Title: Joystiq shutting down
Post by: PyroMenace on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, 06:54:30 AM
So far it's rumored but it looks like it's going to happen. (http://kotaku.com/sources-aol-shutting-down-joystiq-1681996505)

A few years ago, they did something stupid to their page which prevents their images from displaying on Firefox here.  I've tried several ways to solve that, including a lot more script unblocking than usual.  Nope.  My guess is that it's tied to Adblock, and that I won't remove for them, although I did try to search for specific exceptions for Adblock to let their images through (with no success).  So I gave up, and haven't been to that site on a regular basis for years.  I won't miss them.  Still, it's a shame that they're being simply shut down instead of cut loose somehow.  Maybe it isn't practical.

I was a big, big fan of their weekly podcast back in the late-aughts.  I had a 30-40 minute commute to work so they made for some real good company.  I don't consume nearly as much gaming media as I used to, though.

I've read an article or two here or there in the past. But I consume almost no gaming media in English any more, and when I do, it isn't specific to any particular site other than GiantBomb. It's more or less been that way for me since Gamespot lost Kasavin. Joystiq is a venerable site, but I won't miss them.

I don't really care that much, but  I kinda wish it was Destructoid and Kotaku instead.

I'm with Que on this.  Greg Kasavin was the last truly good videogame journalist and as far as I'm concerned the entire industry aborted itself when he was fired.

I've heard of Joystiq, but never visited the site.

I believe you're mixing up Kasavin with Jeff Gerstmann.  Kasavin left on his own accord.

Yeah, Kas went to make videogames, Jeff got shitcanned and went to make his own site. I still agree with Scott's general assertion, though.

Yes, you're right.  I guess then a better description would be that the industry went on life support when Kasavin left and aborted itself when it fired Gertsmann.

What, you don't like how videogame coverage is all either reporting on fake controversy or caricatures spouting off with false indignation?

Kasavin's departure was huge blow for me.  He was probably the only reviewer I ever trusted 100%.  Real glad he got the opportunity to follow his dream, though.  That's really great for him.

Personally I never cared for Gerstmann, but I'm starting to warm to him a little bit.  If anything due to a lack of other viable options.

I didn't like Gerstmann much either.  But when he was fired, it was a clear sign that said the videogame news sites where just whores for the publishers and completely devoid of integrity.

I was not a fan of Jeff in the Gamespot days. He's really come into his own at GB, though.

Still miss Kas. His reviews were more like what we expect from well-loved movie critics and such. There was something both useful and pleasant in listening to his analysis. I actually considered what he thought to be important, even if not the last word. There's really been nobody to do that since.
