2-3 hours so far w/ Risen 2. I've liked what I've played w/ the game itself so far - questing, story, Inventory design, pirate theme, atmosphere, etc.
But, there's just one thing right now more so than anything keeping me from loving it...
[*DRUMROLL*]
COMBAT! Ugh....I either just need to get used to it or something....or it needs more tweaking/fixing...It's just...CLUNKY.
Even more so even than Risen 1.
Unless Risen 1, the camera here is fully unlocked in Risen 2 - it doesn't always stay locked behind your character's shoulders.
There is NO KEY here to hit Reset Cam [behind player's shoulders].
Haven't games w/ unlocked cams learned this from the original Silent Hill 1 on the original PSX yet that it's a good idea to have a Cam Reset key? It's baffling! :o
If you press to move in a direction, the character TURNS that way, NOT strafe!
On one hand, this is good if you are trying to swing from enemy to enemy much more freely, though.
But, to STRAFE left and right, you need to HOLD the Secondary Command [Parry command] and hit the proper directional key to move in that direction.
A PARRY Mode Toggle Key might've been a good idea here.
Even having more separate keys - some for STRAFE Left, STRAFE Right, TURN Left, TURN Right might've been a good idea, too.
Also, w/ ROLLING (Dodging), you have to double-tap the direction on the KB. Why don't we have a roll key to hit here so we can roll? Wouldn't that be easier?
-
I think there is a camera reset button.. If you're playing with the gamepad it's right-stick click.. Not sure what it is with mouse and KB.
The game also automatically switches the interface on-the-fly when it detects gamepad input or mouse+KB input.
-

Right-stick click does nothing here.
Not sure what it is with mouse and KB.
If there is one and you find out, let me know please! :D

I have to enable gamepad or disable it through the Gameplay Option Menu.

Are you sure? When I tried it if gamepad was enabled it in the options the game used the radial (or grid) item selection but as soon as I touched the mouse or KB it switched the interface to classic hotbar (and vice versa) without me having to go back into the options to change. Weird.

I'm sure. Maybe it's something new patch changed? I don't know. [shrug]
Maybe a bug? I don't know [shrug]
I've got over 10 hours w/ it in total now, according to Steam now.
Anyways, I've gotten used to the controls for combat...even though they're still not as good as I'd wish they'd be. Game's gotten better in the combat department, with a follower - namely, Patty been tagging along. And the game gets better as it goes along - giving you more skills and stuff at your disposal.
I don't like how QuickSave and Autosaves do NOT overwrite themselves. I got like 1 GB worth of saves in there! :o
Must keep playing....
So far, quite digging the game...
EDIT - June 5, 2012:
After 46 hours, I'm done with Risen 2. Yes, it was pretty good and I really liked it, after taking some time to get used to the combat. Getting through that hurdle was the major one, more so than anything. Hopefully, next time around, PB can try and make the combat less clunky [on the controls - i.e. lack of roll button] and make it more visceral somehow. It really does need an overhaul of some kind. Still, if you like PB's Gothic games and Risen 1, you'll probably like Risen 2. Just getting used to the combat will be the biggest hurdle for you. It ain't too much different from their other RPG's, in just about every other regard. They really nailed the pirate setting, though.
