Retro Gaming Night?
« on: Monday, February 03, 2014, 10:38:50 PM »
Lets get a gaming night going. Who's up for some Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament (99 or 2k4)?

If anyone's interested post which of the two games you'd prefer and what days or hours are good for you.

Quake 3 is cool, I'd also be down for L4D2 or Diablo 3, I know almost all of us have those.

I think my best opportune nights are going to be Wednesdays for me.

Nice.

Yeah, I'm down to L4D2 or D3 as well. Let me know if you are going to be free this Wednesday for either of those.

I could be down for some D3, assuming my PC will play it at this point. And I'm always up for Q3, though for UT it'd be UT3 for me.

Que, test D3. I reinstalled it this week after not playing it for 6 months so I'm up for it on and off.

I like the idea.  I likely won't be available consistently until I finish muddling my way through all of this estate stuff.  But if a few months down the road this is still going I'd be up for it.

Nice! Hope you can join us soon!

Pyro, I'm probably going to play some L4D2 tonight with a friend in case you want to join (goes to anyone else who might be interested).

I dug out my Q3 disc. Have to download the last point release since I apparently backed up all sorts of Q3 mods and shit, but not the patch. Oh well. If you do run a server it would be real helpful if you were running Unlagged on it.

I also have UT99/2k4/3 so I could install those at some point. I would also like to play Doom online sometime, could even do co-op. Theres Zandronum, Zdaemon, or Odamex to do that kind of thing with easily.

I still have my old Dell tower that was my original gaming machine that I can repurpose for something like Quake 3. Until maybe 2-3 years ago it was my dedicated home server but has now been sitting in the basement collecting dust. I'm going to see if I can install a more recent version of Ubuntu or Debian on and see if I can run a game server on it. Q3 and UT discs should be somewhere in the basement as well. :()

I got Diablo 3 reinstalled and patched, and it does run just fine. I invested in a halfway decent new video card (2GB GTX 650 ... my last was a 512MB Radeon 4850, haha) because it was on sale cheap. Things seem to be running smoothly with the new RAM. I'm actually sort of a little bit hooked again ... haven't played a good dungeon crawler in a while, and the new expansion looks completely up my alley thematically. So I'm probably going to be playing D3 for a bit here. Started a new wizard chick, and still have my level 36 monk from last play (I never really went through on nightmare, so he's fresh off beating the normal game).

Just let me know when you guys want to play. I'm usually up to playing after 9-10pm EST.

Idol: I haven't found my Q3 or UT discs. Will look in the basement tomorrow.

I don't really have a schedule, per se. With school, it's hard to say. But Fridays are good for me since I don't have class, if we were actually to plan on meeting up, and Saturdays I often end up slacking off so that would be a good scheduled time too. I could probably manage a night or two during the week here or there at random. I suspect I'll be playing today, probably just with my wiz.

For D3: I've got a 36 monk, a 14 wiz, and a 9 barb. Barb I'm probably going to mostly be playing with Heather since she just got a copy of the game (and she is like ... super noob, so I wouldn't expect her to join us—and if she actually did, she wouldn't be rushing through the story stuff). If anyone wants to start from zero, I've yet to play WD or DH, wouldn't mind rolling one. I kinda want to start a Crusader when the expansion hits.

EDIT - D3 just got the big 2.0 patch. If you haven't updated, it's all live now. No idea how it's going to pan out, but I really like the idea of most of the changes on paper. Most of the feedback I've heard from the expansion beta was really positive, so even if things aren't perfect, everything sounds like a big improvement from where things were.

I'm excited for the expansion. Looking forward to checking out adventure mode.

EDIT x2 - FYI, I've made a clan for OWnet using the new clan system: Fishminer's Union <OWn> -- will send invites to anybody who wants them.

I haven't played a barb or wizard yet, so I can start a new char if people want to play from scratch. My other characters are all in the 30-40s.

Looking forward to checking out the new patch. I have been feeling tired lately in the evening so haven't been playing a lot. Hopefully I'll get a chance later during the week.

New patch is ... cool. I don't know how different as I didn't play much higher level stuff prior to this. I like a lot of the changes, and some of the new ideas are cool. My main beef is it still isn't hard enough. I really need to unlock Torment, because even at Master I'm like ... meh. At least so far. When I first got in, though, holy shit. I got murdered even on hard. I think because it's now expected that you'll have much better gear more tailored to your character, as that's the whole deal with the new loot system, so I had to play for an hour or so before I got junk that allowed me to bump the difficulty back up. Started a new game with a 34 wiz on Master, and it's cake thus far. And since they got rid of Monster Power, I can't just tune up the monsters. That's sort of how the various levels of Torment work, but you can't use those until you get to Torment, which requires a character at 60.

Anyway, it's like a whole new game in some respects. I can't tell you if ultimately it's better or worse, but at this point some fundamental changes have been great ones.

Okay, so my impressions are still positive, and I was a bit wrong about difficulty. Having gone a ways in, shit gets crazy. The champions/elites/uniques are just loaded with health now, and have way more affixes. Some of these fights get just insane. They'll spawn in greater numbers, with more minions, and minions tend to share some of their powers now. These fights are way longer and way tougher, and a lot more fun. I feel like good loot is actually dropping a bit too much now, but that may be just because a lot of it is better than stuff pre-patch. Heather and I went and played for a good hour and a half tonight, but we jumped from act IV back to act I because neither of us could do anything where we currently were pre-patch. Post-patch, even the dudes in act I could take a real beating. But after finally getting some better gear from Loot 2.0 drops, we were all caught up and stuff. Did a few loot runs and killed the skeleton king, and now I'd say we're ready to go back to act IV and get on with it.

But yeah, really digging a lot of the changes and minor adjustments. Others I'm less sure about, but for the most part I have a positive first impression. And I'm also totally hooked on this now.

Man, here I am finally back doing some gaming, and Battle.net is empty of my friends! Heather and I have been playing a good bit, and she's actually gotten quite a bit better. She's not a big gamer, at least not since the glory days of LucasArts, and this is the first game like this she's played, but she's getting the hang of it more as she goes. I think her wiz and my barb are in the high 40s. My wiz is now 60, and I'm working on paragon 8 I think? Playing on Torment I right now, but may bump it up in the near future. was talking with Heather about the old days, playing with Matt and Aimee ... I miss those times. Matt, come play! I'll be your meat shield, and you can make lots of jokes about how big and dumb I am!

But yeah, still liking the gameplay changes. Elite enemies are much tougher and more interesting, drops feel about right so far. Once the expansion and adventure mode are here, I think there will always feel like plenty to do. And good god are there a lot of achievements. I knew there were a lot, but going through them again the other day ... Jesus, you'd have to dedicate your life to playing to try and get even half of them. Kind of cool, though. The game is clearly trying to give you a sense of progression no matter what you're doing.

I updated the game the other day but just wasn't in the mood for it. I might just create a new character and play from the start.

Thread about a retro game night ends up playing game released in 2012. Sounds about right. :P

I'd join in if I had the game. Anyone up for Hearthstone?

That is funny. Well, it's at least sort of retro-style. I guess?

I haven't even tried Hearthstone. I'm a bit afraid to, really.

Oh, and in case anybody's wanting to level up a character or two, or finally get to 60, or grab a few paragon levels, there's a community event going right now until the expansion's release, 50% exp increase just for showing up. And it was already a bit faster with the patch, I think, so you could really get a couple characters up to speed fast.
