So, what do the folks who already paid for it get? In-game credit?

Just logged in.  You get a hat called "Proof of Purchase" - I doubt there is anything else.

Q. How is a free account different than a premium account?

Premium accounts have a few extra features, including access to rare and cosmetic items through random item drops, the ability to store more items in your backpack, and more powerful trading and crafting abilities. Otherwise, the gameplay experience will be identical for both accounts.

Account comparison:

Free
Backpack: 50 slots
Items: Standard
Crafting: Limited blueprints Trading: Receive items only
Gifting: Can receive gifts

Premium Backpack: 300 slots (expandable up to 1000)
Items: Standard, Rare and Cosmetic
Crafting: All blueprints Trading: Full trading
Gifting: Can give and receive gifts
So there is some difference. You can turn your free account into a premium one by buying something in the in-game store.

Hahah so true.

There's a pretty big influx of new players.  The class distribution is whack.  The last game I was in had 5 spies, 4 snipers, 1 medic, and 2 soldiers.  Ugh.  Hopefully it evens out soon.

I am loving my spy right now.  Stab stab stab.  Everyone's so unsuspecting.   :-[

I decided to check the game out finally. Apparently I've owned it for a while, because I have the "proof of purchase" hat. I tried it, and I don't get it. It's a class based objective game. I don't understand the need for the crafting and inventory system on the main menu. Are all the items purely cosmetic? If so, why are they there?

The only thing that really stood out to me was the weapon switching system, which is just as terrible as it's always been in Valve games. Why must I scroll to a weapon and then click, instead of just scrolling to it like other games? Why must I press 2 for shotgun, then click to confirm my choice? In any other game I could just press 2 and shoot.

I agree w/ you.
And also, Deus Ex: Invisible War PC did this, too.

Under advanced settings for controls should be a fast switching option. Its off by default.

I looked but couldn't find it. I know there was at least a console command for it in HL2 (possible a menu option too), but I didn't feel like taking the time to find it. Though there were still issues in HL2. Ones that wouldn't be there in TF2 just because of only having a few weapons.

In HL2, I turned quick weapon switching on, and rebound the mouse wheel to forward = next weapon, and backward = previous weapon. The problem is, the weapons are grouped into categories. So scrolling forward would take your through the categories correctly, but when you switched into a new category, you'd hit the more powerful weapons first. So you'd go from the pistol category to the assault rifle category, and start on the big ass assault rifle thing, then move to the regular one, which seemed backwards. You'd land on the crossbow (effectively a sniper rifle) before the shotgun, because it was considered a higher powered weapon in the shotgun's category.

bleh, yea the weapon organization in Valve's games seems so messed up.

Yea, I didn't see the "Advanced" button at the bottom when looking at the options windows.

Looks like robots are coming to TF2 as the gray team. Cool how Valve has been teasing it.

Clearly Valve has way too much time on their hands. As do their fans.

I'm not bitter or anything...

I dunno, I guess its neat they would plan this and seed it for 2 years but...damn man. I don't have time to sift through clues and stuff like that. And ultimately to me these feel like those "Get 10,000 Likes on Facebook and we'll release a new trailer!" things, just with way more work involved for Valve and the fans to decode it. I will only care when we know what the update really is and when it comes out.

Other people seem to enjoy this stuff and following it so I guess Valve knows their audience. Its just not for me.

Ahhh I see what you mean. Yes, that clues stuff is really not for me either. That would take a lot of time from both fans and Valve.

I think its really cool, like a scavenger hunt sort of thing. The stuff they did with Portal was crazy and interesting.
