DSi XL
« on: Saturday, June 12, 2010, 03:39:15 PM »
Well, Game Crazy has probably seen more of my money in the past two weeks than it has in the past year.  There's just something about sales that make my brain OK with having diarrhea of the wallet.  Anyhow, our local store is actually shutting down tomorrow with remaining stock going to other stores.  They had six or so XL's left so I decided to bite on the 30% discount.  Ended up about 145 after tax.  I really struggled with whether or not I wanted to bite, considering I've got a DS Lite and have been pretty happy with it.  Beth's been really wanting to play the Layton games though, and I didn't want to fight with her over the DS.  Plus the large size really intrigued me.  On the other hand a new DS system is looming, and the XL price actually dropped recently in Japan.  In the end though I decided to bite.

HOLY CRAP guys, it's like night and day.  There's a lot more real estate on these screens than you initially think.  You can see detail in new games you didn't notice before.  In my experience, every game I've played upscales rather well and the graphics suffer little if any.  The unit itself is very substantial in feel.

I know the regular DSi had a larger screen than the Lite, and I don't know if I'd really see the point in upgrading a DSi to an XL, but for someone who just had a Lite I'm finding it was a rather worthy purchase.

I'd really been thinking about it for a few reasons, mostly because I was heavily studying Japanese and using a lot of screen-intensive application (not just games).  But... eh.  Maybe later, if I get back into the swing of things.

I was interested before since I only have an original model DS, but with the next Nintendo handheld going to be announced in just a couple days I've held off.

Yeah I mean I kept having the feeling that it really was a superfluous purchase, but in the end the benefits were more than I imagined.

I haven't bought anything from the store yet, but the metronome and instrument tuner programs are intriguing.  I have to wonder how accurate they are.

I am interested in the DSi XL but I don't play my DS Lite much anymore. Even when I'm traveling I end up reading or messing with my iPod, the last good time I've spent with my DS is Chrono Trigger. I really wished FFVI was ported to it, but I don't think we'll see it since it has already done to the GBA unfortunately.

Well if you remember IV was ported to GBA as well.  Although with the new system looming I doubt we'll see a similar remake for VI on the DS.

I'm not a fan of the VI remake for GBA.  Mainly because the music was off, and it was one of the more important aspects of that game for me.  In my opinion the DS remake of Chrono Trigger is how a remake should be done.  Things like the IV revamp have their place though.  Even though I've played that game 8 billion times on at least 4 different platforms, the remake on DS was a decent fresh take on it.
