Have you tried Angry Birds? It's supposed to be super addictive and fun, but I can't find it on the Android Market atm.
What I showed was a technology demo, written from scratch, but using the RAGE content creation pipeline and media. We do not have the full RAGE game running on iOS, and we do not plan to try. While it would (amazingly!) actually be possible to compile the full-blown PC/console RAGE game for an iPhone4 with some effort, it would be a hopelessly bad idea. Even the latest and greatest mobile devices are still a fraction of the power of a 360 or PS3, let alone a high end gaming PC, so none of the carefully made performance tradeoffs would be appropriate for the platform, to say nothing of the vast differences in controls. He goes on to talk about the gameplay and a bunch of coder speak for making developing for the platform. But coming next month, roughly 700MB (double that for iphone 4/ipad), and hitting the $0.99 price point? Sounds like something Im going to have to check out.
What we do have is something unlike anything ever seen on the iOS platforms. It is glorious, and a lot of fun. Development has been proceeding at high intensity since QuakeCon, and we hope to have the app out by the end of November.
The technical decision to use our megatexture content creation pipeline for the game levels had consequences for its scope. The data required for the game is big. Really, really big. Seeing Myst do well on the iPhone with a 700 meg download gave me some confidence that users would still download huge apps, and that became the target size for our standard definition version, but the high definition version for iPad / iPhone 4 will be around twice that size. This is more like getting a movie than an app, so be prepared for a long download. Still, for perspective, the full scale RAGE game is around 20 gigs of data with JPEG-XR compression, so 0.7 gigs of non-transcoded data is obviously a tiny slice of it.
Since we weren’t going to be able to have lots of hugely expansive levels, we knew that there would be some disappointment if we went out at a high price point, no matter how good it looked. We have experimented with a range of price points on the iPhone titles so far, but we had avoided the very low end. We decided that this would be a good opportunity to try a $0.99 SD / $1.99 HD price point. We need to stay focused on not letting the project creep out of control, but I think people will be very happy with the value.
On twitter he said "I'm going to regret having "ios" in all my type names when I port Rage Mobile to Android." So yeah, unofficially and might have just been a funny comment.
I picked up Epic's Epic Citadel and Infinity Blade yesterday... and holy fucking hell. I can't believe what I see when I play them. The graphics are just astounding for the iPod. No idea how they squashed Unreal Engine 3 on there and still get it to run so well.
Anyway, I'm not sure if IB is worth the price (the other is free, just a tech demo, but totally worth the download). It's $6 and only 80-something megs, which is astounding for how good it looks, but it seems really super limited. I've only been through it once, but it appears to basically be a single level you play over and over. You fight dudes, get treasure, fight more dudes, and upgrade yourself and your stuff, fight the big bad dude at the end, then start over and fight harder, higher level enemies, get new gear, find more stuff, fight the big bad guy again... and then I'm guessing you just keep doing that. It seems to play into the story, though I don't know if there really is one or not. The guy kills you and each time you go through it's as if you're the son of the last guy, but the bad guy is sucking up each soul every time you fail. He's level 50, so I'm guessing eventually through your bloodlines you get powerful enough to kill him and then win the game.
I don't know if things open up a little more on subsequent playthroughs or not. I'll have to put a little more time into it before I can say, I only confronted him once. There are new enemies as I go so far, some of which look different and have some different moves, but I don't know how many are included. The good news is there's going to be at least one free addon, some sort of dungeon you can go through (hopefully a whole new level like the one that's included), with more gear and more enemies to fight. If they do a few of those, I'd say the game would very likely be worth getting. I'll let you know if there's anything new going on as my playthroughs increase, but so far it seems like it may be too limited to truly be worth the price of entry. Still, they do seem to be supporting it with free content and supposedly a multiplayer element later on, so there's definitely some hope.
