Bet you didn't see that one coming. (http://www.streetinsider.com/Press+Releases/Disney+to+Acquire+Lucasfilm+Ltd./7828436.html)
-
As if any of us needed to like Lucasfilm any less. But they found a way! Officially done forever.
-
Ugh.
{shakes my head}
EDIT:
This thread's (rhetorical) title has became more relevant than ever... (http://www.overwritten.net/forum/index.php?topic=8670.0)
Is it fair to say Star Wars is completely dead yet?
-
More movies? Maybe they could be good. Doubtful, but maybe. The franchise is family friendly and Disney-compatible. My fear is that Disney's live action movies are a little bland.
-
I mentioned this in IRC, but perhaps Disney will be more open to releasing the original trilogy unedited on bluray.

Tell me how removing creative control from Lucas' incapable hands is anything but a good thing.
-
Because you're giving it to Disney. Honestly, it's probably just a lateral shift. I just really fucking hate Disney.
-
Perhaps. This is literally all I want, though:

and if they do that, then they're better than Lucas by default.
-
As bad as Disney can be, they have their ups and occasionally seek to make things that can be at least interesting in concept (Tron, Black Hole). Don't forget they also had a hand in making the recent Marvel movies which have ranged from alright to excellent. We also got Pirates from them and while that eventually took a tumble the first was great. I can't imagine the Star Wars situation getting worse now but it at least has the potential to get better.
And like Kman said, there's now hope that the originals can be released in a proper form. Disney generally seems concerned about preserving their past so maybe they'll treat Star Wars in the same way.
-
Less Lucas. Sounds good to me.

Disney owns a whole bunch of franchises, including comic book ones, and they are fine. With the right creative team, this could be awesome.
-
Warren Spector works for Disney now too, maybe he'll find a way to leave his mark on Star Wars :P One can only hope!

Well, Lucas can't be all bad. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/disney-deal-george-lucas-will-384947)

That's pretty awesome.

man i would give all the money i have in the world to see this in Joss Whedon's hands. I mean, he already works for them so why not?
so yeah. Joss if you are reading this and you agree to make the next 3 Star Wars movies, I will give you $680
-
Wouldn't you have to take a loan to give him that?
Anyway, Whedon would be perfect considering Firefly, but he will be busy with Avengers 2 in 2015.
-
I'll take that money and make it happen, keebs. Just wire me a check.
-
good news guys.. i wired the money to a Nigerian prince to give him the financial means to recover his dead fathers lost stash of gold bullion. he has promised me half! i can totally sway Whedons mind with all this gold!

The Avengers was great, but I want a second new Star Trek!
-
JJ Abrams did a good job directing the first. He is now working on the second. He is a huge Star Wars fan apparently, but now he is in charge of Star Trek.
Just wondering why it has taken so long for the sequel though.
-
Oh yeah duh! For some reason I temporarily combined Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams in my mind.

hahaha I wasn't sure if you confused them or were talking about something else now. :)
Yes, it is so easy to confuse them, isn't it?

Silver lining? (http://www.totalfilm.com/news/j-j-abrams-to-direct-star-wars-episode-vii)

As long as he doesn't blow up Tatooine before Luke is born . . .
