Title: Chalky Paint? Plaster? What gives?
Post by: sirean_syan on Saturday, November 18, 2006, 10:45:40 PM
So I'm starting to put stuff on the walls in my new place today and I noticed something pretty strange. Since I'm renting I generally prefer not to put holes in the walls. That requires the use of Command Hooks (http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Command/home/) and strips. I've been using these things for several years since Aimee introduced them to me and they're generally pretty awesome. Slightly expensive, but they've always held as well as screws in walls for me provided you don't overload them.

So, here's the problem. I put one up last night and the thing came off this morning and the sticky part seems like it had just lost it's sticky. I figured I messed up and didn't clean the wall, so I did. When I did that paint on the wall sorta became this chalky paste, so I quickly stopped and went to do a bigger test in a hidden spot. Again, when cleaner, alcohol, or water is on the wall it becomes this pasty mix, sorta like wet plaster.

Does that mean my new walls are just plaster? There's a noticible difference between the walls in the wet room (kitchen & bathroom) and the rest of the apartment. I've never delt with that before, but I guess it makes sense. Anyone else have experience with such walls? They sorta look and feel like just a dull porous paint and have that "rough" texture that's pretty popular in apartments around here (not super flat, several planes with random edges barely sticking out to break things up a little).

You know what? Screw it. I'm putting freaking nails in the wall. After reviewing the lease and a couple other things, I think I'll be fine... if not, I don't think we're moving for a very long time. So, whatever.

Most places don't care about small nail holes and if they do, its easy to fix with some plaster or wall compound you can buy for a few bucks for a small container.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much.  It rarely becomes an issue at most places.

Yeah, I'm just always iffy about that.

Still, this place is pretty old and it looks like they tend to redo a lot of stuff when people move out so there's probably no need for any concern. I don't think we intend to move for an extremely long time now so things are going to have to hold on the order of years. Plus, I just noticed while I was taking out the trash that another apartment had like a hundred pictures (family and stuff) all over the wall. If that person's cool, I'll be cool. Tomorrow, I hit up Home Depot and get some hanging kets. For joy.

On another, happier note, does anyone else feel like posters and pictures are almost more of a priority than other stuff when you move into a place? They're so unproductive time wise, but it makes the place feel that much more yours.

They're generally mid-range for me time wise.  I get the essentials done first, then start hanging stuff, then get the little things done.

I usually start hanging stuff last too.  I've got a TON of wallscrolls and posters.

Well, we pretty much got all the furniture in place now... actually, I think it's all there save for maybe a chair or two which are moving around constantly as step stools. Now we have to start openning boxes and putting that stuff away. Maybe we are in the mid-range are considering how you look at things.

Oh, tell me that's not the most bad ass corner in the existence of man. (http://savarian-syan.50megs.com/Apt/Oakland/Pre-Desk.JPG) That's just the beginning too.

Actually, if it isn't, don't tell me.

Actually that is a fucking sweet start. Man my office looks like a game room.. which isn't a good idea when I am entertaining clients, but screw them.