But man does it look gorgeous, easily the coolest looking game I've seen for iOS. Everything about it is just... well, epic. Will post an update soon in regards to its current level of content. I particularly need to see if they add enough new enemy types as it goes to keep the combat from getting stale. My primary gripe right now is there doesn't seem to be any reason to dodge versus parry. Block is sort of the easy way out, but if you fuck up a dodge or parry you take damage, and if you dodge strikes correctly you open the enemy up for an attack string, and if you parry his strikes correctly you open him up for an attack string. I'm hoping that with new and higher level enemies you'll have to mix it up because some strikes can't be blocked, maybe some you have to dodge because they're too strong to parry... dunno'. We'll see.
I'm still waiting for a good Android game. All I have that is any good is Angry Birds. Infect is alright too.
I have the following Android games and I think they're pretty good... though they are still not up to the caliber of what iOS is getting like Infinity Blade and Rage:
Angry Birds -- obviously good. Yep have this and it's decent. I like Crush the Castle on Armor Games more for some reason.
Angry Birds Seasons -- seasonal version of Angry Birds. Free; currently has the Halloween and Christmas themes. I have this too. I'm having a lot of trouble with it. Hard!
Buka -- shmup like game. Simple but fun. You touch and hold on a point on the screen to shoot to clear the path for your character. There's a free version so try it out first before you buy.
Fruit Ninja -- same as the iOS version. I have a free game called Ninja Kaka, which I presume is similar. It was fun for about 10 minutes.
Flight Director -- There are a couple variants of this on the market but I think this one is the best because it offers the most maps and uses 'real' airports. You direct planes to land. Pretty cool. I like this one.
Retro Defense -- good defense game
Robo Defense -- another good defense game This was the first Android game I got. It was decent, but I found myself wishing for an Android version of Defense Grid.
SliceIt -- Same as iOS version, but this one is free. One drawback is fairly intrusive ads though.
Spaghetti Marshmallow -- great game on Android. You build structures using spaghettis and marshmallows to try and reach objects. Kind of like World of Goo and other physics based construction puzzles. Really challenging once you get past the demo stages though. I love World of Goo, but I couldn't get into this. Either I don't like the mechanics or I'm missing some piece of them.
SteamBirds -- good turn based flight strategy game. There's a flash version of the game for free on the web though. Yeah, I have the demo. It was okay. Don't think it's something I'd pay for.
Totemo -- from the same developers as Buka. This one is a brain teaser though where you have to clear the screen in groups of 2, 3, 4, 5.
Speedx 3D -- like Wipeout in 'Pure' mode. Try and survive as long as possible. One of my favorite games on Android at the moment. Sweet game.
aTilt 3D -- I just downloaded this one and it's kind of fun. Yeah there are so many Labyrinth games though. I didn't like this one as much as another on I had.
Glad you guys are liking the game so far! To answer the question of how the episode mechanics work:I just finished Volume One, the free "season". Even on its own its probably worth the buck I paid. I really enjoyed it. Then I played the currently airing Volume 2, Chapter 1. Like some TV shows, it has a subtle story thats going to span across the series, but it also has its own little self-contained story. Its a little shocking after playing Volume 1 because it was so long and one huge story to then play this and solve a crime in 10 minutes.
- The game ships with all of 'Volume One'.
- New chapters of Volume two are released each week as 'Now Airing' episodes. For the duration of the time an episode is 'Now Airing', it is free to download and play. Until Friday 12/24, the Now Airing episode will be “Volume Two, Chapter One: Tough Love”.
- At the end of each week, the current 'Now Airing' episode moves to 'Episodes on Demand' where it will be available for purchase, and a new episode becomes 'Now Airing'.
Basically, when you buy the game, you get access to free, new episodes each week. If you miss playing an episode while it is free, want to catch up, or want to be able to replay it after the week is done, you can purchase it from the On Demand store. Once you buy an episode from the On Demand store, it is yours forever and will not disappear.
Jamie, to answer your question, the game ships with "Volume One", which is a huge complete crime story that is made up of 6 chapters.
