Been playing for a couple of hours now, and the graphics are quite good. It is obviously a Diablo clone, and for the most part gets it right, though the gameplay is even simpler than Diablo!!! Which is insane considering there is a five year time difference. But a lot of important little things from Diablo are missing. You would think Titan Quest would be a more advanced version of Diablo, but it isn't, at least in terms of gameplay and interface.
There is also a distinct lack of oooomph in the combat. It isn't bad, but not very impressive. Still it is highly addictive, and I hear it gets a lot better.
-
The Vede was all over it a while ago on PCG. And he's a Diablo 2 whore.
-
Yea he gave it 84%.
He is a Diablo whore, and whenever there is a decent game similar to Diablo he loves it. I remember how he loved Sacred.

Did he love Blade and Sword (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/bladeandsword/index.html?)? This game is basically Diablo with an Oriental twist.

Pretty sure that one didn't review well... anywhere.

Pretty sure that one didn't review well... anywhere.
Oh yeah, it did pretty bad overall :P The funny thing is every time I played Diablo I wanted to be a ninja or a samurai at least. B&S (pardon the pun) satisfied that knack for me, but it pretty much sucked at everything else.
The good part is that the game helped me realize how much I hate dungeon crawls and relentless monsters endlessly coming at me. The only part of a dungeon crawl I enjoy is the anticipation of clearing the dungeon/cavern and coming out alive. I actually feel a little claustrophobic in them too, even though I'm not actually in one.
-
Oh man this game just got a whole lot better. That lack of depth in the skill tree? Scratch that. Once you hit level 8 you are able to invest in another skill line, and the game just gets so much cooler.
There are 8 skill lines if I remember correctly, including DEFENSE, OFFENSE, Woodsmen, Nature etc.
I started out as a woodsmen basically investing in archery and throwing net traps etc until I hit level 8. I then proceeded to invest some points in nature, and went from woodsmen to ranger in the process. I have actually been playing this for the past six hours, which is something I haven't done in ages. Of course having an actual system to play on helps, but I am loving this.
Also if you start out in Defense you are basically a brick wall. One of those warriors with a big shield who knows who to cover a party.
Anyone into the Diablo games as much as I was definitely needs to own this game. If you find it for $25 it is certainly worth it. Especially for those of you on the forums who can coordinate to get a game online. It is so worth it.
Here are some screenies, that are pretty big I must warn.

It's definitely pretty. I remember wanting it before just because it was pretty, heh.
-
Holy FUCK!
I mean it takes a long while, but the skills are really warming up. For example my ensnare skill would basically be used as a projectile to trap enemies in position. I'd use it on the really tough mofos of a group so that I could take them out with my bow or have my wolves do the job. You can further deepen the ensnare skill so that it stays on longer and hurts a bit more, but you can also develop it to include thorns in the traps... this way when the bastards struggle, they bleed.
I just had a kick ass little battle with a cyclops. Check it out:
http://cc.1asphost.com/Pugnate/Titan%20Quest%2011.JPG
-
I have a theory as to why there was a lack of oomph earlier. I think it was to give the more powerful weapons more dramatic impact later. Right now I've got a wonderful bow that already came with fire damage and then I modified it to give it further fire power, and the impacts sound like bombs going off!
Plus there is hardly any bleeding, but when it happens it looks brutal. My wolf have just gained the ability to maul, and it looks sweet.
Here is something with blood on impact:

Here is a very pretty night screenie:

