Shampoo
« on: Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 07:11:12 PM »
I used to shampoo my hair everyday. I had heard that this was bad for your hair and pretty unnecessary but if I skipped a day or two my hair would get greasy. A couple of months ago I finally persevered through that initial oily stage and then kept increasing the amount of days without shampooing until I got to a week. So shampooing once a week was fine and my hair looked perfectly clean and was much more manageable and soft.

Recently I decided to stop shampooing until my hair got greasy or gross just to see how long it would take. It's now been 15 days and as long as I shower regularly my hair is perfectly fine. So is shampooing a sham? What's the deal here?

That's weird. I've always noticed that if I go even a day without it my hair feels just disgusting. I've never gone more than a single day. Now you have me curious.

My hair gets greasy and nasty if I don't wash it regularly. I actually don't use shampoo, though, I just use bar soap for everything.

Apparently this is an unfortunately named movement. That link and a few of the others I read all corroborate what's been happening with me.

You can do that? I always assumed soap would dry out your hair.

It doesn't seem to for me, my hair is nice and soft. But my hair is pretty easy to deal with since I have almost none. I started using bar soap because I was tired of paying for shampoo.

Soap reacts differently in hard water.  A lot of people with super short hair (IE buzzed on a 1 or 2 guard) just use soap. It works fine for most people in this case (note that buzzed heads are generally less prone to being dry anyways).  With longer hair, I've heard it dries the scalp/hair, but have no idea if it's actually true (or if it would necessarily affect everyone).

With hard water, however, soap will turn your head into a shitstorm of scum.

Anyways, I do hear what you're saying Ren.  When I was younger, I used to go on 2-3 week hiking/kayaking expeditions and often wouldn't bring shampoo.  Your hair was getting wet every day and you bathed, which was enough when there's only like 13 other dudes around you for weeks on end.  I don't remember my hair being bad past the initial phase where you could tell it was greasy.

But cutting shampoo out in the city?  I personally wouldn't do it.  Hair is like a smell sponge (or at least that's what everyone says).  Shampoo negates that a bit....I think.

My hair dries out too much if I shampoo every day, so I do it every other day.

I'm in this boat.  My hair has always been really oily and it shows up a lot because of my lighter hair color so it bothers the hell out of me when I go a day without shampooing.  Even when I camp out I tend to try and shampoo if at all possible.

I'm no scientist but I'm pretty sure that going one to two weeks without cleaning your hair is just as damaging if not more damaging than shampooing it every day. That just makes no sense to me.

Shampoo is good but too much of anything is bad.

It's not that bad to go for a while without shampoo, as long as you wash your hair with water at least.

My advice is "don't wash your hair with soap"

I'm not giving up shampooing. I'm just seeing how long it takes for it to start to smell or get greasy. I don't plan on walking around like a mess, although it is exam break right now so standards are lower.

Well, shit, guess I'm on board this experiment. I'll be making a trip home, so I'll go a few days once I get there (no girls to get grossed out of it doesn't go well) and report the results.

Nice.

Tips I've picked up:

-It took about three 3-4 day cycles for my hair to adjust. In that time, when it starts to get greasy just have a shower and use only water.
-When you're showering, wash your hair more thoroughly with water than you usually do

Semi-related: I used to know this German chick and the way she said the word shampoo is the cutest thing I've ever encountered. I'm not one to fall for accents but this one specific word could bring me to my knees.

Haha, I've been there. The way most Japanese girls say "potato" still makes me want to hug the piss out of them.

Over the past few years I've gone from shampooing once a week to not using shampoo at all.  I will use it if I get super dirty but that rarely happens so for all intents and purposes, I don't use the stuff.  I just use water and wash thoroughly.  When I first started, I remember having the grease for a few days but that went away and now my hair looks and feels better than it ever did before.  It doesn't smell either.  Man this is beginning to sound like it was written by a shill but I shill you not.

Keep in mind, I'm not one of those all natural hippy freaks that think soap is a bad thing but I'm beginning to think shampooing every day or every other day is something we may have been conditioned to accept by some company peddling a product.  I can only speak for myself and I've had nothing but positive results from cutting out the poo.

On a related topic, even though it's considered feminine for some strange reason, I shave (trim) my armpits and I've noticed that I need almost no deodorant to keep from being smelly.

I will second this. I only wear deodorant on days I don't shower and it's never been a problem. At least in the winter. Summer days and days involving sports change that.