The subsequent weekly chapters will make up Volume Two, so when put together, they will tell a complete story. Think of it like TV show seasons and episodes
We've put our most popular games on sale for just $0.99 each, some for the first time ever, and a third of all our sales (after Apple takes their share) will be donated to Child's Play!Apple takes 30%, and whatever is left over they donate 1/3rd of that. I did the math and for every game sold, they donate 23 cents.

The good news is that you are a horse with wings. Nobody doesn’t like those! The bad news is that you are a, well, rather unpleasant horse with wings. How unpleasant? Glad you asked. Get this: Your idea of a good time is bouncing from cloud to cloud and on to the backs of other, cuter flying ponies, who will thus be sent plummeting to a gruesome, bone-chewing demise, thanks to an unfortunately placed series of meat grinders on the ground below. (Really kind of a tragedy of civil engineering.) All is well and good for you, though—unless you happen to miss a cloud or pony, and then, guess what? Those meat grinders don’t play favorites. So keep those wings flapping, don’t miss a jump, and keep a lookout for cool powerups to keep you flying longer and higher!

Scribblenauts Remix (http://appshopper.com/games/scribblenauts-remix)
This App Is Incompatible With This iPod touch.
I don't know but the instant I see cells/hexagons in game interface I panic. Makes me think of old, complicated strategy games.
You say that as if it's a negative.Well, for a simpleton like me it would be :-\
Sorry you feel this way. However, the real issue here is that the app should (by real-world standards) be somewhere between $19.95 to $24.95. App development is VERY expensive and done by talented folks that should be compensated for good work.
But, the reality is that in today's app market, end-users (myself among them) feel entitled to purchase software for less cost than a cup of coffee. Not only is this nuts, it is unsustainable. Frankly, there is almost no chance that FFG will break even on Elder Sign in a reasonable time (or most likely, ever).
Except for a teeny tiny handful of companies, there's almost no successful businesses making apps (most are just burning through venture capital). "Angry Birds" is likely the least successful "big product" of all time, in terms of the reward it has given its creators vs. its player base and overall penetration in society. It is like Rovio won the national lottery and all they got was a Pinto. In fact, most major electronic publishers are making apps at the moment because they feel they have to be in the market, not because they are making any money there. In my view, over the mid-to-long term, app prices will need to move from $0.99 or $2.99 to something more like $9.95 to $29.95 to really make sense for an organization that wants to have employees and make quality polished product.
Respectfully, the best way to look at Elder Sign: Omens, is as a $11 application that FFG is making possible to purchase for multiple platforms in smaller chunks (and allowing people to save money if they have only one of the devices). However, I'm sure you would agree that at that price, we would have complaints about high pricing. There's no real good way to go about it. Would you prefer just having a $11 app over the option of splitting it? What do others think? I imagine the guy who just has an iPhone would disagree, as would the guy who just has an iPad.
The better option would be to make a "Universal" version for $7.99 or so (which is still only half of what really should be charged, marketplace conditions notwithstanding), and an iPhone-only version for $2.99. However, Apple does not allow this (as this runs afoul of having the same product sold twice), so we've made it a fair middle-ground, IMO.
One of my primary concerns with FFG being in this market is how upset people get over these minimal, almost inconsequential, pricing issues on mobile applications. We're honestly just trying to get you a nice little game at a price that is near suicide to us. Getting the negative publicity on top of almost-certain losses, makes it very hard to justify app development for these devices (this is not meant as a personal attack on you, Bruce, it is a generally true issue, and a very serious problem in this market.)
I hope this explains a little. I think it very important that hobby-gamers realize that applications are so ridiculously low priced right now, that app-market pricing is living on borrowed time (encouraged by hardware makers that sell devices for $600-$700 per unit). If you want more "niche" app products made in the long-run that appeal to the BGG niche player, pricing will need to rise in proportion to the segment of the install base it represents.