For those who played this, do you like this better than Dungeon Siege 1 and 2? How would they compare??? How is the interface and all???
I did like DS2 (took a while to really get going on the story and gameplay, though...) -- though, I really liked the DS2: Broken World expansion, even more so.
So, I am curious about this one...
Oh....how are the quests? Are there a lot???
-
Oh this is so much freaking' better. This game deserves an 85% score at least, and the only review that was on target was PC GAMER. I've never seen a game reviewed so well, and yet scored so low. Everyone says,"Oh well it is lots of fun, but it isn't original". I think the main purpose of a game is to be fun, and originality is overrated.
There are tons of quests, and the game play is really engaging. You know what? At first I was really impressed with Dungeon Siege's system of not investing in skills but rather having them improve as you use them? But as realistic as that is, it takes out the immersion factor.
This game is basically Diablo in a nice lovely engine. It is quite polished.
-
Interesting.
I like the sounds of the expansion, too. They are adding like EIGHT new classes! That's a lot for a NEW game, nevermind an expansion pack!
I wonder this: are there plans of them releasing a Titan Quest: Gold Edition Box w/ the original game and the expansion together???
-
I can imagine D's heaven... full of non linear games and expansions released in neat little packages that are DVD only. :P
D you should go for Titan Quest if you find a decent deal.
-
Are there lots of unique loot to find in this game?
That is truly one thing I really liked about say the NWN games and especially Dungeon Siege games -- just the amounts of unique loot are huge, always having you to come back for more.
-
When I played it, I remember there were loads of loot and unique items. You could even enhance some weapons and armour. And there are sets to collect, which can give you bonuses when you wear them together. Very diverse loot.
-
Yes D, just like Diablo there is plenty of unique loot. In fact I think there is a bit too much unique stuff heh.
The modification system is pretty cool. You find shards/artifacts that you can use for modifications. But once you use a certain shard/artifact for a modification, you can only use that type of modificatin again, so you have to wait to find other identical shards/artifacts. You are also restricted in the number of times you can modify. Once you hit that limit, you get a nice bonus.
For example you can use shards of turtle shells to modify your shield to add to the defense number. Once you apply five turtle shards, you get a strength bonus. Each modification item/artifact is meant to be used with a specific piece of arsenal. For example the turtle shells can be used with shields, while a Zeus's lightning artifact can be used with weapons. Most of the artifacts you find are for weapons, though you will find plenty for armor, rings as well as shields.
D, the game is very different from NWN. It is even a bit different from Dungeon Siege, especially in the interface and visual perspective. While Dungeon Siege had some strategy in its gameplay, it didn't have a lot of immersion in its stats system.
Titan Quest has a very cool tech tree, and is quite involving. The pacing is pretty good, though some parts can stretch. Huge game though.

I see EB.com (http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=646593) and BestBuy.com (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7867409&st=titan+quest&type=product&id=1142301395158)got the TQ: DVD Edition listed for $20 now.....
-
Thats a good deal...damnit I dont want to spend any more money! Must...resist.....
-
For $20 that's a lot of game to play.
-
Shut up! Get out of my
wallet head!
-
haha.. well keep it in mind when you have the green to spend. There is so much of the same thing that I am playing it in four goes. Each act is like one game or something for me. I've just done one act and am taking a break from it.

You make it sound the game takes like 60 hours or more. :P

X, how did you like this game, overall...?
-
I looked at the screenies; looks nice, Puggy.
The interface on the bottom of the screen looks good, too. :)
Oh --- does this game have party members??? Or is it you against an army of 9000???
-
Its 1 vs 100 with Bob Saget.
D, did you ever play Diablo? Its like that with a Greek setting.
If you never played Diablo then this thread ends here and you march out and buy it.
-
D doesn't like Diablo.
-
...how is that even possible?
-
Too, uh... linear?
-
Is Diablo really that great? I played the demo of Diablo 2 and to be honest I wasn't all that impressed.
-
Yes this is basically Diablo.
Also you are either addicted to Diablo or not. I find it hard to explain to infidels err.. friends why I love it so much. I got so addicted to it, that I actually missed work once. Now that I think about it, I feel ashamed. :(
-
Diablo 2 is one of the greatest games ever made. You have to get to a certain point where you understand what's so great, though. If you just sit down and play for five minutes you probably won't get it. The addiction comes almost entirely from building your character and watching how that lets you slaughter more things.

I think it is eight hours per act buddy. Unfortunately no party members, but yes the interface is quite good.

For those who own Titan Quest: CD Edition, how many discs does that actually come on....?
I know there is a DVD Ed out there....
EDIT:
I found out how many CD's it comes on..... (http://www.ironlore.com/faq.html)
7) Q: I bought the DVD version, but I don’t have a DVD player.
A: Please contact THQ to arrange to exchange the product for the CD (5 Disc) version of Titan Quest.
5 CD's?!?!?!
That's crazy talk....
-
5 CDs isn't that many, D. Games commonly come on 5 CDs these days. You probably own at least 3 or 4 on so many.
-
Far Cry came on that many if I'm not mistaken. 5CDs is about the norm now.
<rant>Fuck, what is with leaving DVD releases to collectors editions and charging $10+ more for it? Collectors editions are about the extras like cloth maps and figurines and shit. Both the regular release and collectors should be on DVD now. If you can afford a $300 videocard to play current PC titles you can bloody well afford a $30 DVD drive for christs sake.</rant>
-

