Title: $700 PC (request from IRC)
Post by: idolminds on Thursday, October 11, 2007, 10:48:23 PM
This is the $700 PC that someone posted on IGN:

This PC does not have a DX10 video card, but by the time one is required, it will be easy to upgrade to with this machine and for very cheap. So without further ado....the setup!

$112 - Windows Vista (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116204)
$70 - Case + 500W Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156062)
$122 - 1.8GHz E4400 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013). Highly overclockable, but still decent without. (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2903&p=6)
$60 - Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138048)
$75 - 2GB memory (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098)
$140 - ATI x1950 512MB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161061)
$60 - 160GB HDD, 16MB cache (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136062)
$32 - DVD-RW drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151153)

Total: $671

I'm not counting monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers here.

For the elderly, those are links in the quote.

Edit: Idol beat me to it.

Edit 2: I really have nothing of value to add to the thread.

I'd go for the 7950GT instead.

Better card, same price.

But yea, that would still run games better than the PS3.

Well maybe.

Not too shabby, but I have a good enough system on my end.

Pug, you'd be hard-pressed to find a 7950 GT for under $200 here.  You might be able to find a 7900 GS for around that price, and still.  Buh.

damn they've gone up! I guess there is a shortage because I bought two for $150 each and now they are $250 on newegg!

What's the best "bang for the buck" on the current Intel Duo Core processors, BTW?

If you are overclocking then the E6550 isn't bad, though I'd just recommend you get the E6850.

The quadcore is a nice deal but the clock speed is low and it isn't a good overclocker. In fact as it stands now, the E6850 is a better option as most games like the speed. That could change within a few years, but I am going to wait till a faster quadcore gets to a lower price.

How easy is it to overclock these cpu's though?  I was always of the impression that in order to be able to overclock enough for major performance boosts you'd need to lay the cash down on aftermarket cooling, a better mobo, and very good ram, thus pretty much negating the price difference in actual cpus.

I'm looking at Core 2 Duos right now, and I want something that's able to pretty much be able to play anything right now, plus for a little while to come without breaking the bank.  The E6550 is $179, but aparently doesn't overclock nearly as well as the rest of them.  The E6750 is $205, which isn't bad for the increase in clock speed, and it overclocks well, while the E4400 is $150.

I don't really want to fuck around too much if I'm going to be overclocking.  I'd like to be able to run an app or just pop into the bios and switch some settings around quickly.  I've never really done it before.  That said, in my mind the E6750 at that price seems like the best bet (the E6850 is about a hundred dollars more, which isn't really worth it), but the E6550 is kind of tempting.  What I read was it has a multiplier of 7, which in some way or another really affects what you can get out of it overlcocking without spending big money on whatever mobo.  Any opinions on this?

Well Gregg, the intel core duos are extremely easy to overclock, but it depends on which processor it is exactly. I bought my E6400 a year ago and to this day it is running at the same speed as a E6800 without any problems at 45 degrees.

I am using stock cooling, though have a good motherboard and RAM.

Listen, let's not get Pyro involved in this. The fact is, you're being a bitch. I understand, though. Obviously you need to go shop for some tampons or something. You  need some of your little "put on your makeup" time. It's cool. You need to look good, I understand. Listen, take your time. WE UNDERSTAND.

It depends. Usually Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are dedicated to making fun of you. But honestly, we do it as much as we can. It would be better if you were there to receive the punishment personally, but we laugh either way.

Its like the opposite of a beard. Instead of shaving your neck and having the beard on your face, you shave your face and have a hairy neck.

I don't get it. :P

But that's excellent news, excellent news indeed.

Nvidia's 6 series chipset mobo costing about $150 should be sufficient to get the max performance out of a lower clocked processor.

I heard about this. Wasn't it a fashion trend started by the women of France?
