Title: EA/Epic/People Can Fly release Duty Calls parody game
Post by: idolminds on Wednesday, February 02, 2011, 12:12:44 PM
Wait....what? (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/67364)

Note: They will release an 800MB parody game on PC as a promo for Bulletstorm, but not a demo for Bulletstorm itself.

haha yea I read about that earlier and it was pretty wtf.

In fact, it was so wtf that I am going to preorder this. Nothing like wtf marketing to convince me.

Apparently the parody game is really, really short. Like 5 minutes short. Just watch the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7r9RqWBdl8) instead of downloading nearly a gig.

I thought it was pretty funny.  "You have picked up a small, meaningless stick.  Congrats."

Certainly wouldn't have downloaded it, but I giggled.  The rank-ups were great.

I didn't find the rank ups so amusing later on, probably because I've never played a CoD game online.

But I've always wondered if they create an infinite number of fake ranks.

In MW2 it goes like this: Private, Private I, Private II, then Private First Class, Private First Class I, Private First Class II, etc.

It looks like Black Ops walked a dangerous line and changed it to Private I, Private II, and Private III, but I don't think that one backfired on them too much.

EDIT: The level cap in MW2 was 70 though, so that's still something like 34 unique names if you discount the numbered variations.

In the Army, E-1 and E-2 are both "Private", but they are abbreviated "PVT" and "PV2", respectively.  E-3 is "Private First Class" ("PFC").  However, there is no second PFC rank.  E-4 is either "Corporal" ("CPL") or "Specialist" ("SPC") depending on the path the person takes (Corporal indicates a minor leadership role).

The Marine ranking system is similar, but at the same time very different.  It is even less like what the COD games do.

Obviously, Infinity Ward and Treyarch take some liberties here.

Here is a site that lists all the U.S. military ranks:  http://www.militaryfactory.com/ranks/index.asp
