The narrator is a cool idea, but I'd worry it'd get like this (http://www.220.ro/desene-animate/Family-Guy-Randy-Newman/O4pfCdxLrx/).

I think I recall from an interview with Greg Kasavin (who is working on this now as creative director) that the narrator is usually less chatty, but in the first videos they released, it was showing the beginning of the game, where it's sort of explaining things to you a lot.

Also I don't see it mentioned here, but Giant Bomb is supposed to be getting a lot of exclusive coverage o this game, thanks in part to their history with Kasavin. Also because of this, they won't be reviewing the game, since they'll be a little too close to the project.

GameSpot -> Interview w/ Greg Kasavin on exposition and the narrator in Bastion. (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6280807.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6280807)

Quote
Kasavin pointed to his current project, Bastion, as being guided by that approach to exposition. He said the team couldn't do story in a traditional sense with expensive pre-rendered cutscenes, so the narrative had to be conveyed through gameplay. To that end, the game features a narrator reacting to the game in real-time. The narrator never repeats a line, and he reacts to the player's actions, Kasavin said. Systemically, every weapon in the game introduces its own wrinkle of new gameplay.

hahah

My mistake was actually watching your link first, and then the videos D posted.

Who the heck thought the narrator was going to be a good idea? He sounds super creepy, like some sort of molester. Far too much.

haha Imagine if that was Kasavin's only contribution to this project so far. :P

edit:

Looks really cool though. I think the only way this can meet success on the PC is if it follows Torchlight's price model.

I bet having one narrator is cheaper than say paying all kinds of different voice-actors...

Yea it actually is a pretty nifty idea, as long as they keep it in check. As everyone pointed out, those videos are from the introductory bits of the game, so hopefully he isn't so annoying later.

If the narrator comes in here and there - basically to teach the player how to play in "Tutorials"; tell more story; explain what maybe two characters ore more in conversation are saying to each other (since maybe the company can't afford high-end voice-acting); and other important stuff - yeah, I think it'll work.

The narrator's gotta' be good if he is gonna talk a lot - b/c it's quite obviously, it looks like he's gonna be a very important character in the game.

Nice fail-safes and fall-backs would be to have subtitles appear on-screen when the narrator talks matching the narrator's audio AND also maybe a toggle option to turn off/on the narrator.

I think I recall actually hearing Kasavin say at some point that you won't hear the same line of dialog from the narrator twice in the same playthrough. So basically it sounds like, you do something for the first time and he's gonna tell you about it. So when you first start off, there's a lot of "first times", but once you get into it he'll be less present.

On the live show tonight they basically talked about the reception at PAX, and then showed their first prototype, which just had the basic gameplay but with scans from a D&D monster book for enemy placeholders. Then they showed some gameplay from a new area they havent' shown before.

As far as price, I'm pretty sure it's being targeted XBLA, PSN and PC. That means digital release type pricing, probably $10-15.

Yea it looks really good. I think it looks easily worth $20, assuming it has some depth to it.

And very glad that Kasavin is working on this.

I saw this tip posted because its not immediately noticeable:
Quote
When you pick one of the two options for upgrading a weapon, you can always go back into the forge and switch to the other option for each level of upgrade!

For instance, say you get a sword. You find the upgrade material and pay the 150 spacebucks to unlock the first of the three upgrades. Now you get to choose whether you're unlocking +1 damage or +10% to critical hit chance. So you pick +1 damage (duh) and you go on your merry way. However, you can always come back and toggle over to +10% to critical hit chance. You have unlocked both options! This is true at every level of upgrade for every weapon.

I tried out the, er, trial.  The combat gets real in a hurry.  It's really well done, except for the scrolling getting jerky way too often (which was an unexpected disappointment).  Games like this should never have a problem with that.  The narrator is not annoying at all, at least through the trial segment, which takes you from awakening to a sort of hub area.  If anything, the narrator adds interest to what's happening, and a fair bit of humor.

I will be getting this eventually, I'm sure.  I'm involved with something else at the moment, and I want to get a bit more feedback on Bastion.

Only negative review so far has been that annoying moron from Destructoid, whatever his name is.

I caved and bought it. Sigh. I wanted to wait for the PC version, I really did, but I just couldn't, and after an hour I have absolutely no regrets. Game is completely fucking awesome. If they give me even the slightest reason to buy it again on PC, I probably will.

Sweet. I'm sure my coming off of Bastion didn't help my comments towards Shadow Planet's soundtrack (or lack of one). The music throughout the game was fantastic; I found myself humming the weapon challenge song several times after playing the game.

