When I was around 21 I taught myself to do a standing backflip. For a few years I did them pretty regularly, this Sunday I was at a BBQ hanging out and was convinced to try one.  I hadn't attempted one in quite a while, and landed on some uneven ground.  The result was a horrible cracking noise.

The worse news is that my ankle bones are apparently in pretty terrible shape due to several prior sprains, and at least one prior untreated break that I thought was just a sprain.

I'm in a temporary cast until tuesday when I see a specialist who will decide what do do with it.

Just one more log on the fire....

I can think of at least half a dozen times I've badly sprained my R ankle....  I cant think of a single time for the Left one.  I guess after a while it just became easier to do since it has happened so much.

Heh, a while back my roommates and I all took a "which Family Guy character are you" online quiz, they all came back as Brian, I was the only one who was Peter, because of my willingness to go to just about any length for a cheap laugh.

When I was reading that I was thinking, this story could be so manly and awesome, but it won't be. It will be some pussy story where he saw Eddie Murphy with a transvestite, got scared and twisted his ankle.

But well, that was beyond my expectations.

It is a good story to tell the nurses at the hospitals.

"Yea... so I was doing a back flip..."

I've never sprained or broke any ankles, thankfully, but I broke my left radius three times, might right big toe six times, and hyperextended my right knee.  The last two bother me to this day, even though they all happen many years ago.

I'm sorry. As soon you as you mentioned that you used to do backflips I had to laugh and the story went where I expected. It seems were all going to start hitting mid-life soon and have little kinks show up in our bodies.

I leave for a few hours and bam, I'm already missin so much.

that sucks ant man. I broke my right hand last october, it was not a whole lot of fun at all. Strangely enough I have super strong ankles. Never rolled one, never sprained. They're fuckin super ankles.

I tried a backflip once and only once in my life

I landed directly on the top of my head and sprained my neck. Have been gunshy about it ever since.

This is one of those things that you will look back on and laugh (if you aren't already). You feel like an idiot at the time, but....yeah. I've sprained my ankles and fractured one, its always a pain in the ass (or in the ankle?  :-\ ). I especially hated taking showers, because you have to wrap it up and make sure water doesn't get in there. And when the cast itches, that has to be the worst feeling ever, not being able to itch it.

Ant, that really sucks, man. :(

I never broken my ankle, but I sprained it pretty badly a few months ago in skating practice; yeah, of all weeks, the week right before me taking off to Nebraska for skating Nat'ls -- which led to me sittin' out this year's artistic roller skating Nat'ls... :( My ankle's still recoverin' from this sprain, as I still am doing exercises on it and everything. Yeah, and it's still not 100% -- and I still am off skates, for the time being....

My sprained sucked, but you're going through a break and that must really freakin' suck. :( Hope thangs get better for you, man.

Hope that ankle gets well soon, bro.

Best wishes.

for some reason, i expected that more of you had broken bones and gotten stitches, being guys and all that.

sounds like i've gotten more injuries than most of you.. but that's cause I used to be really crazy and would always come home with some sort of wound or sprain.

i can do backflips into the pool but that's about it. I don't have the guts to try it on land.  I'm even scared to do cartwheels!  I hated it when we had to do that during martial arts.

I got injured numerous times when I used to play soccer a lot.  Almost tore my achilles heal they said, but I turned out okay on that one.  But had lots of sprains and bruises and a couple of fractures.  Some of those were from basketball.  The funny thing is I really don't even like sports anymore.  Soccer was the only thing I ever really enjoyed.  Kinda' miss it sometimes...

That sucks ant, will that be the last backflip you ever do?

We used to have a trampoline and my brother and I did all kinds of crazy shit on it, luckily no one got hurt which is amazing now that I think about it. The biggest injury Ive ever had is when I was like 8 and I slipped and hit my head against concrete, I remember it hurting like a bitch and needing staples in my head.

I've had a couple of fractures as a kid. I fractured my right leg while playing some sport. Oh and once we were in gym and I had to flip over a bench -- don't ask -- and landed on my arm. That was another fracture.

Also I had stitches on my upper lip, that wouldn't stop bleeding. It was while playing football -- soccer -- and I was the goalie. I was trying to stop the ball and landed face first on the concrete.

And now I remember I had a stitch on my head. My family and my cousin's family were at the park and I was doing this weird crazy thing near the slides and hit my head. Actually it wasn't a stitch. My dad had to tie this thing that went over my head and chin. I still have pics to that. Or my mum does.

I didn't even mention the times I've been stitched up.

I used to build model rockets.  I was working on one, and the plastic engine nozzle had this extraneous part.  I was cutting it off with an Xacto knife and as I was nearing the end, I just got this feeling that as soon as I got through it, it would just fly into my hand.  Sure enough, that's exactly what happened.  I immediately grabbed my hand and told my friend who was there that I had to go to the hospital.  Then I looked down for the first time.  Blood was pouring onto the floor.  I ran to the bathroom and washed it under the faucet.  It was nasty.  Luckily, I gut it right in one of the creases on the palm side of my thumb, in the last joint.  But I could see blood vessels and ligaments and shit.  Gross.

