Weezer, offkey?
« on: Saturday, May 10, 2008, 10:40:40 AM »
My mom was going through some random music she downloaded and asking me what I thought she would like, and she came across Weezer. I thought she might like some of it, so I told her to listen to Say It Ain't So. She doesn't even get to the chorus, and turns it off. She says "he's off key, I can't listen to that."

Now, I'm tone deaf, so I wouldn't know. Does anyone else think the singing is bad in that song?

She probably doesn't really mean off key but just doesn't know how to express what she means.  My guess is she's referring to the loose kind of casual singing style the guy's got.  It's imprecise in a certain sense and for someone of a previous generation, I can see where she's coming from.

It's not the singing.  It's the antiquated listener.  I've heard that argument before.

Edit:  Found the song.  So that's what you call "imprecise".  I call it "off-key" or "dissonant".

It's actually not that bad overall.  He can sing.  He's not missing notes.  He chooses to do it this way.  The talent shows.

Yea I never really thought about it, I just really liked the song. I never thought he was singing in a different way or anything, but I guess I just didn't notice. Either I'm just not used to payign that much attention, or I really am tone deaf.

As far as the age of the listener, I suppose it goes both ways. She was playing me a bunch of classic rock and asking me if I liked it, and most of it I said no. Sure I don't mind someone playing some Ozzy or something while I'm around, but I'd never listen to it on my own. I checked iTunes and realized the oldest music I have is 1983, and that's Metallica.

There's a lot of great music from the 70s, as well as a lot of airy ballads with little substance.  Then there's bubblegum--ugh!  Disco I liked because of the social aspects.  What rap is to partying today, disco was in my day.  You associate it with good times, and that gives it a subjective leg up.  Bee Gees were king.  :)

How about Eric Clapton?  Virtuoso rock guitarist and decent, emotive singer.  Ever listen to any of his stuff?

I never really got into much of Eric Clapton's stuff, though I did used to steal my parents' MTV Unplugged Eric Clapton CD. That one I kinda liked.

I like Weezer. I like how most of the time. The hit song thats on the radio and such is the worst song on the album.

I find it so odd you don't have music before 1983. I have probably close to 100 albums from before 1980. Except for one album my oldest one is from 1967. That's probably blasphemous to the group of people who consider anything in the 60s on not to be music.

As for Say it Ain't so, I can see how someone would have trouble listening to it. The combination of the high part and the low part about 25 seconds in doesn't sound very natural at all.

I own lots of music from the 40s and 50s, a bit from the 60s.  I hate pretty much anything but a few thrash metal bands that came out of the 80s.  80s music is almost uniformly garbage in my opinion, at least what we traditionally think of when we think of 80s pop and rock stuff.

Men at Work.  Yes!  Good song.  I'm going through some of the related stuff now.  Tears for Fears, Cars, whatever else I find.  Keeb, I'll be your second.

Well, when I arrange iTunes by year, I see that the only bands before 1990 are Metallica, Testament, The Crucified, Guns N Roses, and Pantera (old stuff that came with a Pantera discography, that I've never listened to). So really I don't have much from even the 80s, just a few select bands.

I've got some Das EFX that has no date on it, that could be from the late 80s, but I'm not sure.
