The Protector (New Tony Jaa flick)
« on: Sunday, September 10, 2006, 04:19:59 PM »
Movie-wise? pretty bad actually. Horribly edited with even worse setups than Ong Bak.

However, I'll be damned if it didn't have some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. Three stand out already as just freaking awesome, including one that didn't seem to have a cut for like five or ten minutes. Pretty amazing stuff, and downright brutal at times.

Tony Jaa's movies have so much potential. They've already got the action choreography down, now he needs to get a good filming crew and maybe even a writer. Then they'll be taking the modern kung fu movie to new levels.

Awesome, I was wondering if anybody had seen this yet.  I have Ong Back and that was pretty cool... but I've been wanting to see what he'd do next.

I kinda want to see it, but I'm definitely not terribly excited about it.

I've seen the previews, doesn't look all that impressive.

If I didn't know what tony Jaa was capable of, I wouldn't be interested in it at all.  They guy does stuff Jackie Chan never did in his prime.

Sounds exactly like Ong Bak... all action no story

which is perfect if that's what you want.... which I do... I DO!!!!

Like it for what it is.  Cleverly and sometimes not so cleverly staged stunts.  The story is just tacked on.  I'm not sure how heavily edited the American version is from the original...but for what it is, there's a lot to like.  Just jaw dropping stunts, even though pretty much every scene was set up to lead to an unbelievable stunt.
I've heard rumours that Jackie Chan was in talks with Tony Jaa.  It was involving rumours of a Drunken Master sequel.  That would kick ass, I think.

I always get rambly when I talk about these movies.  I'll shut up now.  Bwahaha.

As far as I'm concerned, the kung fu genre peaked with Legend of Drunken Master

I love that movie... but I'm biased because I love the Chan Man

Have ya seen New Police Story?  It's a much different Chan than we're used to seeing.  He emotes in this one.

And he's got a new movie coming out in a few weeks, I believe.  Project BB.  Back to his old school HK buddy/action/comedies.
And he and Jet Li have agreed to collaborate on a movie, they're just waiting for a decent script to come their way.

I thought Jet Li wasn't doing this stuph anymore?  Or is he just not doing hardcore flicks anymore?

And yeah, Drunken Master is one of my all-time favorites.  You can't not like it.  Only thing that blows is my DVD switches in and out of the English dub and the original track... and you can't stop it from doing so.  Really distracting.

He's still doing action, don't misunderstand.  What he isn't doing anymore are his epic period films, a la Hero, Fearless and Once Upon a Time in China.
He's actually working on a project with Jason Statham right now called "Rogue."

Well, that's cool.  I guess I could see one doing one too many epics and just not wanting to do any more of them.

When does Fearless hit US theaters?  I already saw it, but I wouldn't mind seeing in the theater.  It was pretty awesome.

Hits theaters on September 22, if I remember correctly.  Yeah, he said that he decided to stop doing these wuxia movies because he no longer had a message he needed to tell.  He felt he'd said he everything he could say with these types of movies.  So, that's pretty cool.

You saw it already?  Really?  I wasn't aware that many people actually caught wind of it....well, I'm glad you saw it.  It'll definitely be worth viewing it on the big screen.  I'm sad I never got to catch Hero on the big screen.  I'll always regret that.

Hero was truly amazing on the big screen.  I absolutely loved that film.  Saw it again and took my sister.  I may or may not have seen it a third time, too.  Can't remember.

Still don't have the DVD, though.  Never could sort out which version was the best to get for playing in the US with the material that was cut.

To be honest, the American DVD wasn't such a bad version.  If you can deal with the Quentin Tarantino presents everywhere...or if you can, find a DVD9 of Hero that isn't the uncut version.  The uncut version isn't really that much better than the original, it's only got a few meaningless scenes and an annoying watermark that shows up every few minutes that says "FACE."  Ugh.

I want to see this Tony Jaa flick.

Ong Bak was pretty bad-ass w/ its action, to say the least.
Though, it really lacked a story w/ substance.

My favorite Hong Kong movie is Kung Fu Hustle.  Not real sure why, but I love it.

As for The Protector, the lead actor looks like he could be pretty badass.

It was so hyped up that I was honestly a little let down by it, but still... you can still see why the guy got as much credit as he did for it.

And I like Kung Fu Hustle a lot too.  Julia and I both really enjoyed that one.