I don't blame you for feeling the way you do, it is nature of the market. I hope, however, this explains a little from the other side of the fence and facilitates some understanding of the issue.
So, Tiny Tower got updated. Now it has Missions! Basically so-and-so wants X amount of Product A and Y amount of Product B. Your job is to get it to them in like a week or whatever. But what if you don't have a particular floor? Thats where gifting comes in. Your friend that does have the floor can send you what you need. They also added stars to each floor making it easier to see which floors need dream jobs and such.Awesome, add me on there ;D I think my Apple Game Centre username is Zietoun.
There's an official iOS Xbox Live app up to go with the new Xbox dashboard Metro update. (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/my-xbox-live/id480914036?mt=8)Apparently only available to the US store (for now).

Edge (http://appshopper.com/games/edge) is free. Some sort of puzzle game, looks to be highly rated.Nice, I have EDGE on my PSP. The controls are very accurate with the d-pad, I'm curious how they handled the touch controls. Time to find out ;D
iMAME (http://itunes.apple.com/app/imame/id485639079?mt=8) is free and available, but I'm sure not for long. Grab it while its hot.iMAME app gets pulled from iTunes (http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/imame-app-gets-pulled-from-itunes-app-store/)
Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based strategy/role-playing game based on the award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG. Set in the midst of World War One, the game pits your team of investigators and soldiers against an ancient enemy, one older than humanity itself... Can your team of investigators keep their grip on sanity long enough to stop these diabolical plans? The fate of humanity is in your hands...Its in the New Zealand store (http://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/call-cthulhu-the-wasted-land/id481609861?mt=8) already, and should be in the US store later tonight. US price will be $4.99.
First: Yeti Town, as launched by 6waves, was a nearly perfect copy of Triple Town. We’re not just talking about the game’s basic mechanics here. We’re talking about tons of little details, from the language in the tutorial, to many of our UI elements, to the quantities and prices of every single item in the store (how exactly did 6waves “independently” decide to price 200 turns for 950 coins, or 4 wildcards for 1500 coins each? That’s quite a coincidence!) But don’t take our word for it.Damn what a shitty move to pull.
Second: what most people don’t know is that 6waves was in confidential (under NDA) negotiations with us to publish Triple Town at the exact same time that they were actively copying Triple Town. We gave 6waves private access to Triple Town when it was still in closed beta, months before the public was exposed to the game. We believed those negotiations were ongoing, and we continued to give private information to 6waves, until 6waves’ Executive Director of Business Development sent us a message via Facebook on the day Yeti Town was published in which he suddenly broke off negotiations and apologized for the nasty situation. His message can be found in its entirety in the body of our legal complaint.
Wow, the character in AWESOME Land looks a lot like my Cheesebrothers dude.Yeah! It's the 'stache! haha I honestly thought you may have been somewhat involved in AWESOME Land :P haha
"In terms of development, I think it'll be a lot more time consuming to create interfaces for Universal applications if Apple doubles the screen size.
"Supporting both 480x320 and 2048x1536 resolutions is a significant difference.
"Double the pixel density means that textures need to hold four times the number of pixels resulting in much higher file sizes. This is especially problematic if applications still need to be less than 20MB for 3G download."
The free v1.1 update brings:Sounds pretty epic.
An exciting Yig campaign
Five new Yig monsters and four Yig adventures
An unlockable investigator (after defeating Azathoth)
Performance improvements and other technical fixes
The in-app purchase offers:
"The Call of Cthulhu," a new campaign
30 brand new adventures, four new Investigators, and 12 new monsters
New inventory items, a new map, and new game mechanics
An unlockable investigator (after defeating Cthulhu)
Nightfall and Ascension are similar in scope. In the hobby boardgame market, "deck building" refers to any game the borrows its inspiration from Dominion in that you are creating your deck on the fly during game play, rather than pre-constructing your own deck prior to the beginning of the game. Nightfall comes closer to Magic: the Gathering than Ascension did in that you have card effects where you get to choose specific targets and you have to choose a target opponent when your minions attack.Sounds cool to me.
