This game take place b/t the events of BG1: EE + BG2: EE.

I'm guessing BG1:EE + BG2:EE didn't sell as well as they hoped.

So, they are trying to get people who probably own BG1 original versions to need a poor reason to buy BG1: EE - since it really didn't stack much new content (according to many) and b/c it was not compatible w/ a lot of the BG1 old version's mod.

If they release a good + worthwhile expansion for BG1: EE, maybe people who didn't buy BG1:EE will go after this BG1: EE just so they can get the expansion.

That would work for me if the content was actually up to the standards of the first game. I heard the port wasn't as good as it could have been, and people complained about bugs ... though looking on Steam now, almost all the reviews are positive. Maybe they've been doing some patching? Either way, I'm more interested now than when I last looked at it.

Yes, it's been patched w/ a ton of fixes in one patch (over 200 fixes + some gameplay additions/changes):
