E3 is here...well, tomorrow. Sorta. The press conferences start tomorrow and then E3 proper on Tuesday. But Nintendo already had a sort of press conference (http://www.overwritten.net/forum/index.php?topic=8511.0) to get some Wii U details out. I think that was mostly because some developers are holding conferences before Nintendos and will most likely be talking about the Wii U a bit so it was best to get some of that out first.
Anyway, Microsoft, Sony, EA, and Ubisoft are set for tomorrow and Nintendos main set for Tuesday morning. Not really sure what to expect this year. Nintendo is going to talk a LOT about Wii U and will be showing off games. Will be interesting to see what they do for HD. C'mon, Pikmin 3! Both Sony and MS are big question marks. No one expects them to talk about next gen this year. I've heard rumors of Sony spicing up Playstation Plus and MS announcing a 360 tablet device, but who knows? EA will probably show Need For Speed Hot Pursuit...wait, didn't they already release that? Yes, but now they are letting Criterion (Burnout Paradise) make their own version. With the same name. Whatever, if its open world cops and robbers then Im interested. Ubisoft will probably have mimes or weird french acrobats or some shit at their show. They are crazy. And French.
EXCITING!
-
MS conference is ending. Ill find some links to the info soon...trying to parse crazy manic chat streams for info. It was...what you expect. New Halo, new Gears, new Forza, new Fable (wait, what?), new Call of Duty. They also showed the new Tomb Raider and Splinter Cell games. Internet Explorer coming to 360 4 years after everyone stopped caring, some Kinect fitness and dance stuff. You know, the usual.
Guess they have something called "Smart Glass" to use your tablets and smartphones with the 360? I need to see some more real info on that.
Some info on SmartGlass (http://www.shacknews.com/article/74116/xbox-smartglass-announced-to-utilize-mobile-devices)
-
EA is on now. Most of it is expected...blah blah sports, blah blah Battlefield, blah blah Medal of Honor (yes, another one). Wait, whats this? Need For Speed Most Wanted, made by Criterion? Open world cops and robbers Burnout Paradise? Sign me the fuck up.
And thats it, I guess. SimCity was shown, as well as SimCity Social for Facebook! Yeah! And some Madden for Facebook! SOCIAL! And then Crysis 3 I guess.
No Mirrors Edge 2. Fuck you EA.
But NFS sounds cool still.

I got G4TV on. UbiSoft Conference is happening right now.
They had Flo Rida do his "hit" song for Just Dance 4, since he's going to be a part of it...
Far Cry 3 looks pretty good. Hopefully, as big as the game sounds [they say there's 4 islands], the game is nowhere as redundant as Far Cry 2. Bad guy seems to curse a lot, hehe.
Splinter Cell: Black List. CG Trailer video, no gameplay footage. Ugh.
New Avengers game. CG footage, no gameplay footage.
NEW Rayman for Wii-U - being shown-off w/ in-game footage and people playing w/ the Wii-U Controller.
CG Trailer for a zombie apocalypse survival-horror game - reminds me of the Dead Island trailer everybody loved.
Zombi-U for WiiU only.
-
You forgot to mention the tits. Sure the TV stations streaming live loved that.
They also might have blown a big Nintendo reveal. I see people mention that Ubi said Fall 2012 release for their WiiU games.
-
You forgot to mention the tits. Sure the TV stations streaming live loved that.
LOL, oh, I bet...hehe. No censored box or anything here on G4 for the nudity, hehe.
They made sure they cut out the cursing, even though they had no problem w/ letting the blood and gore be shown.
Assassin's Creed 3 is up next...CG being shown. Now gameplay is being shown. Connor jumping from tree-to-tree via branches, walking on branching, leaping, etc. Connor battling animals in the wilderness. Connor riding a horse.
Shootmania is up. They're doing a 3 on 3 game.
Game w/ a new IP called Watch Dogs. About a CTOS (CenTral Operating System). There's this Big Brother type of thing going - where everything is recorded, stored as info, etc on the CTOS. Hackers are going to use this information against people as a weapon. Wow...a lot of cursing being censored here on G4TV. This hacker the player is, he just took out traffic lights in an intersection and a lot of cars hit each other - awesome!
-
Sounds like they have some sort of interesting GTA-ish game, but not GTA? Whatever, need to see a trailer of that based on everyones reaction to it so far. Sounds like Ubi is having the best show so far.
EDIT, yeah that. Sounds really cool.
Based on everyones reaction, I am so downloading the video for that one/

I didn't know what to make of it at first. I wasn't sure what it was. Is this an adventure game? Is this an open-world game? Seriously, some of those spying on other characters and finding out their history - looking like something out of that. And then, he used it to set-up a situation to get the person he was after.
I wonder what that kind of game would be like w/ an extra multi-player component... :-X
That game looks amazing. I need MORE on Watch Dogs. I can see why they closed w/ that, not AC3.
And, yeah - AC3 looked great....

Sony's Conference is about to start...
NEW IP from Quantic Dream called Beyond. Tells story of character named Jodie over 15 years - who has a connection w/ the living and the dead. Jodie is played Ellen Page.
So, in the opening scene - Jodie is basically silent. Also, is Jodie the new Alma or something? I see telekinesis, her blowing up helicopters, etc etc.
PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale for PS Vita and X-compatible w/ PS3. They showing off 2 players using PS3, 2 players using PS Vita. Battle as PS characters against other players.