X3: Reunion is on 6 CD's. Major blah.
Dreamfall was on 6 CD's. Yuck!
Far Cry's on 5 CD's. Ick.
Psychonauts was on 5 CD's.
Riddick was on like 4 or 5 CD's; can't recall....don't feel like looking.
SW: KOTOR 1 and 2 were on 4 CD's.
GRAW PC is on 4 CD's.
Vamp: BL was on 4 CD's.
DS2 was on 4 CD's.
Fable: TLC was on 4 CD's.
Yuh, this trend is TOO common, these days....especially since DVD drives are only like $30 to put in.....
<rant>Fuck, what is with leaving DVD releases to collectors editions and charging $10+ more for it? Collectors editions are about the extras like cloth maps and figurines and shit.
They want you to opt for the Collector's Ed for $10 more, that's why.
They want you to realize that not only are you getting the game on DVD w/ the Collector's Ed, but look at this -- more extra stuff!!! Oh, wow..... ::)
Both the regular release and collectors should be on DVD now.
Agreed.
NWN2 did the right thing. The standard edition was on CD and DVD.
There was also a collector's ed that put the game on DVD and gave other extra stuff....
That's the way it should be done!
Actually, let's go a step further here. Oblivion did it right. Standard and Collector's Editions are on DVD PERIOD. END of STORY.
If you can afford a $300 videocard to play current PC titles you can bloody well afford a $30 DVD drive for christs sake.</rant>
Amen, Idol! I agree. Preach it, brother.
4 or 5 CD's is NOT as expensive for publishers to put a game on as opposed to one DVD, right?
-
Its 1 vs 100 with Bob Saget.
D, did you ever play Diablo? Its like that with a Greek setting.
I got the original Diablo.
Never got D2, b/c I was not impressed w/ D1's SP. It was okay, but nothing special to me. Though, the MP portion was give -- let's give the devil his due on the MP; I played MP a lot w/ others; that was much better than playing the SP. I finished the SP, but it didn't do much for me.
Though, after trying recent action-RPG's, I did like Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 -- and those games are action crazy. I own Sacred, but ain't began it -- I want to get Sacred: Underworld; that succubus class sounds....different....I did like Divine Divinity -- and that game is loaded w/ action, but DD is also quite open w/ the gameworld and has loads of side quests.
If I do get TQ and like TQ, maybe -- maybe I should give D2 a chance, someday...for the right price....
-
My copy of Titan Quest: DVD-ROM Edition arrived today. :)
YAY!!!!
-
I should go buy this...
-
I should go buy this...
$20 at Best Buy.
I got the DVD Edition online from their website, which had FREE SHIPPING on it when I ordered it (on this past Sat or Sunday).

Umm....what's up w/ the lack of character models for your hero/heroine???
Are there any other models you can select from besides the one default for the hero and one default for the heroine?
-
Probably not. This isn't "that kind" of RPG.
-
Probably not. This isn't "that kind" of RPG.
This game comes w/ an Editor, so I'm wondering if there are any SKINS out there for characters models made by modders/players?
-
I began TQ last nite. Holy shit, TWO HOURS flew by REAL fast w/ this thing. Yeah, this game is definitely well made and thought out.
What this game really does well is so many things -- from the combat to the interface. A lot of it seems like they been watching Dungeon Seige 2. Everything is so clean and well laid out. Not cumbersome at all or anything.
The combat is addictive. The action is quick and there are lots of loot dropped -- to add to that, many different types of loot -- so I find myself heading back to town a lot to sell my stuff A LOT. So, b/c of this, I really love this portal thing -- just throw a portal back to town, and then come right back to where the hell you were at. I did that a lot in DS2, as well. I'm a loot whore -- a pack-rat, so this really helps my damn cause! :)
The skill systems looks really good. Forget the class system, develop what skills you so want to; period. Right now, I'm concentrating increasing my character as a Rogue w/ lots of strength. For Rogue abilities -- namely, I'm working on the POISON ability. Oh man....magically and naturally POISONING my attacks are freakin' nasty in this game. I'm lovin' that! :)
Though, performance is not the greatest. I got things on medium and sometimes, the framerate will go from say 50 to like 15-20 in a flash. At least, it is not for long when it does this.
I wish I could auto-sort loot, like you could in DS2. Though, at least the TQ expansion will add that option.
-
There is also a distinct lack of oooomph in the combat. It isn't bad, but not very impressive. Still it is highly addictive, and I hear it gets a lot better.
I think it's not the combat itself, which I find very addictive.
It seems to be lacking some good sound effects, when it comes to the actual sound of the combat in the game.
-
haha you bought it! Awesome. We should play together.
-
haha you bought it! Awesome. We should play together.
I haven't tried the MP.
Is it Co-Op? PvP?
Or can you choose b/t the two?
Can I use my same character from SP in the MP?
-
I was extremely tempted to purchase this tonight. Only thing that held me back was no one had the DVD edition. Might just order it off amazon or something.

