Topic: Rate an idea: Get a tattoo with a symbol for 'compassion' on my wrist

On the under-side of my wrist, that is.  Yeah, like where all of those veins/arteries are.  I was thinking on my left, since I would be shaking hands with my right, and that could get annoying.  It would be really small, though.  I would put it low enough that wearing a long sleeve shirt would not expose it.



It is the upper symbol.

Meh, I am just in love with the whole Zen thing and have been for years.  And I think by having something like this on my wrist(where I would frequently look at it), I think it may help me be more mindful.

I imagine this would be like the most painful place to get a tattoo though.  Ever.

Meh. I've always hated tattoos of chinese symbols. Like Idol said, everyone gets them. Now, for probably the coolest tattoo ever, check this out:



This guy was a firefighter at the WTC, and a bunch of his buddies died at 9/11. The tattoo took 9 months. The picture is kinda small, I wish I could find a bigger one, its amazing. Has all thier names and shit down the side.

Yeah, that's always bugged me.  I mean, Zen ideology is cool, and Buddhist stuff has always fascinated me, but as a tattoo it's a bit overdone.  Of course, that doesn't matter at all to everyone, and many Asian language scripts are absolutely beautiful.  But yeah, it's hard to "rate" something like that.  I mean, my next tattoo is probably going to be this (just the center design, not the words or periphery), so my idea of a great tattoo design extends a bit beyond just a symbol or two.  I've never been fond of smaller ones.  But that's totally a personal thing, doesn't make small tattoos less relevant for others.  I guess what I'm saying is the idea isn't up my own personal alley, but that doesn't actually mean anything.  So I guess I'm saying nothing.

And yeah Ghandi, that's pretty cool.  Visually I can't say I dig it that much, but it's certainly an awesome reason to get a tattoo and would certainly be something to treasure.

I do too except very rarely on like military or something like that. If a girl has a tatoo her sex appeal drops waaay down for me.

I love tattoos.  I don't like when people get 8 billion of them, and I don't like when people really just get mostly ornamental things that don't mean much to them, but there's absolutely nothing sexier to me than a great tattoo.

This may sou nd hyporcritcal coming from me (considering I used to draw tattoos and tattoo designs for friends), but I'm not a big fan of getting tattoos.. I'd be the first one to tell you not to get one, but I'd also make sure that if you do get one it better be awesome and "correct." By correct I mean if you're getting a Chinese character be sure you know exactly what you're getting. A friend of mine wanted to get one that said "Independance" but what she got turned out to mean "Lesbian." I think she had it removed or altered to say something else.

I think your first tattoo should definitely be somewhere you can cover it up, especially if you're younger and unsure of your carreer in the future and stuff.  Other than that, I have no real suggestions to offer.  Though I would highly recommend getting someone to draw or drawing yourself a bit of your chosen design wherever it is you want to get it... just with a pen... and then leaving it on for a few weeks or months or whatever.  Just get used to the idea of it being there.  It's very easy for younger people to think they want tattoos and then realize how much they did it just because they wanted to be cool or to impress somebody or whatever, and a lot of times living with a non-permanent mark for a while will help them figure out whether or not it's *really* something they want to do.

And in favor of tattoos, here are some pictures of amazingly beautiful women.  90% of these are done by Cosfrog, who does an awful lot of this.  Also, I should clarify my earlier statement and say that I don't hate tattoos with ornamental qualities, I just don't like it when people are like "cool, a skull!" or something.  It's like any other art form -- there's good and bad.  Here's a variety of stuff.  Some more artistic, some more punky.
