Title: Facebook and the U.S. election
Post by: scottws on Tuesday, November 06, 2012, 10:06:55 PM
I was on Facebook in 2008 and I don't remember it like this.  I guess most of my Facebook friends are staunch Republicans or most of the Democratic ones are quiet but my newsfeed is just exploding with doomsday scenarios right about now.

I've noticed that since I've been on facebook people love to post about whatever the fuck election is going on.  I'm getting a shit ton of "Obama!  Yeah!" in my feed right now.

Yeah, it's all democratic on my end. In fact, with complete exclusivity. I've not heard a peep from any conservatives I know.

I think the whole thing is a fucking sham and people just use this as an excuse to masturbate over their perceived power. As though one man could somehow fix the country. The only thing I'd find worth celebrating is if Americans showed any signs of realizing that their party politics will never do anything but fail them.

I'm getting 90% liberal and 10% republican.  All of my liberals are friends from college and beyond.  All of my republicans (with a few exceptions) are friends from high school.  Most of 'em never went to college.

I totally agree with this.

I've only got a few posts about the election, but then I keep my friends list pretty tight and most of the people I know don't give a shit about politics in the first place.

Yeah Trumps meltdown is pretty epic.

In other election news theres been some interesting developments in other areas. Weed is legal (straight up, not just medical) in a couple states, as well as gay marriage. So yeah, pretty cool.

It's been about the same on my end as in 2008, maybe a bit less. I've just been ignoring most of it.

What's he talking about regarding the popular vote?  CNN shows the results currently are 59.6 million for Obama and 57.0 for Romney.  I also wonder if he felt the same way in 2000.  Doubt it, since the Republicans won.

I wonder what is going to happen with the marijuana thing.  In the U.S., Federal law supersedes state law.

Comment I just saw on a status from one of my staunch Republican Facebook friends (a cousin's wife).  I don't know the commenter personally:

I am so disappointed.  The next 4 years will be very tough.  I pray we survive!
I don't think they are being facetious.  The woman's friends all appear to be very conservative as all the comments I've seen on her pro-Romney/anti-Obama statuses the last month or so have been all siding with her.

Before the Cali results were all in, Romney was ahead in the popular vote. Trump was writing that stuff before Cali was all in.

. . .

Obama won both ways.  But what I find funny is that a prominent republican would now be calling for the abolition of the electoral college.  Traditionally it has helped republicans, by preventing the more liberal East and West coasts, with their dense populations, from dominating the whole country.  Ohio, where I live, is a microcosm of the country, with popular percentages that mirror the nation as a whole.  And Ohio has often gone republican in the past.  It's national, and it's not a sham.

Having said that, I must admit I voted a straight republican ticket, not because I like those guys, but because I dislike them less than the current democrats.  That decision went down to the wire, as in I thought I wasn't going to vote at all as recently as last week.  Don't want any of these bozos in power.

The worst part of it all is that we still have a government as divided and ineffectual as the rest of the country.

Edit:
. . .

My mother is part of that crowd, sadly.  She's allowed a lot of fearmongering to rattle her for months, despite all my warnings to her about it.  I keep telling her that random emails and posts are mostly falsehoods, and cannot be taken as anything but noise without independent verification.  It doesn't help.  I gave up, and I simply avoid the subject with her as much as possible.

I can understand. I hate the fucker and think he's made some horrible choices, and now he has 4 more years to make more horrible choices. I also think Romney would have been a terrible president and had no desire to see him in office either. All my thoughts are anti-political in general. I can't stand any of these people and believe they're all self-serving jerks who will ride on and feed from this country until it ceases to exist.

I'm so glad that France approves of my president. Really means a lot coming from such a prestigious group.

It's amazing. People who don't vote or live in democratic communities will go out of their way to vote for Obama :P

Elections get more lame as I get older. Like, even foreign ones (especially foreign ones?)

Except Pakistan I guess? wtf
I'm guessing it is related to fallout from the bin Laden raid and drone strikes during Obama's tenure.
