Title: Best action movie of all time?
Post by: scottws on Monday, September 18, 2006, 06:35:09 AM
I vote Aliens or Demolition Man.

Aliens just kicks so much ass it's unreal, plus it's got a bit of a horror element.  Demolition Man was just great.  Lots of good, sometimes corny humor, plus Sly Stallone and Wesley Snipes duking it out in the future.  Awesome.

Enhance your calm as you move this to the correct board.   ;D

I like both of those.  I also like Terminator 2.

Edit:  ????  Maybe I should enhance my calm.  I could swear this was on the games board.  Anyway, I may be losing it . . .

heh I moved it before your post. :P

Also I loved Aliens, but I'd think The Matrix or Terminator 2 off the top of my head.

I was gonna go with Die Hard: With A Vengeance or The Rock.

Haha.  I don't know what happened.  I could have sworn I posted it to the Movies and Music board, but I obviously didn't.

I like both of those.  I also like Terminator 2.
I like Terminator 2, but there are parts I don't like as well.  I just find some of the movie slow when they are hiding out and stuff.  Especially the part where they go to the desert.

Hmm.... HMM. Raiders of the Lost Ark. or Die Hard. I DUNNO! What is considered action these days? Giant explosions? Guns? T&A? Also, The Road Warrior is awesome.

I think the best definition of "action" is whatever it really means to you.

Okay. Then I'm going to say Action/Adventure type movies... so I'll pick The Empire Strikes Back. I get an erection everytime I see it. Fo sho.

Haha Imagine a really REALLY mellow person: "I'm gonna go with Waiting to Exhale, the emotional action was just too much to bear!"

Now that I've had some time to think about it, I'd put Equilibrium, Sin City, and Run Lola Run up there completing my top 5 list.

Well, I guess Kingdom of Heaven woulda been up there, I really loved it, but I classified it as more of a historic drama with some action.

Its funny how all 3 lord of the rings movies are in the top 10, and they never even crossed my mind when trying to decide on this topic. They just arent action movies to me.

I still cant decide on this one, though. Terminator 2 is up there. Matrix is up there.

I love all of those movies except for #10, thats only because I don't know what it is.  For my own personal favorite its probably a mix up between Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, or the Lord of the Rings movies.

Pretty much all my favorites have been mentioned save for two. I have a rather unhealthy amount of love for Predator and Conan, so I'm throwing them onto the list.

Aliens would definitely be high on my list.  And as much as I loved Equilibrium, there are a few things that hold it back from being tops for me.  Still, that's a huge runner-up for me and I've got a big soft spot for it.  Julia and I watched it again the other night.  It's really a great flick with a decent message to boot.

I dunno' though, I'm not really an action movie guy as much as I once was.

Equilibrium was good, but Taye Diggs sucked ass in the movie.  The whole thing was supposed to be the lack of emotion, and it was almost like Diggs was the most emotional character in the whole movie.  He was constantly grinning and stuff like that.
Title: Re: Best action movie of all time?
Post by: Xessive on Monday, September 18, 2006, 10:34:27 PM
Taye seemed way too emotionally obsessed with getting Preston (Christian Bale). The parts which bugged me most were the contradictions. Like they're against emotion and the presence of colours which can incite emotional reaction, but their frickin' flag is RED! Then there was the gun swap issue, Bale and Diggs' characters had already swapped guns earlier in the movie, so the second swap would have just returned their original guns.

Nontheless, I blocked the flaws out in order to enoy the action, and I really liked it. That's when I really started liking Christian Bale.

I love The Fifth Element. Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance are up there for me too. Pretty much all the movies everyone has mentioned I enjoy a good bit. Probably one that I like alot that I havent seen is True Lies, I have a weak spot for Tom Arnolds humor in that one, plus its got all the good fight scenes and explosions any action fan craves.

I have trouble choosing between Hard Boiled and The Killer.

I mean, come on.  "Give a man a gun, and he's Superman.  Give a man two guns, and he's god."

I didn't like Serenity all that much, not after the standards Firefly set. Plus the excessive deaths were just dumb.

It's up there for me too.  The editing is what pushes that movie into greatness.  So tight.