Witcher 2 interactive comic is out (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/witcher-2-interactive-comic/id514528113?mt=8). Free! And unfortunately only available in certain stores. God damn this region crap.
First thing you're going to want to sign up at AppShopper (http://appshopper.com/) and grab the AppShopper app off the iTunes store. Its pretty easy to search for apps that way, can filter by pay or free, but the best thing is if you see an app you want but the price you arent sure of? Wishlist it and you'll be notified when the price changes. You can even see a history of previous price changes so...oh hey this app seems to go on sale every 3 months so its due to drop again soon, I'll just wait for that.
Anyway.
Assassins Creed Recolection (http://appshopper.com/games/assassins-creed-recollection)
Dice Soccer (http://appshopper.com/games/dice-soccer)
Kard Combat (http://appshopper.com/games/kard-combat)
Tiny Tower (http://appshopper.com/games/tiny-tower) (I dont know if anyones playing this anymore, but it was quite the addiction for a while)
Unpleasant Horse (http://appshopper.com/games/unpleasant-horse)
I think thats about it for games that are permanently free. The rest of mine are ones I may have gotten free at one point but was a limited sale. There are a lot of Lite versions of games that are basically demos you can check out. Theres also the standbys that are mainly multiplayer like Words With Friends, Draw Something, Hero Academy, etc.
As for useful: Yelp, Amazon Mobile, RedLaser, Photosynth (if you have the 4th gen touch with the camera...oh god, get this), Paypal, Dropbox, Steam Mobile (I think you can even buy games through the app and soon have them auto-download back at your PC) etc. Just about everyone has an iOS app now so if its something you find useful just search for it.
And now for games I reccomed but might cost a buck or two: Elder Sign Omens, Ticket to Ride Pocket, Hook Worlds, Solipskier, Rebuild, Game Dev Story, Mega Mall Story, Ascension, and Crimson: Steam Pirates.
Woah woah woah. Angry Birds costs money on iOS?Yep, on PC as well unless you grab the Chrome version. It's only free on Android.
The World Ends With You (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/world-ends-you-solo-remix/id544695089?mt=8)That's actually $2 cheaper than my iOS store! Damn it!
Square not giving a fuck about your iOS prices.
You are dealt three types of cards: Nouns, Verbs, and Wild Cards (where you can type anything, as the name implies). So you can choose to end the game early or keep playing to pile on XP. There is a Win/Lose record that I'm not sure how it works because this seems much more like a cooperative story making kind of game, but for a buck it sounds kind of neat.
You create an entire sentence using these cards. After the first turn of the game, you'll be asked to pick a card from the previous players turn to use in your sentence.
The system is flexible enough so that you can change "Dragon" to "The Dragon" or "A Dragon" without using a wild card, as well. You can also use "Dragons" or "Dragon's".
Also, you get bonus points for arranging sentences in noun/verb/noun arrangements, to encourage long, more complex sentences.
Cards cost 150 gold each and my estimation is that the average player will earn ~60-80 gold for a short-medium length game. You can end the game after earning 30 XP, but you gain a multiplier that increases for every 10 additional XP... so if you end the game after earning 120 XP, then you'll get a 2x bonus and walk away with 240 gold.
There are currently 150 cards in the deck: 50 characters, 50 places, 50 things, and nearly 100 verbs that are common to all decks.
If you're not happy with a card in your hand, then you can drag it to the bottom of the screen where an exchange tray will pop up. Exchanging a card costs 25 gold.
