Hunting
« on: Saturday, November 08, 2008, 12:14:01 AM »
Has anyone here ever been hunting?

I was just watching a hunting show (shut up, I'm high. And drunk) and the guy was whispering about how great the deer were as they passed by him.

"That's a great one". He shot him. So it goes.

How hard is it, really? I've shot guns before, and I'm a good shot. I have no doubt that I could do it. And I understand population control. I agree with it biologically. But really- how hard is it? I don't get it.

These guys really get off on killing something.

That's what I don't get, the getting off on it.  Everything else is at least debatable.  But enjoying taking away life is a foreign concept to me.

It actually got worse. Apparently they planted trees and placed fruit boxes to encourage deer to graze there.

But I guess that's at least slightly better than Cheney. He keeps them in cages until he is ready. And he still misses and shoots an old man in the face. And the old man apologizes to Cheney. Now that's evil.

I imagine it'd be pretty hard.  I'd be bored as fuck.

Where were they filming? I know at least in IL and MN that baiting is illegal.

As for how hard it is, probably harder than you think. I personally don't hunt, but I do come from a big family of hunters. They are up at the crack of dawn in November every day for hunting season, bundling in layers of clothes so they don't freeze to death, and thye go out to find deer. Don't know if you've ever done it but trying to find deer can be a real chore.

Now, this is for gun season. Waiting in trees or being the guy that has to go flush the deer into the open (not as dangerous as it sounds. Deer will run well before you get near them so you're usually not anywhere close to where the shooting happens). So its freezing cold and you're sitting near motionless to hope a deer comes within range. When one does you have to be as quiet as possible when lining up your shot (take off your gloves and lift/aim a rifle while bundled up and see how quiet you are).

If you're lucky you'll hit the deer where you wanted and hopefully drop it instantly. If you're half-lucky, you miss. And if you're unlucky you only wound the thing and have to track it down. You don't leave wounded deer and most hunters will track it as far as they can, until tracking it further means trespassing.

Now, bow hunting is a whole other bag of marbles. Its a lot like gun hunting except your range is shorter, your projectile is slower, and after freezing your ass off you have to draw a bow back in silence. My uncle has had deer hear the arrow and jump over it like some freaky Matrix move.

As for what they enjoy...tough call. its the "thrill of the hunt", you bag yourself a nice deer, and now have a whole bunch of meat and possibly leather if you do decide to use the hide. I think I'd be pretty excited. Its not the killing itself, its the whole experience.

I do understand the appeal.  I mean, like a stealth game or anything of that nature, there's a thrill in pitting yourself against something else and seeing whether or not your abilities will net you the prize.  I get that part of it, and I also get the enjoyment people get out of guns and marksmanship.  I'm not a hippy in that regard.  I am, however, a hippy as far as the respect for life goes.  If I were living out in the wilderness and needed to kill an animal to survive, and it would provide me with meat and leather and (if I were knowledgeable enough) other assorted resources, I wouldn't have any qualms about hunting.  Hunting for sport?  Without necessity?  I don't get it at all.

But if someone who hunts actually uses a considerable amount of the animal that's hunted, it doesn't bother me quite so much.  What bothers me more is the slaughter of an animal and the subsequent waste of its resources (as long as the animal population isn't in danger, in which case it bothers me outright).  I don't respect the fact that many foreign cultures are kind of aware of how endangered some species are yet still kill them regularly for food or some make-believe medicinal purpose (Mexicans around here routinely raid areas which are clearly defined as being off limits and where the removal of animals for food is illegal, but they really don't give a shit since there's nobody patrolling to keep them out), but I do have great respect when one of these cultures uses every single bit of an animal that's been killed, going so far as to grind up the bones to make food, etc.  If I had to kill something, I would thank God for the sacrifice that had been made, and I'd do everything in my power to use as much of the animal as I could.

Oh yeah, I think you'll find most of your regular outdoorsy hunter types to be like you describe. At least, all of the ones I know are like that. Use everything you can from every kill. Its not "necessary" as in if they didnt hunt they wouldn't eat, but its not like the stuff is wasted, and the herds need thinning anyway.

It might be something to experience to truly "get". I haven't gone on the actual hunt, but I've been up north during hunting season with everyone else, I've seen the videos, heard the stories, and had me some deer meat. Good times. If you ever get invited, its cool.

The ones I don't get are the jackoffs that go on safari to shoot a rhino or some shit. You aren't going to eat it, you just want a trophy. Fuck you.

Yeah, that just sucks.  Oh congratulations, you used a machine to fight an animal that can't fight back (at least not when you're talking horns versus being able to snipe the thing at a few hundred feet).  Or like those sick fucks that were shooting the turkeys on some video somebody posted.  That shit just makes me kind of sick.

I used to hunt birds with my dad as a kid... until I got to the age of 12 and stopped liking it. Whatever we shot, we ate though -- not because we needed the meat, but as a means of justification I guess.

well you have hunting in which I define as killing for food.  Then there's trophy hunting, i define that as killing animals legally to have something to show people.  Then there's poaching the killing of animals illegally to show off to people or to sell on black market.

Same here.. We used to hunt birds in Lebanon, where we lived out in the village. We hunted exclusively for food.

The only things we used to kill for fun were lizards and stuff. Then My uncles and my elder cousins taught us (my brother and me) that hunting for sport is wasteful and disrespectful to nature and God.

One things is for sure, shooting birds is a lot harder than deer or any other land animal.

The key was to wait for a straight flight trajectory. But yes, it wasn't easy.

I have to admit, I can't imagine doing that anymore. I'd feel a bit disgusted with myself.

That or wait till they land.

You shouldn't man. If it was for food then it's fine. Sustenance.

I feel like we're vamps and you are disgusted with yourself for feeding on puny mortals now that we have artificial blood pouches.

the only thing i've ever hunted is rabbit. we had to wait for hours for one to show up and it was quite exhilarating when i finally got a kill. we ate the meat and threw the head to the dog as a chew toy. i thought i might feel a little weird about it before hand, but i really didn't in the slightest.

I've never hunted but know a fair amount of people that hunt with all sorts of weapons: shotguns, rifles, muzzle-loaders, and compound bows.

Used to hunt occasionally when I was a kid.  Was actually watching a hunting show this morning and noting how foreign the concept had become to me.  I dunno, it just seemed so senseless.  Not necessarily against it, but I'm not sure I understand doing it just for sport any more.

Deer need to be thinned out here though, that I understand.  I usually see one prancing across the road in front of me once a week or so.

hours. we stayed overnight in a little hide, playing poker and smoking. we weren't that quiet so it took a while for one to get close enough to kill with our air rifles.

Kill the wabbit!

Beautiful. Brings back memories (of later stuff- this was before my time).

It makes me weep for kids these days. There is nothing close to this out there.

Wow, 1957?!  I remember watching that one specifically on television when I was young enough to still live in shitty Toronto.  From memory I must have seen it multiple times.  Amazing that these things had such longevity. Ghandi's right, if these aren't on kids are missing out.

I would never go hunting, I don't look down on people that do it, but its just not something I'd want to do.