I've noticed I generally like Luc Besson movies.. He can turn any shite movie into something great!

I bet if he had nothing to do with Banleiue 13 it would have turned out to be cheap and cheesy action B-movie! Let's face it the story wasn't exactly its strong point :P I think it was Luc who added that touch which gave it action awesomeness!

Die Hard With a Vengence, or True Lies

Those are my picks... Two superb action movies.

I still think Predator is pretty fuckin boss as well.

I loved Serenity.  I thought it was completely awesome even when placed alongside Firefly.  The deaths did bother me a bit, though.  They did seem a bit unnecessary.

And am I the only one who thought the Fifth Element was really stupid?  It's been an awfully long time since I've seen it, but I don't remember liking virtually anything about it except for a few of the gunfights.

I thought Fifth Element was kind of dumb as well. I can see the attraction, but it's not for me.

Die Hard and Terminator 2 are probably it for me. Maybe Lethal Weapon as well, but it's been a while since I've seen that.

For me The Fifth Element is all about the style and the look. I frankly loved it.

I don't know how you could not like the movie. It has Bruce Willis being awesome. It has Gary Oldman being completely awesome. It has Milla Jovovich being awesome because she doesn't really have to talk. Ian Holm is just cool. Chris Tucker is in a role well suited to him. The whole movie just looks great. Cobra already said how tight the movie is. Finally, it's just completely fun.

My favorite part:  Chris Tucker screaming like a girl.  Hilarious!

I love the whole thing. It's just an awesome movie. Like you guys said, the editing, and pacing is perfect. The characters are colorful, and unique. The story is original. The style is superb. It's just a blast. It's one of those movies I can watch over and over and over and over again and never get tired of it. I actually went to see it twice in one day when it came out in theaters, and I saw it again a couple days later.

I was indifferent to Chris Tucker's performance. Weird thing is that it was one of the few movies outside the Rush Hour flicks that Tucker's been in.

Where the hell is that guy anyway? I thought he retired but then I heard he was doing Rush Hour 3.

I think Chris burned himself out or something.  Not that he was the same character in all his movies, but he was close.

My Vote:  Die Hard.  Not a huge fan of Bruce but it's just a fun movie.  Alan Rickman is splendid.

I just watched Crank. I think of it as a sex/drugs/violence orgy. Sure the action was great, but it's all built on a &$%*ing stupid base.

When I first saw the trailer it said that he was injected with a crazy Chinese toxin that will kill him unless he keeps his adrenaline levels up. The first question that came to my mind was "How did that happen to him?" The movie answers that in a petty retarded way. You see this right in the intro of the movie so I don't think it's a spoiler. Basically a bunch of guys wanted to kill him so they snuck into his apartment while he was asleep and they injectd him with it. A retarded monkey could figure that it's a fairly stupid premise. If you wanted to inject him with something to kill him (as oppose to actually killing him while he's asleep) why not use the classic tried & true shit?? Cyanide, hell even rat poison would have done it! The man was knocked out!

I don't know... I wouldn't list many of the movies you guys talk about as action. Like Braveheart is probably my all time favorite movie, but I wouldn't call it an action movie.

Yeah me neither.. I'd put Gladiator, Braveheart, Troy, and Kingdom of Heaven in the same category, whatever it is.

Historical epics I guess.
Title: Re: Best action movie of all time?

Right, I don't think of them as "action movies" either.  But that doesn't mean someone else does.

Personally, when I think of what an action movie is, I think of Commando, Rambo, Predator, Die Hard... stuff like that.

Yeah exactly.. Like "constant heart-pumping action ride" kinda movies!

I think Epic or Historic Epics, as Pug said, probably applies best to Braveheart and Gladiator.

Man, I just remembered Alexander.. Man I hated that movie! They destroyed the charactrer of one of my personal heroes! All of a sudden Alexander the Great is a timid, unconfident weeny, who alway cries to his mama?! What the Hell man?! Alexander was young and bad ass! And he probably didn't squint as often as Colin Farrell! Though Angelina was hot as ever. That was just about the only good thing in that movie.
