Title: Gmail's e-mail formatting is screwed up
Post by: Pugnate on Saturday, March 05, 2011, 10:40:16 AM
I love Gmail. I've switched all my work and personal accounts to it, and I think it is easily streets ahead of hotmail or yahoo.

One thing I have a love/hate relationship with is how mail is exchanged. They basically have it set so that it feels like you are chatting etc. The problem is that sometimes it gets really screwed up and you can't find jack.

It is hard to explain. I am sure someone who has a lot of conversations through gmail would probably know what I am speaking of.

Yeah, it sometimes gets annoying when you lose track. The worst part though id when the other party doesn't reply by clicking "reply" and starts a new thread/conversation.

I had a conversation on my gmail acct only once.  I was helping someone finish his submission for the Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts DLC contest.  His Xbox had RRoD'd (typical).  I only use gmail for registering on different places, keeping my real email separate.  I found it odd when I noticed the stream of emails "stacking".  I haven't seen that behavior elsewhere, and I'm not sure I like it.  I think I prefer a flat model with the newest on top.  It's easy enough to sort by sender if there gets to be too much clutter.

I know what you mean. I've had a few conversations through email recently, and I noticed that if I'm trying to go back and find one in the middle somewhere, it's difficult to find the right one.

Yeah, I hate it too.  I've gotten used to it, though, and at least on my phone the emails all come through normally, as individual messages rather than the stacked crap.

I wouldn't say I hate it but I definitely don't think it's all that great and it did take a while for me to get used to it.

Threaded messaging.  It seems to be the way things are going with both email and sms.  I think Windows Live! Mail does it now as well.  In either case, you can turn it off.  Settings ---> Conversation View ----> Off  Or something like that.  It might be hidden in a tab.

I like it, but it gets pretty confusing.

It was confusing when my SMS started acting like that (Windows Mobile) but I got used to it. Now the challenge is finding specific messages in a conversation thread. At least they keep all sms's from a contact together.

I'm getting used to Gmail's thread system but it gets confusing when it occasionally puts in offline Google Messenger messages from the same contact.

The one thing is that gmail is fast as hell and the mail search engine is fantastic. So yea... it does get confusing, but I love gmail.

I just use Thunderbird with Gmail via IMAP.

I tried that for a while but I found that Gmail performs best when you visit the site.

I'll still admit that of all my e-mail addresses Gmail also performs the best in any e-mail client software, including my Windows Mobile e-mail clients.

Well, like I said, you do have the option to turn it off in Gmail if you would like. I do actually miss messages from time to time but do overall like it.  Still, I realize that it's not for everyone.

But yeah, I agree on the inbox search....amazing.

Now, if only google could get their act together with a spell checker for Android.