Nice.  I found my favorite tracks (the girl singing and the boss tune) last week.  It will be nice to get the whole lovely OST optimally recorded and complete.

I keep chipping away at this game.  For some reason, I can't stick with it for long sittings.  It's more enjoyable in short stints--a level here and there.

It does say its coming to other services as well, though whether those also require Steam is yet to be seen.

Kick ass.

In other news, I picked up the soundtrack. It's colossal. No, seriously, it's really good stuff. It's like... if Firefly were a videogame. It's all up on youtube now, so just search it and try it out. If you think it's worth it, head over and pick it up. $15 + $2 shipping for a signed CD (http://supergiantgames.com/?p=985) which really isn't a bad deal at all, and $10 for the download version.

The music itself is great, but if you play the game, the sentimentality edges it up another few notches. I'm glad this game turned out so well and is doing as well as it is. Looking forward to the PC version.

Just finished it last night (one ending). Doing the New Game Plus playthrough now.

It is an awesome game. Definitely the most polished indie game I've ever seen (I'd give second prize to Super Meat Boy and third goes to Jamestown). The art, the visuals, the music, the gameplay, it all feels like Super Giant Games clearly gave it the TLC it requires and more.

It's very retro in its style and gameplay but with a crisp, high-definition look. I definitely recommend it.

GPW, that's a "Hell Yay" from me ;)

And NO DLC planned for Bastion. (http://www.themortonreport.com/entertainment/interview-supergiant-games-greg-kasavin-on-bastion-part-2/)

Quote
No, we have no plans to extend the game in that way. As I was saying before, we held nothing back. It's meant to be a complete story, so there are no obvious extensions. We of course intend to continue supporting the game and I guess you could call something like the Portal turrets DLC. We'll continue looking at things like that which we could do, but that's it.

I just discovered that the OST flac files are 24-bit.  That makes them superior to a standard audio CD, if you have 24-bit capable audio card or dedicated player.  For those who care.

Finished the story tonight.  There's a new game+ mode that's nifty.  From what I can tell there are 4 possible endings.

Pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger on this tonight.  Maybe.

I got distracted and totally didn't.  I still want to though and don't doubt at all that it'll be worth it.  I might hold off until I finish Twilight Princess though, as that's something I've been really meaning to get into and Bastion really isn't going anywhere.

Hah, I'm doing just the opposite.  I finished Bastion Saturday night and have been pushing into Twilight Princess.

I just got it last night.  Can't stop playing.  Lot of RPG elements and the combat is sweet.  The narration definitely makes the game 800 times more awesome.

Finished playthrough numero uno.  I started a new one on Story + mode.  Is there anything really worthwhile besides getting to keep your weapons/exp?  I figure I would try out some weird weapon combos and/or weapons I didn't use much (like the Carbine, flame thrower thing, hammer, bow, and a few others).

DLC! (http://supergiantgames.com/?p=1212)

Good news is its free on PC and only $1 on XBLA.

The Stranger’s Dream DLC includes:

· The Stranger’s Dream: a new fully narrated Who Knows Where sequence, bigger and more challenging than the others. You’ll gain a bit more insight into Rucks’ backstory as well as the history of Caelondia if you can survive this fight.

· Score Attack Mode: a challenging new way to play through the story! You start at level one with all Spirits and Idols unlocked. Your combat performance is rated for efficiency, and all areas are repeatable.

· No-Sweat Mode: for those who just want to experience the story of Bastion, this mode provides unlimited chances to carry on from where you left off if you’re defeated in battle.

The Steam and XBLA versions of the game will also contain new Leaderboards for the Stranger’s Dream and Score Attack Mode.

To access the Stranger’s Dream sequence as well as Score Attack Mode, you need to have finished the game at least once. The Stranger’s Dream sequence will be available early on in your New Game Plus or Score Attack play-through.

@kasavin Any word when Stranger's Dream DLC is coming to Bastion Non-Steam PC versions?

@kasavin
@MysterD We're working on it. Some parts of the process are outside of our control so I can't give an exact ETA though hopefully soon.

So, I've been meaning to play this since last summer, but then I got really busy. I finally just got it last week, and I have to say that this game is one of my favorites of last year. It's just plain awesome. Also bought the soundtrack. Amazing.

After playing this game on and off since I bought it late last year, I finished Bastion (PC) today.

What a great game; great soundtrack; and great storytelling & narration.

For those curious for my final decisions...