Behind the big guns of Brick, Lilith, Mordecai, and Roland, fans will be treated to a fresh take on the series’ signature shoot-and-loot formula. Playing from a top-down perspective, they’ll encounter various classes of familiar foes — Skags, Bandits, Crimson Lance, Spider Ants — and pimp skill trees loosely based on the original Borderlands. Characters possess three action skills and six abilities, with each of the latter supporting five levels. In a neat twist, players control all four characters simultaneously and can temporarily coordinate their corpse-piling talents to unleash powerful attacks.

So, I downloaded Rayman Jungle Run for Android ($2.99), and really enjoy it. It's simple, looks great, and is different from all the other runners in that it's actually a series of stages that you're driven to perfect (by collecting all the Lums). There's an iOS version (with more levels) as well and if there's a demo try that.
At the very least I'd watch for a sale...as simplistic as it is, it is a hell of a lot of fun.
Kairosoft also has a new game out, but so far its only in the Japanese iTunes store (its also on Android). But if you make a fake Japanese account you can go download the game for free, and it has an English option. It's kind of an interesting mashup of city builder and pokemon, if you can believe that. This one they are doing an experiment with. Instead of just straight up buying the game, you download it and play free with ads. Of course you can pay to remove the ads. This will be tricky if you're playing the Japanese version so I'll grab the US one when they finally decide to release it. But for now, its pretty neat.
PLAYDEK AND STONE BLADE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE FUTURE PLANS FOR ASCENSION iOS COMMUNITYSo it's a weird situation. It's cool that the original creators of the card game are going to make a new cross platform version that they can dedicate more time to. Playdeks version is great but behind on expansion releases and Playdek is busy with lots of various apps now. But it also sucks that the app will eventually disappear and its currently unknown if they will be able to transfer our expansion purchases into the new game. But on the third hand...what have I spent, like $10? If that? I've had a lot of fun with the game and its going to be at least another year+ before I have to make the switch. Rebuying them wouldn't be the worst thing. I guess it'll come down to how good the new app is. They have a lot to live up to.
Carlsbad, CA, March 21, 2013 -- Playdek, a publisher of digital table top games, and Stone Blade Entertainment, the gaming company behind Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer and upcoming Digital Collecting Game (DCG), SolForge, announced today their joint commitment to supporting the existing iOS Ascension community.
Playdek will support the iOS community through June 2014, with new content including iOS exclusives, and online gameplay. Although cross-platform play will not be coming to the current Ascension iOS app, Playdek will continue to launch new content for the iOS game, including the Ascension: Immortal Heroes expansion in June of this year.
"Playdek has been a great partner and we look forward to continuing to work with them to support the iOS community and to the many more awesome hobby games they are bringing to mobile," said Justin Gary, CEO of Stone Blade Entertainment.
When Stone Blade Entertainment launches Ascension Online on iOS (currently scheduled for July of 2014), Playdek’s Ascension iOS app will be removed from the app store, but Playdek will continue to support online play through the remainder of 2014.
With SolForge in development, Stone Blade Entertainment is ready to bring its own products to the digital space, and will be launching Ascension Online on PC and Android. Stone Blade Entertainment is committed to supporting their new community and to take on the existing Ascension iOS community. The company will research ways to transition users, so that those who purchased content on iOS will not have to repurchase that content in Ascension Online. All content purchased for Android and PC versions of Ascension Online will automatically transfer to Ascension Online when it comes to iOS.
Playdek applauds Stone Blade Entertainment’s commitment and will look to support them in making their eventual iOS customers whole.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Stone Blade on a great IP like Ascension, and we look forward to serving the incredible iOS community for this game,” said Joel Goodman, CEO of Playdek. “We support Stone Blade in its future efforts and wish them the best as they take Ascension to new consumers.”
Stone Blade Entertainment and Playdek are grateful to the fans that have supported them. Both companies share the same mission of bringing quality hobby games to the mobile space and feel that their commitment has shown in their respective work to date. Both companies deeply appreciate their customer’s understanding as they work through the logistics of this transition. Playdek and Stone Blade Entertainment look forward to continuing to launch the top quality games players have come to expect.
