Here's their list for their Top 25 Game Franchises.... (http://pc.ign.com/articles/749/749073p1.html)
IGN's Top 25 Game Franchises
-----------------------------------
1. Mario
2. Legend of Zelda
3. Final Fantasy
4. Castlevania
5. Metal Gear Solid
6. Warcraft
7. Res Evil
8. Metroid
9. Sim
10. Civilization
11. Star Wars
12. Street Fighter
13. GTA
14. Dungeons & Dragons
15. Madden
16. Tom Clancy series
17. Pokemon
18. Chrono series
19. Sonic
20. Mega Man
21. Command & Conquer
22. Tetris
23. Donkey Kong
24. Half-Life
25. Virtua Fighter
-
Woah Half-Life is not in the top 10! And the Tom Clancy franchise is ahead ;D
-
I have no idea what they mean by "top". Chrono is far from a top series simply because there are hardly any Chrono titles all things considered, and Virtua Fighter couldn't be tops because it's been dead for longer than I can remember. Command and Conquer doesn't even deserve it. Whatever strides they made early on have since been lost as far as I'm concerned. And what about the biggest series we've got today like Final Fantasy and World of Warcraft? Say what you want about either, but right now they're still making money, still making quality games, and they've been around for a long ass time. Oh, and most Star Wars games suck ass (not all... most). Also, does Half-life even deserve a spot? Does two games *really* even constitute a series?
Whatever, fucking IGN. I hate them. That whole FFXII soundtrack thing really made me angry for some reason. Angrier than I've been with them for some time.
Oh, and I just realized 1-5 are still to come. I suppose that could help them out if they make good choices, but it still doesn't seem like a solid list to me.
And again... why do we even need lists like this?
-
The list is updated:
6: Warcraft
7: Resident Evil
8: Metroid
9: Sim
10: Civilization
I agree that a list like this is not anything worth mentioning or something... I'd rather see something like top series and franchises of all time with no ranking, simply more of a mention of the franchises, rather than attempting to rank them like this.
I can guess Mario will be on top.
-
You know it's going to be something like.
1) Zelda
2) Mario
3) Halo
4) Tony Hawk or some bullshit
5) Some more bullshit
-
Like you guys I was rolling my eyes at this, but what's a game website to do? They've got to write something heh. Yea some of those hardly have any games to be considered a franchise.
-
They are putting Halo above Half Life in terms of franchises? Above Pokemon? WTF? I don't care what they do with Halo, it simply wont ever be as strong as Pokemon. That shit was like a license to print money.
-
Idol speaks the truth.
-
I don't understand what they mean when they say Tom Clancy series. I'm assuming they mean Rainbow Six, but they could be more specific. There are lots of Tom Clancy games...rainbow six series, splinter cell series...
edit: oh it's game franchise. not series

Exactly.
Yeah, so that would include Splinter Cell, R6, Sum of all Fears, and -- are there any other Tom Clancy series?
Oh -- is Ghost Recon under Clancy, as well?

Yes it is.
I was gonna say Police Quest was too, but that was Daryl F. Gates. I thought Police Quest woulda made it in there too, but I guess it qualifies as "ancient" now.
-
I wonder if the Elder Scrolls series will make the list....Morrowind (plus expansions) and Oblivion were both excellent games.
Personally, I thought D&D could've been higher up -- w/ games like BG series (plus their expansions), PS:T, and NWN series (plus their expansions) under its belt, that's one awesome RPG franchise. I've yet to play Icewind Dale 1 + 2 (plus their expansions), but I bet those are good RPG's, too -- all also under the D&D license.
I've yet to buckle down and actually play TOEE, though -- yet, another D&D game.
-
Frankly, I don't care what they put on the list, but that's just me. :P
-

I agree. There's nothing wrong with making these lists for gaming site. They're fun and even if they suck, they provide some fun oppertunities to trash you're favorite things to hate.

Full list:
1. Mario
2. Zelda
3. Final Fantasy
4. Castlevania
5. Metal Gear Solid
6: Warcraft
7: Resident Evil

19. Sonic
20. Mega Man
21. Command & Conquer
22. Tetris
23. Donkey Kong
24. Half-Life
25. Virtua Fighter
Halo nowhere to be seen. I'm going to have to look at the xbox boards on IGN for some laughs at the nerd outrage.
-
... How could I forget about Castlevania and Final Fantasy when I made my mock five?
-
I wonder about Warcraft being as low as it is, though. At this point, it's probably made a hell of a lot more money than MGS as a franchise. I mean, I don't know what the criteria is, but I'd rate Warcraft way the fuck higher than MGS. But we all know how sick of stealth games I am, so that's probably why.
-
I question Virtua Fighter....is it really that strong of a franchise anymore?
-
I questioned that already. Yeah, it's pretty much dead. There was a fairly recent one that did well enough for itself, but hardly anything worthy of a dead franchise resurrection.
-
I know for sure that Virtua Fighter 5 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/virtuafighter5/index.html?q=Virtua%20Fighter%205) is coming to PS3. I loved Virtua Fighter back in the day, but I don't think it should be classified as "top franchise".. I mean it would have been more reasonable to list the "Virtua" franchise (Virtua Fighter, Virtua Soccer, Virtua Cop, Virtua Tennis, etc.), or even the AM2 Division of Sega.
I loved Virtua Cop ;D So Iw as happy to hear that Virtua Cop 3 (http://www.gamespot.com/arcade/action/virtuacop3/screenindex.html) is in the making ;D

It's all opinion, and IGN even says that editors didn't agree across the board on their votes. The problem is the people who will read it as some sort of divine gospel, rather than the subjective conversation piece that it is.
Where is Quake and/or Doom? See, I already have a serious problem with their opinions.

How Quake and Doom ain't on this list, that's beyond me.
Well, at least Halo ain't on the list.
