Title: Big Official E3 2011 Thread of Information Spam
Post by: idolminds on Sunday, June 05, 2011, 08:36:47 PM
Instead of making individual threads for every little E3 thing I'll just spam it up in here. I'm sure we'll have individual threads for the important stuff, though.

Tomorrow morning Microsoft has their conference followed by EA and Ubisoft, and Sony will have their tomorrow night. Nintendo gets to show off their new system on Tuesday morning.

Should be good times.

MS conference just ended. Rather boring with a whole bunch of predictable stuff. New Halo, Forza, Fable, Gears. Halo 1 remake is coming. Everything has Kinect support.

Only interesting thing for me was the announcement of Minecraft for 360. I would think that requires an engine rewrite, so I wonder if we'll see that engine make its way to the PC version.

EAs conference just wrapped. No real surprises. Hey, Sims on Facebook! Dream come true, I know.

Some new Need For Speed game, oh and a new SSX for those that like that series.

Apparently it ended with a live demonstration of Battlefield 3 that people are going bananas over. Best looking game to date or something like that, and it comes out in October.

When is Need For Speed: Run coming?

EDIT:
Why is Mass Effect 3 ALSO supporting Kinect? :0

UbiSoft showed off Far Cry 3.
Gearbox's Randy Pitchford is talking about Brothers in Arms series and making a new WW2 game that is way over-the-top game.
That game is Brothers In Arms: Furious 4.

Apparently both Rayman and Driver looked good. Seems Ubisoft is having a good showing of games. The presenter is a tool, though.

New game from Gearbox is Inglourious Basterds in Arms, but not named that.

Agreed w/ all of that.

BIA: Furious 4...was that inspired by Inglorious Bastards (movie)?

EDIT:
Yeah, beat me to it - BIA: Furious 4 looks like the Inglorious Bastards Game.

The DRM for most of their games that have SP portions got scaled back a bit.

Basically, when you boot a game, it does an online DRM check.
If you lose your connection, you can still keep playing and whatnot.

I'm curious what they'll do w/ for DRM w/ Trackmania 2.

I think the most interesting thing w/ this was when they showed Ruin.
You could play that on the Vita, then roll right over to your PS3 and play on the big-screen.

EDIT:
A little tidbit on Ruin. (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/ruin-a-social-action-rpg-hybrid-to-ps-vita/)

I'm considering it too at that price-point.

My main concern is how much "hardcore gaming" will I do on-the-go? While I do use my PSP fairly regularly the majority of its use is for music and video. Aside from that I use it occasionally for casual games and minis. It's becoming rare for me to use for playing a "full" game.

A few things that were announced.

Sony is going to release the two God of War PSP games together on PS3 with updated graphics.

Atlus is going to publish King of Fighters XIII on 360/PS3 in October. I'm interested in that one. It looks good.

Nintendos conference starts in a few minutes. This one should be quite interesting. Sony showed off their new handheld but we already knew quite a lot about it. Here we have a new Nintendo system that we currently know very little about, just a bunch of rumors.

Exciting!

EDIT

They havent really announced anything yet, but apparently they have a live orchestra playing Zelda music as they are talking about Skyward Sword. Thats pretty boss.

EDIT
Links Awakening on VC. A free version of Zelda 4 Swords for DSiWare. Zelda Symphony tour.

Apparently its the 25th anniversary for Zelda so they are planning new Zelda stuff for all their platforms.

OOT soundtrack when you register OOT 3DS. The Symphony tour will also have a CD.

No real new IPs announced or anything, but a lot of the Nintendo stable. Mario 3D, Luigis Mansion 3DS, Star Fox, etc.

O-WiiU . . . Ee-OOOOh-Wu
O-WiiU . . . Ee-OOOOh-Wu

Fils-Aime sounds like a cheap commercial, doesn't he?

Edit:  I don't think so, idol.  The new console generates what you see on the controller, supposedly without latency.

What I saw of the controller impressed the hell out of me.

Edit 2:  Wow, definitely a new system.

Lego GTA?  (Lego City Stories)

I guess it remains to be seen, but Nintendo hasn't seemed interested in trying to compete with or mimic what other companies are doing since the N64.  They seem to just want to do their own thing.

My thoughts on the WiiU?

Anyone remember putting these in the Intellivision controler? Now you don't have to worry about losing or bending them. Either that or Nintnedo just remembered how well the DS has sold and thought putting side information on a second touch screen was the reason that a lot of good games came to it.

Yep, PoP:TFS works the just like AC2 and SC:C. I haven't tested yet but I believe HAWX2 has gone (or is going) that way as well.

I'm always pleased to see such despicable schemes failing and getting redacted. However it's still pretty crap that it doesn't stop some publishers from trying.

GameSpot -> The Witcher 2 - X360 Version. (http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6318347/e3-2011-the-witcher-2-xbox-360-preview-impressions)

Quote
But chances are you know about the extraordinary ways in which choice manifests itself in The Witcher 2. Your more pressing question may very well be: how does it look? The version we saw was a pre-alpha build, so it did not represent how the game will look at release. But our first reaction was: "Hey--this game looks really great on the Xbox 360."

CD Projekt is aiming for the equivalent of the PC version's medium settings on the Xbox 360, and while we noticed some animation hitches, screen tears, and a few frame rate dips, that's par for the course at this stage. The art design still shone through, and Gop was proud of how the art design was always their first concern with the visuals.

He stated that even Witcher 2 players enjoying the game on low settings are incredibly pleased with how the game looks.

The team's goal is to make sure that The Witcher 2 runs smoothly at at least 30 frames per second.

“You have this 800-pound, 10-billion-dollar gorilla in the room that is Zynga, and just like Apple, is not even mentioned in the same breath as the other three main competitors,” Mr. Johnson said.
You really think Zynga is in the same game development league as Sony, MS, or Nintendo? Really? REALLY? They make a lot of money, I'll grant them that but their actual games are...well, shit.

Ok, heres the best part:

An employee showed off new Electronic Arts games, using an Apple iPad 2 plugged into a large flat-screen television. As he played a first-person-shooter video game, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, it seemed as if the iPad was essentially the controller for the game. No expensive gaming console was necessary.
I really don't know what the author of the article was thinking. The cheapest iPad you can buy is $499, which was the price of a PS3 5 years ago. You could go buy a brand new PS3 and the latest Battlefield game and still have enough money left over to buy two more brand new $60 releases.

I see what he's getting at, but you're right.  It's not really the same thing at all.

I think in his mind he figured "It's a controller attached directly to the TV! No console required!" while completely neglecting the heavy cost of the iPad and its TV/HDMI connector. Also, I think it would be connected by wire, giving another edge to current consoles' wireless controllers.

I'm not convinced about the iPad as a major gaming platform, however casual games I can see working really well (as they already seem to be). I can't imagine the iPad would make a comfortable controller, especially since any touch-based controls will not have any tactile physical texture so I'll have to constantly keep my eyes on where I'm touching. Aside from that I don't think its battery power can handle extended gameplay with heavy graphics. Sure, you could just plug it in but you'd be tethered to both the TV and the power supply making it even more ridiculous. How to rectify that? Someone will inevitably suggest making a wireless controller for the iPad (or perhaps even using iPods as controllers) bringing us back to square 1, and maintaining the iPad's status as technically the most expensive gaming platform to date.