My local Best Buy had a bunch, this past weekend.
Too bad Best Buy isn't doing free shipping this week; they did the last 2 weeks.
And I made sure I ordered the DVD Ed from BestBuy.com, when I saw free shipping that week.
-
I'm going to keep looking. I only checked the one BB and a gamestop. I'm sure I'll find it.
-

G'luck.
TQ is fun, but it's not the best performing game....Be warned....
It runs better than NWN2, though....
-
Found the DVD edition tonight and grabbed it. Also found Darwinia for $5 and figured "Why not?"
-
I want to find Darwinia for $5. :(
-
It was just lucky at Gamestop. They also had the collectors edition of Prey for $20...but I was already getting TQ so held off.
-

Sweet!

Ooooh....you gotta let me know how Darwinia is!
$5 for that sounds good to me! :)

Ooooh...Prey: Collector's Ed rocks.
I love the metal tin the DVD comes in, too. Freakin' awesome.
-
Darwinia is cool. I downloaded it when it came out and played through a bit of it. I havent installed the retail copy yet because I'm lazy. I just wanted to have it. Oh, it also came with a poster and a Darwinian keychain.
Back to Titan Quest. So far very cool. I can see where Pug said the combat lacked "oomf" when you start. I wasn't sure what build to make...and its kind of a bitch to try them out since you have to level before you can use the abilities. So I grabbed a trainer that allows me to screw around on some "cheat" characters and try stuff. I like the rogue stuff, but leaning towards a Hunter/Wilderness dude like pugs (thats my WoW druid coming back to me). Though a total caster would be fun as well....hmmmm....
-
Damn you guys, I just went and picked up a copy of Titan Quest earlier tonight, too. I seriously have to study, fools.
-

I'm a Rogue Mastery.
I love the poison ability. Maxed that sucker out, ASAP. Basically, one blow on most monsters, I can just sit back and then just let the poison grind them to death.
I think what the combat lacks is good sound effects. The game's hits, I'm just really not feeling too much -- namely, on the ears. Oblivion *sounds* like when you hit someone (or are being hit), you're knocking the shit out of them. Dark Messiah also *sounds* good when hitting someone. NWN2 sounds good, as well, when you hit them.
That is something Titan Quest lacks.
-
haha, this trainer is awesome. I maxed out like everything and was launching baddies into the air when I hit them. There was a group of like 8 enemies fighting a NPC and I did like a fireball on them...launched all of them into the air. It was raining bodies and weapons.
-
Damn you guys, I just went and picked up a copy of Titan Quest earlier tonight, too. I seriously have to study, fools.
muhahaha...
You know there are two people who I know will enjoy this. Sirean and Que.
Umm....what's up w/ the lack of character models for your hero/heroine???
Are there any other models you can select from besides the one default for the hero and one default for the heroine?
Yea that ticked me off as well. Idol is right, it isn't that sort of RPG.
Diablo 2 has you start the game by picking one of five characters. Each character is of his own class and thus own skill tree. The character models were also beautifully designed, but not customizable. But the advantage of selecting a character early on was that it gave some variety online.
In Titan Quest online everyone looks the same. That and the lack of oomph early on are my two negatives, otherwise the game is highly addictive. :)
But D is right, it wasn't the combat as much as the skill system that caused my addiction.
-
I think I would definitely like this, but my RPG needs are being completely met by Oblivion right now, and I've got several projects now going in that arena which make it tough to get into anything else. I'm going to be working as an editor over at The Imperial Library (http://til.gamingsource.net/), and I'm also compiling a massive Elder Scrolls Dictionary. And with Shivering Isles coming out... yeah. I won't be budging from Oblivion for a good long while. I'll probably snag TQ when it gets a gold edition DVD with the original game and the expansion for cheap.
-

Agreed w/ the lack of character models.

I think the combat itself is fun. I like the combat, gameplay-wise and all. It's pretty addictive. That's not the problem....
...It's just the *sounds* (sound effects) need to *sound* like someone is gettin' knocked the hell out of it -- like it does in *many* other RPG's.
Even Silverfall (in the demo) sounds much better, sound-wise.
-
Once you enhance your weapons the impact is far bigger.

In the game's sound effects department??

Oh yea. Try a weapon with a few fire mods or lightning mods. Massive impact.