My second set of stitches came in college.  I was taking this class called basic ice skating.  I know it sounds stupid, but you had to take a phys ed class there, and it counted.  It was actually a pretty popular class, and I also wanted to improve my skating so I could play on the fraternity's ice hockey team.  Well, you had these certain moves and stops you had to learn, and then you also had like four other moves and you had to learn one of them.  I never practices any of the four.  On final exam day, I decided I was going to do the hockey stop.  So during the warm-up period, I practised my other moves and then decided to try the hockey stop.  Well, my skates didn't really slide across the ice at all - they dug right in.  I landed on my chin.  It hurt like a bitch, but I kept skating.  I had a beard-thing at the time, so no one noticed and said anything.  After a minute or so, I touched it with my hand for a second.  I looked down and my hand was covered in blood.  So I skated off the ice and asked the girl at the front desk for a paper towel.  I completely soaked about 10 in just a few minutes, so I went to the bathroom.  There was a huge laceration.  I had basically torn my chin wide open - I could see the bone.  Pretty gross.  The scar from this one is finally becoming hard to see.

The last time I had stitches was probably my worst injury ever.  I was fucking around with my boss at the ice company.  At the time I was probably 5' 9" 150 lbs.  He was about 5' 11" 240 lbs.  We got into a situation where he was holding me out in the warhouse from the office.  A steel door with a steel frame separated us.  He didn't have the door latched though; I was doing a pretty good job of keeping that from happening.  I started to get some good leverage and gripped the edge of the door.  At that moment, there was a sudden lack of resistence.  The reason for this is that my boss was basically building up momentum for a shoulder charge to the door.  The door slammed shut, and latched.  But my left middle finger was still there.  The tip of my finger occupied a space not much bigger than 1/8" between two pieces of steel.  the tip of my finger basically looked like what I imagine a boiled or microwaved hot dog would look like if you smashed it with a hammer.  I went to the hospital where they just had me soak my wound it a dish of iodine while they decided what to do.  They decided on a hand surgeon, who did a great job.  My whole finger was saved because, though broken, the bone was not pulverized to bits.  He told me I'd lose the nail forever, but I didn't, though it kind of looks funny. Definate nerve damage happened, because to this day, like eight years later, I can still barely feel anything at all with that finger.

Ouch.  I remember you posting about that finger injury when it happened scott.

Stitches:

1.  I was about 7, pretending to be a bunny rabbit and smacked my head on a sharp overhang on the kitchen counter.  I don't remember how many stitches I got, but it was my first trip to the ER.

2.  I was in college, running down the stairs from the main level to the basement in our house.  I somehow clipped my head on a corner built into the ceiling and ended up with 8 staples in my head.

Concussions:

1.  See Stitches story #1

2.  I was about 13, and jumped up to touch my hand against a door frame as I was running through a hallway, misjudged badly and hit my head directly on the door frame.  Later that evening I was trying to take a shower and passed out while stepping out of the bathtub  and hit my head on the toilet.  Funnily enough I remember hearing my head hit the toilet, but I never felt anything

3.  Sophomore year of football in high school, I lead with my head a bit much during a tackle drill during practice.  I didn't realize I was concussed until Later that evening when I threw up

4. (unconfirmed) start of softball season this year I hit a grounder to 2nd and collided with the first baseman who didn't know what the hell he was doing when he caught the ball.  He was a lot taller than me, and outweighed me by at least 50 pounds.  He dropped like a sack of meat because I knocked the wind out of him, but I drove my chin right into his shoulder.  I never went to the doctor but was definitely out of sorts the rest of the evening, and had trouble seeing when I was driving home.

Broken Bones:

1. Broken index finger - football when I was 9 or 10

2.  Broken Nose when I was about 13 playing baseball, I wasn't paying attention while warming up playing catch and took a ball directly in the face.  Having the nose set was an interesting experience.

3. Broken Middle finger - Jiu-Jitsu - I fell backwards incorrectly and caught my finger on the mat as I fell.  This was about 6 months ago

4.  Broken Ankle - last sunday. - Assuming I get casted on tuesday, this will be the first time I've ever been in a cast.

... I never realized until just now that I've had 4 concussions, I should really be wearing a helmet wherever I go.

That also reminds me of the basic ice skating class I mentioned.  There was a kid in the class who was a pretty poor skater.  His skates got out from under him and he hit the back of his head on the ice.  He was knocked out for a few minutes.

He came to, and said he felt okay.  He took a few laps around the ice to confirm it.  A short while later, the instructor had us all stand along the boards while she demonstrated some move.  The kid who fell earlier simply collapsed, I guess he passed out. On the way down, he cracked the back of his head on the corner of the boards.  He was out for a shorter time this time, but had no recollection of what happened.  This time an ambulance came to take him off the ice.

Chances are yes.  If I were really into gymnastics or something it probably wouldn't bother me, but since it was something I did for the sole purpose of showing off, I think I've done my last.

I only had stitches once. I was real young and my parents were watching the superbowl (I think this was when the Bears won, mid 80s). I was crawling under the table and caught my foot on a staple. Had a nice cut from that one...scar is still there.

This is when I learned to hate doctors. She said "This wont hurt a bit" when she was shooting some anesthetic right into the freaking wound. When it was over and I saw my brother in the waiting room, he said "Wow, we could hear you screaming from out here."

Oh, I do have 3 scars on my chest from when I was born. I was in ICU for 18 days, had a bunch of tubes and stuff stuck in me. 3 of them left pretty nasty scars on the sides of my chest. People always ask me about them when I go swimming...heh.

scott reminded me of the time I was at my grandparents farm and they told me and my cousin to go collect the eggs. I touched the top of my head to the electric fence when trying to get in. I blacked out and woke up not remembering the previous 5 minutes or so, and was like 15ft from the fence itself.

It makes me realize what was so awesome about the toys back in the day... they could hurt you hahah. You had to learn some responsibility from an early age, regarding yourself and your little friends. Don't smash your little friend in the eye with the sharp end of the toy plane!

Ok so if I were a parent, I'd be happier with the toys today.
