I like how they refer to it simply as "Internet" and not The Internet.

It's funny because I remember debating lots of things about the Internet with my dad long ago.  About its usefulness, how it might grow, what people were using it for.  It's pretty weird to look back at what it was and what it is now.  Not *so* different in some ways, but so much bigger, more mainstream, more functional, more... stupid.

In the last ten years or so, Internet has made good scholarship about ten times easier. Internet has also made bad scholarship about a hundred times easier over the same period. Internet giveth, Internet taketh away.

"For years they've been saying these things would change the world - would mature from adding machines and typewriters, to tools of the human spirit. Now, maybe it's coming true - because of Internet."

Just as I always suspected, the tools of the human spirit are used almost exclusively for sex.

Well humans crave to communicate (some linguists argue that humans exist to communicate), and sex is the epitome of communication and information exchange on several levels. Physical, biological, chemical, emotional, mental, verbal, and perhaps others; sex covers the spectrum.

Hehe it was a discussion in our class. Our linguistics professor said "bees make honey, birds sing, and humans communicate.." to which the guest speaker (every two weeks we had a guest speaker, usually profs from other universities) remarked "perhaps that is what they [humans] exist to do.." and that brought up the argument. My view was that as humans we're too complex for that to be our purpose, though communication (in all its forms) is one of our primary functions. We even figure out new ways to communicate when the traditional modes are unavailable.

I loved linguistics, except the stupid seminars.. I hate seminars! The entire linguistics class was literally 180 women and 3 guys (including myself). So my seminar was 19 girls and moi.. I don't know if it was a superiority complex but the girls always picked on me, anything I said was considered invalid.. So it eventually became me versus 19 girls.. I actually lost marks for "not being presentable enough" coz I came in wearing jeans and a denim jacket once. Granted I was giving a presentation that day, but my appearance should be irrelevant to my grade.

So, sex can play quite a role in all forms of communication, even if its subconscious. All hail the Internet!