I'll have to mod-up my weapons, then,
Even zoomed in, the sound effects ain't so hot.
-
You haven't modded your weapons yet? How far are you BTW? You will find tons of artifacts and if you use a certain set together then you get bonus properties.

I just finished killin' the beast so I can talk to that guy, in the Spartan Camp.
Spoke to him, about to do whatever's next.
-
Sweet. I was looking up the expansion and I can't believe how massive it is.
-
Sweet. I was looking up the expansion and I can't believe how massive it is.
Yeah, especially w/ the new Dream Mastery addition....
...even though it'll only be 10 hours of new quest content.
So, that means it'll take me say....15-20 hours...
Yeah, like it did for me w/ DS2: Broken World. :P
The Underworld in Immortal Throne does look cool, though.
I like dark tones & settings in my games. :)
Can I have more than one Specialization in TQ?
Right now, I'm focused on the Rogue.
-
When you hit level 8 you get to pick a second specialization. So you could be a rogue/hunter or whatever you want. Kind of like Guild Wars in that manner.
-

Ooooh, freakin' sweet....!
EDIT:
I'm like Level 6 already, BTW.
-
Patch 1.30 is out now.
REQUIREMENT for this patch -- you must already have Version 1.20 installed. (http://www.demortex.com/apps/tqdefiler/backups/TitanQuest1_30.exe)

I wish more RPG's had as many unique stacks of lots and so many different enchanted variations of loot like this game has.
It's as if Iron Lore stuck a bunch of guys aside from the beginning of development and said, "Okay, guys -- all I want you guys to do EVER is make as many variations and different amounts of loot and we'll see what you guys made in around some 2-3 years, when it's all done."
Hehe.
Are there any other RPG's w/ this much loot in many different unique sets and different enchanted variations of loot as this game???
The amount this game has is, well, quite staggering....
-
Diablo 2, for one. Hellgate is supposed to have similar loot generation. You can also try Fate.
Or heck, even World of Warcraft.
-
Diablo 2, for one. Hellgate is supposed to have similar loot generation. You can also try Fate.
Hellgate will??? Really????
Ooooh, that's interesting. I was already looking forward to HG. Even more so, after hearing that.
I always seem to be swapping weapon and armor in and out for my character in Titan Quest, unlike most other RPG's. Usually, in most RPG's, I change armor and weapons here and there, not all the time.
I swap weapons and armor all the time in TQ for my character. I always am selling armor in TQ, like I do in most RPG's -- but even more so than most, here, too.
I wish Oblivion's loot was more varied like say TQ's.
-
For those playing TQ...
1. What is the "class" the game has deemed you actually (based namely on what skills you choose to upgrade)?
2. What level are you?
3. How many hours you into the game?
Me, I'm
1. An Illusionist (namely working on Rogue and Nature skills)
2. Level 11
3. Over 8 hours.

"Medierra" of Crate Entertainment, who was an ex-Iron Lore dev on Titan Quest + Immortal Throne, talks about the problems of "Creative freedom" that they ran into w/ THQ publishing and wanting more control over MANY aspects of the game. (http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?p=37225#post37225)
One example of this would be the mandate that enemies not use language or build anything that would make them seem like they had more than animal intelligence. It was felt by one of the higher-ups that people might feel wrong killing enemies that displayed any obvious intelligence. I guess somehow it is wrong to fight intelligent enemies but okay to slaughter dumb animals? We also weren't originally allowed to have humans die, ever, in the game and no human corpses.
Basically, my belief is that Titan Quest never had as much style and character as it could have because we were afraid to do anything even remotely controversial. When I first designed the skill masteries, they were all based on Olympian gods, with skills modeled after the powers or attributes associated with different gods in mythology. This was rejected because it was potentially too religious and people might not want to feel like they were worshiping mythological gods to receive their powers.
We ended up with a game set in Greek mythology that barely contained any actual mythology other than the inspiration for some of the monsters and dialog on peripheral story-teller NPCs stuck off to the side in the towns. The first quest I put in the game, when we were prototyping it for THQ was modeled after one of the 12 labors of Heracles. The Erymanthian Board was terrorizing a town and the hunters they sent after it hadn't returned. You had to ascend mount Erymanthos, discover the wreckage of the hunter's camp, and then continue on to the snow-capped summit to battle the monstrous board. Of course, I was told we couldn't have snow on the summit because people might not realize it snowed in Greece and then later the whole quest vanished and was replaced by generic crap like retrieving a dowry ring so some chick can get married while monsters are overrunning the world.
