Title: Why I still love Doom

Doom 2 played using GZDoom (http://grafzahl.drdteam.org/) and the Doom 3 Weapons Mod (http://zdoom.org/wiki/index.php?title=Doom_3_Weapons_Mod). Its great to load up and just go on a killing spree. And I just love the blood on the walls after a big room of baddies.

Hahaha I just recently played some Doom 2 and did that level a couple of nights ago.  I'm going to have to check out those mods though, hopefully they work with the Doomsday graphical mods I have going on now.

Doomsday engine beats all, though I used to use Doom Legacy religiously.  Now I just play the game on my PSP, heh.

For all you Doom lovers,

John Romero was recently going through some of his old archives -- and he found some unreleased Doom MIDI music files and just decided to release them to the public.

Doom Archaeology

I've been doing some digging around in the original Doom development directory since I'm working on consolidating all my data in a sane arrangement. The Doom source that was released years ago wasn't the nice raw development directory otherwise you would have all seen the NeXTSTEP DoomEd source, Doom map source files, and what I have here: unreleased Doom MIDI files.

There's a reason these weren't released - they're not very good, at least not as great as the music we actually shipped with the game. Some of the songs are just repetitive riffs. All the songs are named unXX.mid where XX is a number.

Some of the standout tracks are:

opening: this was an idea for the original Doom title screen song.
un17: Would have actually fit in the game.
un30: I like it's funkiness. Reminds me of Wolfy.
un36: I hated this song. I assigned it to e3m6 originally and everytime I ran that level I just cringed. I eventually removed it.
un39: Would have been a cool intermission screen.
un52: A better version of this song was in the game.

I think a few of the songs are early versions of some that were in the game. So for any of your Bobby Prince fans out there, here's more of the man's work.

That's pretty cool.  Kind of fun to get something "new" for such an old game.

They are kind of neat to hear, but you can see why they were cut.

Oh, might as well post it here. Knee Deep in ZDoom (http://kdizd.drdteam.org/) is a remake of the first episode of Doom. Done in ZDoom so theres more detail, more scripting, new enemies...just lots of stuff. Its kind of neat to see and recognize the old areas, but its hard as hell and theres a lot of backtracking involved. Like...theres now 6 colored keys. Lots of hunting around for them and then trying to find the door again in the massive levels.

What's a good and easy to use Map Maker/SDK for the original Doom?

I've heard a lot of praise for Doom Builder (http://www.doombuilder.com/builder_info.php).
