Title: An obscure gas joke I thought of.
Post by: bullshark on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, 12:19:25 AM
Charles, Boyle, and Avogadro walk into 0.987 atm...

I'm really proud of this one though I don't think it will get much reaction outside of a university physics department...

I recognize the names but I don't get the reference to that specific atmospheric pressure amount.

0.987atm equals 1bar.  Actually to be more accurate it's 0.98692atm = 1bar, close enough though maybe I should change it to the exact amount.  Yeah I should.

Yeah usually you'll see it represented the other way, 1atm = 1.01325bar.  So for those who don't want to look these guys up, they are all scientists who came up with equations pertaining to gases, pressures, etc and a bar is a unit of measurement for pressure.

So it reads:  Charles, Boyle, and Avogadro walk into a bar...

Which to me is hilarious and works on so many levels but maybe I'm an idiot?

RDRR

EDIT: That 's sort of an obscure response, so here's what I'm talking about (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=RDRR).

Shit that makes me feel old. I saw that episode when it aired, in 1990.

I completely forgot that atmospheric pressure units are referred to as bars.  I think its funny.

I actually thought it was pretty funny too, but I wasn't smart enough to get it without looking it up.

I used to take chemistry at a distant point in my history. I find this amusing!
