Figured this might spark some conversation. I'll get this out of the way right up front: ugh, stop using the "question" inflection so much. And stop saying "right?"
His point about emotional genres as opposed to mechanical genres is...ok, I guess. I can see what hes saying but games really
are their mechanics. I can see it being used in addition to the mechanical genre, like its a comedy FPS, or a horror strategy game. But you can't just say "Its a comedy game" because that doesn't capture the whole thing. I might like a comedy FPS, but I'd hate a comedy RTS.
Plus don't we already sort of have that? NOLF or maybe even Bulletstorm could be classified as comedies. Amnesia would be suspense or horror. We already cover a lot of those emotional genres in games, we just don't label them as such.
I do agree with his handholding comments. I don't think its a Japanese/Western thing, all games seem to tell you everything as opposed to letting you discover certain things on your own.