Now showing off Wonderbook... [shaking my head]
Book of Secrets from JK Rowling announced... [shaking my head]

PlayStation Suite will be renamed to PlayStation Mobile.
God of War: Ascension w/ gameplay being shown-off.
-
If it has anything to do with Harry Potter and me attending school at a Virtual Hogwarts. I am totally in!
-
The Last of Us is up now - with gameplay footage.
-
So end of day -1 (E3 doesn't technically start until tomorrow), my interest list:
NFS: Hot Pursuit
Watch Dogs (though I have some questions about how "open" it really is)
Assassins Creed 3 (now with ship combat!)
The Last of Us
SimCity sounds interesting but the always online requirement will push me away. Still interested in XCOM but I didnt see much talk about today other than a misleading trailer that makes it look like an action game apparently. Borderlands 2 you guys know both why I want it and why I don't want it. Tomb Raider I need to know more about, I'm not totally sold. Zero mention of The Last Guardian has me pretty worried about its fate at this point.
So not a bad day overall. Tomorrow should be really interesting.
-
Okay, Watchdogs looks too good to be true.
-
Nintendo started. Showed Pikmin 3 right off the bat. I need to find that video.
New Super Mario Bros U. Its NSMB. For the U.
Batman Arkham City Armored Edition. Ok.
Wii U supports 2 of the screen controllers. It just drops each screen down to 30FPS.
Scribblenauts! Now with verbs!
Mass Effect 3 shown inside a montage.
Wii Fit U....yeah.
Paper Mario 3DS? I guess? Didnt see it.
Luigis Mansion Dark Moon for 3DS
Lego City Undercover. Open world Lego GTA?
Some sort of minigame collection called Nintendoland.
And nintendo themed Pacman Vs?
And its over. Guess they ended on the Nintendoland thing. How about that...

Man, I was not impressed with the Splinter Cell Blacklist video. It didn't look special at all. It actually looked like a sequel to Kill Switch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_Switch_(video_game)). Very "arcade" feel to it.
Rainbow Six Patriots, on the other hand, has me excited.

I still want the stealthy "hiding bodies" thing back...
Yeah, they took the gravity of stealth out of the game. It's not as severe or dire as it used to be; very dark, requiring precise movement.
The musical score may as well be the theme song for Team America: World Police.

That video doesn't work for some reason right now, but I think its one I saw posted somewhere else (can't remember now) based on the starting thumbnail image and it looked pretty neat. I will definitely be getting this when it hits PS3 and can't wait to jump back into that world again.
So far, this year's E3 surprised me a little more than I thought it would and I am looking forward to some of the games coming out next year now.

Tom takes on MOH: Warfighter and many of the modern military-shooter mechanics (regen health, respawns in MP, taking lots of bullets and surviving, etc etc).
Video - 22 minute confrontation of thoughts here on MOH:Warfighter and modern shooters b/t Greg Goodrich [Exec. Producer on MOH: Warfighter of Danger Close] and Tom McShea. (http://e3.gamespot.com/video/6381457/a-matter-of-authenticity)

The health regen article is kind of "why so serious?" but it does bring up a good point. Don't say you're aiming for realism and then do....all that stuff. Granted a game where getting shot once either kills you or takes you out of the battlefield wouldn't be very fun, the more gamey you make it the less realistic the game becomes. So...own up to that. You can have it "military themed" and still have the fun stuff, which is basically what these end up being. Just stop bullshitting.
Or bring back scifi shooters. Then you can hand wave away all that stuff easily.
EDIT
And I think more important is his point that it lets players play in a non-realistic way. That was one of the cool things about Red Orchestra is that you couldn't just run around, take a few hits, duck down to recover, and keep going. You could and usually did die to a single shot so you played carefully.

I think he [Greg] does own up to what isn't realistic by saying "It's a video game" [which usually ain't real] and mentions that those are "game mechanics". He does say what aspects of the game he's aiming to be real (narrative in SP mode, the type of guns, etc).
Though, I do find it kind of funny and ironic Tom admits to never have played MOH 2010 and that he has only seen the MOH:WF demo.
Though, it is cool that there is a planned "Hardcore MP" (sounds like it's No Respawn per round) for MOH:WF - even though it wasn't [unfortunately] shown at E3.

Granted, I haven't played Red Orchestra - but isn't that what makes this kind of game special for so many? That is it so different from the norm?
ARMA series and Red Orchestra series are loved by their hardcore fanbase b/c they are not the "typical" shooter saturating on the market. I could imagine if the "realistic shooter" was commonplace on the market and that there were tons of these "realistic shooter" clones, people would be bored with that genre - just like how many probably get tired of the COD-clone syndrome. I think since COD seems to do this COD-style game better than just about everybody else, I think that's why many gamers will go right back to COD or be pumped for the next COD game.
EDIT:
About sci-fi shooters - yes, I could go for a true-blue Unreal 3 or new UT game. It's been a while since the last ones.
