Do you replay games anymore?
« on: Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 09:47:23 AM »
We typically don't have the luxury anymore to replay games since most of us lack the time due to jobs, family life, too many other games, etc, but would there be a game you would really like to go through again?

I used to play through the first MGS game once a year since its release for like 5 or 6 years and I have replayed many adventure games like Full Throttle and the first two Broken Sword games. But the most recent one I can think of is the first two Gears of War games... oh and actually Half Life 2. For GoW, they are really nice short, tight, single player experiences and the cover and shoot mechanics are still the best that's been done while still being the first. While I was really miffed about the ending of HL2, I still found its world and passive environment story telling narrative to be amazing enough to come back to.

What are your picks?

I'll play through Lucas Arts adventures fairly regularly. And I still play Quake and Doom, but not really to "play through" them but just because they are fun to jump in and shoot things. But for most of my collection...yeah, I probably won't replay the majority of them.

Yeah, I always jump back into some games. I always have the current Elder Scrolls game installed (in this case Skyrim). Time is always a factor but if a game's worth it I'll jump back in :)

Only the old games.  I'll go back and play things like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Contra, but it has been a long time since I replayed anything more modern that that.  I probably played through Starcraft and Deus Ex twice each.

I do actually. I probably play Freespace 2 and the Homeworlds every couple of years, but I've gone back to a lot of things like the Metal Gears or the Metroid. I also do speed runs through Super Metroid probably twice a year, but when that only takes a couple of hours I'm not sure if that really counts. Otherwise, this happens most often when a sequel to an old franchise comes out. For example, after Halo Reach came out last year (two years ago?) I went through the entire series afterward finishing that up. That was actually really fun. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say about 1/4 to 1/6 games I play through is going back to an old one.

Man, I'd love to replay Homeworld 1/2 and Freespace 2. Last time I tried I couldn't get either Homeworld games to run well. :(

In general, no, haven't had much time to replay games.

Freespace 2... I did play that several times.  I think 3 or 4.  I also played and beat Goldeneye four times, once on each difficulty.  But that last one is almost like playing a different game 4 times since the objectives are very different in the various difficulty levels.  I also beat the first two COD:MW games twice each.

I've got a small list of games I've played repeatedly over the years.  Most of them are SNES games, which is the generation I believe a lot of people my age feel was the pinnacle of fun, creativity, and accessibility.

Super Mario World
Chrono Trigger
FF VI
Super Metroid - I average about a play through a year on this
Castlevania:  Symphony of the Night
Quake II
Super Punch Out!!

I'll also play through the GBA Metroid and Castlevania titles, since they are the closest facsimiles to Super Metroid and SotN that exist.

A lot of people feel this way about Zelda:  A Link to the Past, but despite it being the reason I bought a SNES in the first place I really don't feel that way about it.

Oh yeah, I totally played through Chrono Trigger again over the last holiday season. That was inspired by Giant Bomb's Endurance Run.

Once in a while, I'll get a hankering to replay classic favorites like some of the Zelda games.  Whenever I fire up one of the old Doo,s or Quakes, I get sucked in for quite a while too.  I replayed Oblivion after I got my 250GB Xbox drive a year and a half ago.  That included Shivering Isles.  I'm on my 3rd fully developed Skyrim character, and I'm just now starting to get tired of it.  So I guess it depends on the game.  Shorter story games like Arkham Asylum seldom get replayed, regardless of quality.
