Title: SmileBASIC: Want to code on your 3DS?
Post by: idolminds on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, 05:35:00 PM
I bring this up because it is currently on sale on the 3DS eshop for $5 (thats half off) until Monday.

SmileBASIC (http://smilebasic.com/en/) is not a game in itself, but a way to make games or other programs using a special version of BASIC. Yes, "GOTO 10" or whatever. For $5 I thought it'd be fun to mess with and check out all the stuff the community has made for it. For example, someone made a modem program allowing you to save your programs to WAV files on your computer! Crazy. Anyway, it looks neat and I bought it. Note: A Wii U version is coming which will let you run the same programs and more importantly use a bluetooth keyboard with your Wii U for programming.

Smileboom ran a contest, and now you can Check out the results! (http://smilebasic.com/en/ogiri4/) If you have SmileBASIC you can even download them and play yourself, but if you want to see kind of what you can do with the thing theres screens and videos on the site.

Still a couple days left on the sale!

I wish I had the time for this. I messed around with the DSiware version, and it was really neat.

If you ever feel the urge, you should grab it sometime. It seems the Japanese side of the community is really active and making impressive stuff. One of the games from that contest is basically Advance Wars and really nice, but entirely in Japanese so I have no idea what I'm doing.

Another contest entry is Pics Limited. It's a program that lets you draw and paint. Super good, too. It could be a standalone painting app.

Soooooo...I have a question.  Has the 3DS been cracked yet?

I think so. There is a way to downgrade your firmware and run homebrew stuff. I think running games still requires a hardware thingy but I haven't looked into it that much.
