Ilomilo
« on: Sunday, November 28, 2010, 12:00:32 AM »
Ilomilo is a cute puzzle game for XBLA. It also was delayed a bit to release a Windows Phone 7 version first, but now the XBLA version is coming out soon (I'd guess this coming week).

You walk around on these block pathways, and can switch between two characters (Lost Vikings or Trine style, but without the ability differences). Some blocks can be picked up and placed down, or just behave uniquely. The visual style of the game is similar to Little Big Planet.

Also, they're giving away "free codes" for the demo. Basically it's early access to the demo, and you have the option of buying the full game for $10. It's just like any other XBLA game, but it's just not officially listed on the marketplace yet. Go here to get a code. (no signup/email required)

I saw that yesterday and got a code.  Can't use it yet, since I'm not at home.  I hadn't seen screenshots, though.  That looks cute.

Looks adorable, and I love a good puzzler.  I might have to check it out now that I've got my 360 HDD installed.

This is good stuff.  The object is to join your companion, whom you can switch to by pressing 'X'.  You need to think in 3 dimensions, since you can end up walking on all faces of the cubes, depending on ramps to get there.  All puzzle solving, nothing too taxing on the dozen or so trial (intro) levels.  It's all very cutesy, with a Nintendo-like vibe that includes gibberish accompanied by text balloons.

Edit:  A review.  These are slow to trickle in, I'm sure in part because the game is not "officially" released.  (Really, it is, officially, just poorly "hidden" for hype/marketing.)  It seems to be a winner from what I've experienced and read so far.  Metacritic has nothing on it yet (probably because it's a "future" game).

So can you get it yet or not?  I'm confused.

Yeah.  You go here to get a code.  Then you redeem the code here.  That puts the trial game in your download queue.  You can then treat it like any other trial--play it, and if you like it, buy it ($10).

Basically, it's in the Xbox Live system, but not showing on the dashboard yet. The code keeps you from having to wait for the dashboard to update.

I played through the trial right after posting this thread. It's cute, and fun in a relaxed way. I'll probably get it at some point.

Ah, good deal.  May indulge as my last game before blissful unemployment then. :D

There's more to it than that.  This game is supposed to be exclusive to AT&T customers with Windows phones.  The codes are official and legit, but I think the game is invisible on XBLA because of such business dealings.  I'm not sure about anything, except that it's a unique and weird way to release.
