Fallback options?
-
Yeah, that could work if we cant get .net back.
-
I take it no update from ant? When does .net become available again?
-
Dec. 30, I believe.
-
What happen with the domain? I was trying to get on here last week, but the URL had changed. I thought you guys might have just let it expire, and I got all bummed out. But I decided to do a search for "idolminds" the other day and found it.
May I suggest using a different domain as GoDaddy.com? as they are supporting that SOPA bullshit.
-
Ant currently has control of the domain and he let it lapse. We're waiting on him to re-up it, or failing that for it to become available and we'll just buy it up ourselves.
WOAH! Its up for auction now!
-
Also, GoDaddy recanted on the SOPA thing from what I understand. Though to be fair, I always thought they kind of sucked. I still don't like them.
-
I went ahead and registered and made a bid so we still have it for the time being.
-
It'd be kinda nice to keep the same domain if we could so without much trouble or expense. We've moved a lot over the years, but I like that we have stayed here for a while.
As always, let me know if $ is an issue.

GoDaddy are a bunch of douches..

Yes, we should move away from GoDaddy. They suck anyway and with the SOPA thing it just makes it worse.
-
Oh... should I have not bid then?
-
Since the .com name is parked, I think we would have had a good shot to register it when it went back to ICANN (available for sale to the public). I wouldn't have done the auction but I wouldn't say the fact that you did is A Bad Thing™.
If you win the auction, we can always transfer the domain away from GoDaddy to another registrar like eNom, Register.com, Network Solutions, Nettica, etc. after the cooling-off period. If the auction falls through somehow (never did an auction so I don't know what to expect) and the site goes back to ICANN, we can just buy it from one of the aforementioned registrars.
You know, I am really pretty annoyed that Antares has been such a failure in this regard. I always thought he was a stand-up guy. I understand that maybe he could care less, but like Cobra said he has to understand that there are people that care a lot and that at least some of these same people he knew pretty well. Why doesn't he just help us transfer the damn thing? He should have done it last time.

He seems to have gone through some pretty major life changes. I don't know what, but he's moved on from a lot of his old life, I gather.

Copyright Troll’s Domain Name Auctioned to Pay Legal Fees (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/12/righthaven-domain-auction/)
Righthaven, a copyright-troll law firm that failed in its attempt to make money for newspapers by suing people for sharing stories online, is having its domain name auctioned off to help satisfy the Las Vegas company’s debts.
As of 3 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Righthaven.com was going for $1,250, up from $100 when the online auction started on Dec. 26. The auction, which ends Jan. 6, is to intended to recoup $63,000 in legal fees Righthaven owes after it lost a case in which a federal judge said reposting an entire news article in an online forum was fair use — an issue Righthaven has appealed.
So.. You thinkin' what I'm thinkin'? :P

try 1&1 domains?
-
I went ahead and registered and made a bid so we still have it for the time being.
What was your bid? I see that the current bid is $12.00 and the auction ends today at around 1:00pm PST.
-
That was Pyro. Theres only been 1 bid in the auction.
-
Yea that was me, so no need to place anymore bids on it.
-
haha imagine if two people from OW unknowingly got involved in a bidding war.
-
Alright so I won the bid, but now I need to renew the domain. Do I have to renew through Godaddy or can I take it somewhere else (I'm totally new to this). When I go to my won auctions it says that the domain is ready for purchase, when I click to purchase it, it sets up a Godaddy renewal purchase for 1 year. Should we do that and than transfer it to somewhere else?
-
You probably have to renew through GoDaddy. You could call them if you wanted to explore other options. Again, we can always transfer the domain again after it is renewed (after the cooling-off period).
-
Yea I went ahead and purchased it with the renewal just to get it out of Ant's hands. So right now the domain status reads, "Expired domain ready on : 01/11/2012", so hopefully we should be back up and running by then.
